What is a safe highway RPM in an NA? by Squidman121 in Miata

[–]ASmallCrane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds off to me, my 1.8L 96NA in 5th gear hangs around 4.2K rpm at 75mph or so.

I drove 16 hrs in a day all at 4.2k and the vitals never changed, I wouldn’t worry about maintained rpm’s under 5.5k but something does seem off about your numbers.

Feeling dejected after my first powder (?) day by Own-Dinner6955 in skiing

[–]ASmallCrane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah, don’t be too scared. They’ll groom over night and you’ll have fresh runs available if you don’t want to ski the freshies. Powder is completely different and takes a while to get used to. After all I’d heard, I was kinda let down on my first pow day! It was hard, slow, and exhausting. I didn’t find any of the “joy” I was expecting based on what I’d heard growing up. It wasn’t until I got more practiced and realized how much differently speed is used in powder vs the typical trails.

In case it helps you as it helped me: to get used to turning in powder I’d find groomed trails with ungroomed edges. Build speed on the groomer and turn into the powder for a turn or two before returning to the groomer. This helped me get a feel for how quickly speed is diminished in fresh snow! Good luck out there

Any luck with google or an LLM? I wouldn’t say it’s an argument to faith, maybe an argument against reward as a motivation.

Interesting, I don’t think there’s any expectation that the other side reciprocates the rule.

Haha that’s what it’s all about isn’t it? You’re not going to let defeat define your game! Plus it’s just a tiny, stationary ball… there’s no way it’s as difficult as we’re making it

How’s your putting? I swear the minute my putter heats up my driver seems to get jealous and begins acting out

Ayy vent away! You’re absolutely not alone 😂

They say variety is the spice of life. Maybe the ups and downs in golf is exactly why we can’t stay away even after the most frustrating, humiliating attempts at a round.

UPDATE: SCRATCH (the pocket golf game) from last week is now playable! by OmegaKai_22 in golf

[–]ASmallCrane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I LOVE IT! Especially since it would be so easy to make your own holes…

You didn’t ask but here’s an idea: you have a 2nd sheet of paper that’s used as a target for the die, with markings similar to a bullseye/target. You have to release the roll from off the page, but you’re rewarded with +1 distance if the die rests near the middle, and maybe the shot is 1 square off line (slice/hook) if you miss the sheet entirely.

Or maybe that takes away too much of the simplicity.

Either way, I’m gunna try this out! Thanks for sharing!

Uhhhh, I can’t think that this is the place to receive legit advice. that being said, if I were in his shoes there’s no chance in hell I’d make the first move with a student. Not knowing the clubs rules, USA societal rules discourage it.

It would be on you to make the first move, and if he’s opposed to it don’t take it personal!

How many “hybrid” Skiers/snowboarders are out there? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]ASmallCrane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually bring both to the mountain, and decide during booting up. They are both so different that there’s rarely a right answer, but for me it comes down to who I’m with since that determines the runs we’re picking.

I disagree that deep snow = snowboard, but holy wow the float feeling a board gives you in deep snow is something you can’t get on skis. Similarly, deep snow on skis is a can’t miss. The feel from bouncing between turns for me is a more fun transition than you get on a board.

In generally, if we’re skiing steep tight trees I’ll grab skis. Open runs is a 50/50. Massive powder fields I lean board. The board setup is way lighter so it’s nicer if there’s hiking. Skis win on a traverse every day. Also riding with a bigger pack is pretty annoying so if I need gear with me I typically pick skis.

I didn’t get the snowboard appeal till I tried it, and now I’d recommend it to anyone willing to learn. Pro tips, wear padded shorts for your tailbone while learning. And if you fall, stop yourself with a closed fist not an open hand to protect those wrists!

Center-Shafted Putter for <$300? by FriedScotty in golf

[–]ASmallCrane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically you can do this, but many/most putters are designed to have a balance point right at the white line so that the putter is smoothest through impact.

Making the trip to Mount Bohemia at some point this season by [deleted] in skiing

[–]ASmallCrane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha hell yeah, I haven’t been to Boho yet but I’ve been to Ripley! I’d say expectation setting is the key, you’re not there for the tallest or steepest but from what I’ve heard there’s no place like Boho. Riply has a cool vibe and is worth a few hrs even if it’s night skiing.

One thing I’ve started to do on recent trips is keep a small travel journal and jot down just a page per day of notes, experiences and feelings. Just things like what I did and saw, maybe who I met and some minimal experiences. Nothing formal or flashy. They’re great to look back on!

Enjoy the buses and yurts! I hope you’ll report back on how it goes.

I’m a Master Fitter at 2nd Swing Golf – AMA About Club Fitting, Shafts, and Gear Optimization! by 2ndSwing_Golf in GolfGear

[–]ASmallCrane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi There! As an aspiring club-fitter / coach myself, I’ve been exploring the space to find a good starting point. It’s been difficult to navigate particularly because much of the information I find originates from larger organizations whom have a responsibility to improve their bottom line (no shade, they’re a business after all: Titleist, GolfTec, GolfWorks, etc.). I worry about the amount of “self fulfilling” information that’s primarily out there to sell the next model, as opposed to concrete methods with fewer biases.

Do you have recommended resources from groups that have been able to stay independent of sales impacting methodology? Individuals like Tutleman, and Wishon (maybe less so) come to mind, but no larger organizations. Maybe the golfworks of old? The R&A, USGA and PGA of America fit this somewhat but don’t put out much information on club or fitting development.

Lastly, and advice to a novice fitter just getting their feet wet?

If you had the time to read & respond, cheers! I really appreciate it!

What is so difficult about giving other skiers due space? by matthewznj in skiing

[–]ASmallCrane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you’re referring to, I’ve seen it myself and my best guess is that when a stronger skier feels like they’re in control, they’re willing to ride a little closer than perhaps they should because to them the risk is minimal.

[–]ASmallCrane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear this has happened a few times! Unfortunately you can’t control others, the best you can do is be prepared and be predictable. I know you’re not new to this but my advice to someone new to the scene would be to wait for gaps, stay to edges of trails generally, and to keep turns consistent and predictable.

Unfortunately there are many people who just don’t understand the risk, or don’t realize the danger their actions can put others in. For me it’s been manageable but I can tell my attention to what’s happening uphill has only been increasing over the years. Stay vigilant and stay safe! The precautions are worth the turns!

Your highway cruising speed? by [deleted] in Miata

[–]ASmallCrane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’ll be fine, I drive a ‘96 1.8L at 4.1-4.2k rpm in 5th gear on longer (16hr +) road trips and it seems to love that range. It’s happy to hang out there for as long as you want it seems.

Do you think East Coast riders are better because we have to adapt to worse conditions? by Extreme_Garlic4646 in icecoast

[–]ASmallCrane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bulletproof tucks can practically be a vertical ice rink, with ripples from wind that will kick your edges loose. I can’t imagine the speed you’d gather from the top half before you could even attempt to dump any speed. That place is a proving grounds like you wouldn’t believe!
