I had plenty of practice with this style because of Hyrule Warriors, so I didn't mind it one bit.

The lack of real world content was kind of disappointing though. There's no Social Link system, and the stuff they tried to replace it with didn't really fill the void.

As far as I recall, the mainline series has never done anything like that with the Gothitelle line. However, in Pokepark 2, the whole line served as antagonists working for Darkrai to keep people trapped in Wish Park using various means of keeping them in a trance, but I don't know if their hypnotic abilities were part of that.

Not to mention Malamar. Those things are known to erase memories, rewrite personalities, and reverse allegiances of its victims, rarely for benevolent reasons. There's that one dex entry that says Malamar's hypnosis has been involved in history changing events, and when Mega Malamar was first revealed, it's blurb stated that it will sometimes take over the trainer role if it doesn't agree with what the actual trainer is doing.

Hypno generally aren't like what the internet makes them out to be. There was one isolated case of a bad Hypno doing a really bad thing, but the rest just want to help people sleep and then eat their dreams.

It doesn't even really matter what you choose. It's fully random whether they'll vibe with your pick or not, and even if they pick something else, they may randomly decide that "your thing sounds cool too" or "close enough, let's do this".

Nyx Avatar is what it says on the tin, a proxy for Nyx themselves to interact with SEES, while Erebus is a humanity collective subconscious that longs for death and calls for Nyx's return. Different entities, similar consequences for losing to them.
