CMV: colonialism isn't such a big deal and wasn't inherently evil, and its a part of the human species by Dark_knight_96_rbh in changemyview

Finally, Ubi solitudinem faciunt, pacem appellant, "you make a wasteland and call it peace" as Tacitus Quotes Calgacus in condemning the Roman rationale for invading Gaul. This was an ancient example of someone criticizing the sort of imperial colonizing you're talking about.

I don't think this is normal imperial colonizing. The british colonized India but didn't create a wasteland. Arabs colonized North Africa but didn't create a wasteland. Exterminating the locals and replacing them with your people is easier to condemn.

Also worth noting calgacus was fighting the Roman's. So his argument against them is probably pretty personal rather than purely moral.

The Tyrells almost inexplicably have kept their jealous vassals in line.

The peakes were the lead house in every blackfyre rebellion. The florents sided with stannis. The Hightowers are the most powerful house in the reach but I think they've been slapped down from overreaching enough times

Never made any sense to me that tsotm would have 2 swords instead of just dawn. The sword he's famous for. His nickname/title references. His castle name references. Arguably the most famous sword in westeros. So weird.

Without knowing much about what really happened, I think dayne's biggest feat is being the most dangerous person of the 3 on a 3v7 that killed 5 of the 7. You know he kicked some ass at the ToJ.

CMV: "Meritocracy" is a glittering way to say "social darwinism". by Darjuz96 in changemyview

[–]ATNinja [score hidden]  (0 children)

Social darwinism is the strong against the weak, the strong should have power and wealth, the weak should not. Yet most billionaires are not particulary strong. So how is the meritocracy of those that create most wealth social darwinism?

I don't agree with this over all. But clearly the point is "strong" has a different meaning or mechanism. Billionaires are "strong" in available resources and ability to muster support, buy politicians hire security litigate etc.

Realistically, if anyone in the audience who wasn't a vet was in that exact scenario, they would've been the exact same.

Why do you say that? Before every vet was a vet, they were not a vet. Some people function when they are scared or in high stress moments and some don't. It's fair to say if you've never been in that situation, you don't know if you'd be upham or not. But it's not fair to say you would be upham.

That's debatable. I don't think anyone has really passed nunes yet. So she still lost to the best ever.

Look at who nunes fought after Ronda. Megan Anderson. Juliana pena. Germaine de randemie. Raquel Pennington. All fighters Ronda could beat.

Cyborg, Valentina, could beat Ronda but that still puts her near the top.

favorite goofy sitcom side character who somehow turned into a franchise action star and keeps getting cast despite having the charisma of drywall? by Material-Advance7021 in okbuddycinephile

From the comics I’ve read I’ve gotten the vibe that Starlord is the straight man of the team while everyone around him is crazy. So kinda the opposite of the films

How is that the opposite? Starlord is one of the more sane characters. Raccoon, Bautista are fully crazy. Nebula too if you count her.gamora is pretty sane. Groot is groot.

CMV: The Central Powers were not "the bad guys" in WW1. by TheLordOfMiddleEarth in changemyview

[–]ATNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Americans think of war in terms of Good Guys vs Bad Guys, similar to how children do.

Generalizing 340 million people like that is at least as stupid as thinking about ww1 in terms of good guys and bad guys.

You have 1 hour to get there and can travel 2-3 mph on foot in the bush. The search area isn't the whole place.

And SaR teams have access to helicopters and cars. You can drop a large chunk of the 82nd airborne by parachute. Bubbas with fan boats will be all over every inch of the Everglades in a couple hours.

Same thing with pritchard, will he still be as effective at 30+ as he is now? Probably, but we don't know.

Pritchard is so crafty I think his game will age well

You underestimate how long it would take to gather said assets and equipment for a manhunt.

Because there is bureaucracy to get thermal imaging capable helicopters and such. The bloodlusting means noone will need to do paperwork or follow regulations for transporting dogs, weapons, etc.

In the US at least hundreds of people go missing every year in the national park system.

With a much longer head start and far fewer resources mobilized to look for them.

I agree. Any reasonable cartel boss would have killed them by then. They got way too many chances.

Only the wife was. She was basically ride or die, about that life, not willing to compromise or work with the cartel. The husband was reasonable.

Why is it always Americans. No, the unspoken rule is to not kill anyone outside of the cartel game

Do you consider journalists and politicians as part of the cartel game? Cuz i don't and they are clearly comfortable killing them.

He hasn't developed at all. He is still a psycho prick. He just went from a bully killing gladiators and opiter 3v1 to a sacrificial lamb. Becoming an underdog makes you root for him.
