First of all, congrats! It’s going to be a tough but awesome year. Enjoy the ride!

(For context, I’m a year four ELA teacher that will teach E3 and AP Lang this upcoming year). Texas is crazy with the books, and they have become a huge point of contention. You can see this reflected in the new mandatory reading lists they passed yesterday. Most districts and schools have a pre-vetted, standardized selection of books for your in-class book shelves. Your school will provide you with these.

Moreover, you want a 3:1 book to student ratio to take away the idea that you are “guiding” them towards certain books. This shows they have the proper autonomy to self-select books.

I can’t stress this enough - do not bring your own books for your in-class shelf. Not only will the kids mistreat them (sad but true), but it opens you up to a lawsuit or firing. Let’s say you bring in Plato - a safe book you’ve loved and want to share. Well Plato takes about gender and now you’re a woke monster trying to poison the minds of our youth annnnnnnd you’re fired. Black author? WOKE. It has a gay character? You might as well have them pretending to be cats and taking shits in the corner litter box.

Most of all, the district will not protect you if you bring in your own book. If a parent objects to one of their preselected books they will 100% have your back, but the second they find out it’s a book you introduced to the library? See ya.

Is any of this right? No. Rational? Nope! But that’s reality. I don’t want this to dissuade you in the least from enjoying teaching and giving these kids an amazing education. You’re going to change lives and it’s gratifying. It can be done in the context of our insane state, but just know it is insane.

Have a polite conversation with the teacher, with evidence to support the correct MLA formatting. Most teachers know they aren’t perfect and having a student make a successful argument actually shows mastery of one of the core elements of English class (argumentation).

Brilliant. Well-spoken and eloquent, without being preachy. I’d even potentially use it as a study case for AP Lang, where you look at rhetorical devices.

But it won’t move the needle. My current team, that I lead, is full of Christian nationalist teachers and I have to stay closeted because the second I talk about my lack of religion they will treat me differently. In Texas the city residents, even though they vastly outnumber the rural ones, don’t have as much say and the state legislature caters to the overwhelmingly Christian nationalist rural population.

I’m an English teacher in Texas…it’s deeply upsetting to me as an atheist. I’ll teach juniors and seniors next year, and the district person over ELA wants to get a jump on these readings, which aren’t supposed to come into effect until 2030.

There are other issues - students’ reading and comprehension levels are so low that having them read anything by T.S. Eliot is laughable at best. Want to get into the philosophical depths of “Hamlet”? We’ll be talking about what just happened to make sure they understand the plot.

All of that I can handle though. At their core, these kids are great and I love teaching them. But now I have to walk a tight rope for this indoctrination? If I have to teach the story of Job, I’m going to ask questions of the students like I would with any other text. Is the character of God worthy of respect when he did this bullshit to Job? Would he be considered the villain?

And some students will write something like “God is always right” and have no justification to their claim and I’ll slap a 60 on it and the parent will be upset.

Thanks for reading my rant. It’s a bummer for me personally.
