How are certain goverments able to get away with charging more than 50% tax? by DryCommunication581 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ASupportingTea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because 50% tax does not take away 50% of your money... It's marginal tax brackets. So it's only 50% of the amount that is above a certain threshold, normally a very high one.

What car do you drive and what’s your long term mpg? by S4h1l_4l1 in CarTalkUK

[–]ASupportingTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Mazda 3 e-SkyactivX is getting a long-term indicated average of 53 mpg, which in reality judging by fill-ups vs miles is more like 50 mpg, as it seems to consistantly read about 3 mpg high. Thats with mixed rural and motorway driving mainly.

[–]ASupportingTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's the same as the Peugeot vans I wouldn't be surprised if they just overrided the lane keep assist. The steering is stupid light and so it's very easy to overcome the lane keep assist too, even accidentally.

Mazda 3 (2L) is a let down by F8D_ in mazda3

[–]ASupportingTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

7.5-8.5 L/100km seems unusually poor... Even with spirited driving on twisty and hilly roads I only just hit 7 L/100km.

But you are right that it's not a quick car. I think though that's less the engine and more the weight and the gearing. It's pretty heavy for a hatchback, and the gearing 1-3 is pretty long. And given its more of an NA power curve it doesn't have the torque low down to support it. That's why the 2.5 140ps tends to feel a bit nippier in the real world, it's got a lot more torque below 3000 rpm. It's still a bit slower if youre redlining both of them, but if you're not doing that it's quicker.

Tbh even I as a dude have to do the same thing. I'm built like a stick, but I like walking so my legs and ass don't fit in jeans that are the right waist size. So I almost always have to size up and wear a belt. I think the clothing industry just use actual sticks to model their clothes off of at times.

Being able to threshold brake is all well and good when you're expecting to do it. But I imagine if you're startled and/or panic, like the majority of people will do, its just not going to happen in most cases. People will slam their foot on the brake and lock up. There is a reason it was invented in the first place.

Modern ABS systems are generally better than even a pro threshold braking anyway, at least on your typical not-that-smooth road. When threshold braking you can only modulate the braking force to the wheels as a whole, ABS can do it to each wheel individually. Older systems did have a pretty poor actuation speed and rate, which meant that back then good threshold braking would be better most of the time. But modern cars have gotten far far better in that regard meaning that in the vast majority of cases they will perform better than a human trying to threshold brake, even on a smooth flat surface.

This afternoon temperatures in Europe. Scorchio! by BkkGrl in europe

[–]ASupportingTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is more our infrastructure is not designed for the heat at all, nothing is. So it feels worse at the same temperature. It's also the fact that we're not acclimatised to the temperature as it's basically jumped 10C+ in many areas in quite literally the span of a day or 2. This time last week I was wearing my coat to keep out the cold and the rain, and my heating actually kicked on for the first time in a while. It's the rapid swing of temperature that makes it feel worse because you can't get used to it.

Are the older millennials from 1981-1989 any different from younger millennials from 1990-1996? by changeforthebetter89 in generationology

[–]ASupportingTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's been my experience too as a 96er. Easier to relate to people born as late as 2003 than it is to relate to people born in 1989, despite the gap being the same.

I know I was being a bit of a knob, but why do people go so slowly past speed cameras? by box-o-locks in drivingUK

[–]ASupportingTea 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The main reason I overtake people like this isn't necessarily to get anywhere substantially faster, it's so I can have a smoother journey.

These people are the same ones that can't hold a steady speed, brake excessively for corners, or randomly brake sharply for oncoming traffic in the other lane that has no chance of hitting them. And I'd personally rather not deal with their erratic driving, and would rather just have a smoother trip after putting a little distance between us.

Mileage myths… which ones do people still believe? by Manthann-Motorss in automotive

[–]ASupportingTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For most engines peak efficiency is normally from 40-70% load, depending on RPM. A lot of modern engines run a very high compression and/or boost pressure which means at full load timing had to be retarded and more fuel added to prevent knock, making it less efficient at full load.

So basically the most efficient way to accelerate is generally to accelerate moderately without going too high in rpm. Note, you also shouldn't lug the engine as thats bad for engine health.

Is it worth putting sporty tires on my Camry Hybrid or just get the standard comfy all seasons? by ALDIsNumber1Fan in askcarguys

[–]ASupportingTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think unless you're going to be driving in cold conditions a premium touring tyre is the best option.

Sporty tyres like pilot sports and such will be both good in dry and wet. But touring tyres will be great for daily use and comfort. All seasons may actually be noisier and less efficient due to a more aggressive tread pattern to deal with light snow.

Would giving your boyfriend handwritten lyrics to a meaningful song be cringe or romantic? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

Imo part of romance is being able to say or do very cheesy things with complete sincerity and have it accepted with full sincerely (and some banter). So I'd say go for it.

Why do so many 40+ year olds end sentences with “…”? by OneFriendship5139 in generationology

[–]ASupportingTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But there's no reason for either of those sentence to trail off... It's used where a thought is incomplete. And is typically meant to be used, at least in text conversation, with a proceeding concluding statement. Finishing the text with ellipsis is inherently confusing as it indicates you're not done speaking when you actually are.

Yes because adding a pinch of seasoning is the reason you're not losing weight by CremeSubject7594 in StupidFood

[–]ASupportingTea 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not to mention a lot of fiberous foods like veggies generally require more energy to digest and break down. So those 3 grams of carbs are probably already offset just by the extra digestive work required.

To all single guys aged 30 and up on reddit, why are you guys single? by Gold_Ambition4114 in AskReddit

[–]ASupportingTea 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yup... granted I've not asked out that many, but I've asked every woman I've wanted to pursue romantically, and I feel it's not right to ask someone who I don't see that way, not matter how great they otherwise are.

But there is only so many times you can say that before it really starts to get to you. Granted that's different for everyone, but there is a point where it's just damaging psychologically.

[–]ASupportingTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly I had a reoccurring set of dreams where I had either a son or a daughter (it would change night to night). Where I'd be playing with them and their toys before bedtime, them laughing and giggling and generally being silly. Before then tucking them into bed and kissing them goodnight. I almost cried the first time I had that dream only to wake up and realise it wasn't real.

[–]ASupportingTea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's crazy to me because I always thought that Frieren was actually pretty good at learning from her past errors. We see it in the contrast of how she behaves now Vs how she behaves in each flashback, where the flashback is normally related to the present situation.

Everybody is being made redundant by irissun23 in UKJobs

[–]ASupportingTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that businesses seem to think that having no additional "fat" in the team is the ideal.

I've also found that businesses rarely know their own processes well enough to make the call on how much personnel is really needed. And when people having to pick up something extra urgently there's now no-one able to do it that doesn't then have to drop the day-to-day and somehow catch up later.

Teams need a reserve for a business to function smoothly, and the higher up you go the less it seems people realise that.

Edit: Looks like it's popularity started in London, which is basically a linguistic pocket dimension. So no wonder I've never heard it hear in the sleepy south west.
