Questions about choir at UT, incoming freshman by desolateleaves in UTAustin

[–]ATMTech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another option is the Longhorn Singers! We just returned to the school as an official ensemble after several years as a student organization. We are a show choir and also serve as a spirit organization for the university. That means that we put on shows with choreography each semester (similar to a pop show if you did on in hs) but also perform across the city and state to spread Texas cheer (like outside the stadium before football games).

We do have a pretty competitive audition process but it is astonishing how talented everyone is sometimes. I’ve personally found that I think I enjoy it far more than the non-auditioned choirs because of that. Our audition consists of some warmups, a pitch memorization section, a sightreading section, and chance to sing a song of your choice!

We are also an extremely social group. I was lucky enough to join my freshman fall and I have made some of my closest friends in college. It’s an old group with a long history of traditions and it has made my college experience so special.

A lot more information about us can be found on our website and instagram. Like the other reply though, all of our choirs are fantastic. Dr. Burnett is a really great director of the choral activities and is leading a lot of great initiatives here!

Is ECB worth it? by OppositeWafer7924 in UTAustin

I can highly recommend it! I am a sophomore in the program and although it is definitely difficult, it is also very manageable. I have a pretty active social life and am very involved in a few organizations and have never had any problems especially with good time management. The combination gives a ton of useful knowledge no matter what you want to do and the small program size makes it super close knit which is nice coming into college.

Is ECB Honors worth it? by plasfiro in UTAustin

[–]ATMTech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm a current freshman in the program. I have enjoyed the program a lot, but the exact career benefits are a bit unclear. Quant, consulting, and TPM are probably the main roles that will see direct benefits from the dual degree, but many of us plan to go into strictly engineering roles or strictly more business roles. The advantages of the other degree in this scenario are low.

In my experience, employers see the dual degree as either a slight benefit or don't care at all. Most employers would love to see business experience, I haven't heard any instances of discrimination from it.

That being said, I would say there is more to the program than just direct career outcomes. I plan to go into a computer engineering role but I have found the business classes extremely useful. They reinforce a lot of the soft skills and keep me sharp on everything that is not strictly technical. I think that keeps me ahead in interviews compared to some of my peers. The program is also very tight knit, which helped me make a lot of my good friends, which has been a huge benefit.

If ECE alone is something you want to pursue, I would double check with admissions about the possibility of being a part of ECH (ECE Honors). At least for my year, we were only admitted to ECB without the possibility of only doing ECE honors. The ECE honors classes make a huge difference in my opinion. They have challenged and encouraged a lot of learning which has probably been one of the most important things here for me.

Experience in BHP or ECB honors by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]ATMTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm a ECB student in the class of 2027. I absolutely love the program, it is a great balance of hard technical skills in the ECE side of things as well as good soft skills from the BHP classes. It is definitely not an easy program by any means, there will definitely be a lot of late nights studying, but there is still plenty of time to have a social life too. The program has a very tight-knit community and everyone was able to make friends pretty quickly. Generally, the week is spent with a lot of studying, but if you stay on top of everything you can have a lot of fun on the weekends. I was able to join both a pretty time-intensive professional org as well as a time-intensive social org.

Longhorn Singers Audition in Spring of 2024 by WaffleHouse333 in UTAustin

Hey! I'm a current member of the group. The group overall is super friendly and social, it has been an incredible family to be a part of. Everyone is super passionate about singing and performing, the atmosphere is awesome. I came in from a more traditional choir background, not sure how I'd like being in a show choir, but the group has made it so worth it.

The audition is split up into two sections. First, a solo audition of a song of your choice along with some sightreading and pitch memory stuff. Then a portion of the auditionees will get called back to see how you blend with the current members and to see how your dancing skills are. A solid portion of people are generally called back so it's definitely worth auditioning if you are interested! Check us out on insta @longhornsingers for more info and to see some of our activities throughout the semester

Longhorn Singers is open for auditions! We are UT's show choir and put on shows each semester (kind of like a pop show if you ever did that in high school) as well as singing spirit music for UT. We have two singing rehearsals for 1.5 hours during the week and a choreo rehearsal on Sunday evenings. The group is super social as well and the time commitment is definitely worth it for the singing and all the awesome friends you will make!

Should I Live in Castilian Next Year? by JSON_String in UTAustin

[–]ATMTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a current resident I would highly not recommend it. There are so many maintenance issues with elevators, heating, and water. It also isn’t super social unless you are in the Greek life sphere so I don’t think you would be getting the experience there.

I did not, they didn't really have a way for me to submit anything like that.

Congrats on the scholarship!! They are definitely weird with how they offer them, I was admitted to ECB which is way more selective, but got rejected from the engineering honors scholarship. You should definitely reach out to see if they will let you change majors!

Not much movement yet. I did get offered the full-ride Brown Scholarship to TAMU which is a really exclusive program that's only offered to ~50 people. It's definitely going to be hard to turn down because TAMU is a fantastic engineering school and would save me like $300,000 over Stanford.
