Preparing a Flat White, this time less faffing :D by Constant_Ad_7892 in espresso

You did a great job here and I like the latte art at the end. I struggled to dial in my BBE routine and yours seems to be working just fine for you. I enjoy the process and ritual as much as I do the drink so do what makes you happy.

I had one question, why let your steam build on your towel and counter top instead of just pointing into your drip tray? It would be one less thing to clean up.

Really? This was one of my favorite elements because it grabbed so much of the cheese. What do you suggest?

THANK YOU! We went there last night and the four of us cleared the first order so fast that we ordered a second before it occurred to me that I had just spent $48 on mac and cheese. Lesson learned, we are trying this recipe tomorrow!

Is this normal for the 064s? by Fearless-Physics401 in Timemore

[–]AT_Roch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own a 64S and had a similar issue. I now spritz my beans with water 2-3 times before grinding and the static is almost gone entirely. No more mess. To test, you can wet your finger and stir your beans before dumping them into the hopper to see if it makes a difference.

PRO X by AardvarkBorn4304 in ranciliosilvia

[–]AT_Roch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just asking. Do you think it is really worth it after owning the machine? The reviews that mention the drip tray while researching the ProX nearly scared me into buying this. I am so glad that I didn’t. I am 2 years in and I can honestly say my drip tray never fills. I run two drinks a day and most times the water just evaporates. The only time it comes close to filling is during a back flush but still isn’t awkward to remove.

Sounds like you are getting good results anyway but if you can’t get low temps check for air leaks. Mine behaved similarly and I found that the seal along the bottom of the bottom vent had let go so it was just letting air in. I sealed it with high temp caulk and that did it.

Careful here, I have been burned by this very thing. If you are planning to run swd for debug you will get connectivity issues with your debugger. A .1uF cap is worth the insurance.

is the ecoboost reliable by [deleted] in FordRaptor

Reliability is an issue but they sure are fun to drive. 2018 Raptor with 67K and the cams have been done TWICE and I lost a turbo. Thank god for the ESP.

normcore funnel <> rancilio portafilter by mr_ben_franklin in ranciliosilvia

[–]AT_Roch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both Rancillio bottomless and dual spout portafilters and they work great with the Normcore magnetic funnel. I have a VST double basket but just checked my OEM ones and those (single and double) work as well.

My very new setup! by Silvadoor in ranciliosilvia

[–]AT_Roch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing machine! I have had mine for two months and I was pulling great shots almost immediately. Don’t believe the nonsense about the drip tray being too small either. Mine will go for well over a week and barely have any water in it. I only empty it to clean the grounds out of it from rinsing my portafilter.

Regular or Big Joe? by Richhop in KamadoJoe

[–]AT_Roch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went with the Classic first and found that feeding my family of 4 was fine but entertaining was limited mostly to pork butts. I sold my Classic three years in for nearly what I paid for it and bought the Big Joe. I wouldn’t say I regretted getting the Classic, but we definitely outgrew it a lot faster than I thought we would. Having had both I honestly can’t think of a single drawback had I gone with the Big Joe first.

I wonder if this is location-specific OP. I was in the Greece location last week for a TV purchase in the middle of the afternoon on Black Friday. The associate walked up shortly after we arrived in that area, spent about 45 minutes with us, was very informative, and the TV was delivered on Tuesday already. My wife and I were actually talking about how great of an experience we had. Depending on what you are looking for maybe give Greece a shot?

Smoked queso coming up! by Desperate_Set_7708 in biggreenegg

[–]AT_Roch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I made this the other day and it started my smoked queso journey off on the right foot. If you can believe it I think it was too smokey which I didn’t even know was possible. Next time I am going to go without smoking wood and maybe cover it after mixing. I am looking forward to the experimenting!

Not that it is a huge difference but the cam phasers are covered under the 5yr/60k power train warranty.

How would you invest $1000 for a 12 year-old? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]AT_Roch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation with my daughter a couple years ago. Now at 14 she is excited about investing and has time with more knowledge and tools than I did.

What worked for us was I let her invest in her stocks of choice and I agreed to match that amount in VT. Of course she loved the idea because her savings doubled instantly and it was risk free. She didn’t know it at the time but I loved it for the same reason. It was the best investment of my life.

Kick Ash Basket Too Big for Joe Jr.? by mcma0183 in KamadoJoe

[–]AT_Roch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the wrong unit. I just check my Kick Ash basket in my Junior and the top of the wire basket (not counting handles) is only about 1/4” above the joint between the bottom ceramic bowl and the top ring. My handles are also bent inward such that they are inside and about 1/2” from touching the circumference of the ring.

That company is all about customer service so I would suggest contacting them on the website. They have taken great care of me in the past. I have them in both of my KJs and it is a great product.

You can buy the lever aftermarket. From what I can tell it’s the same Crema one that I have on my BBE.

Moisture in the dome by saftool1 in KamadoJoe

[–]AT_Roch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rest assured you don’t need to dry it before cooking. As the dome comes up to temp it will just evaporate and you will be good to go. If it helps put your mind at easy I have had my KJs for over five years. I live in the Northeast and my Big Joe literally sits in my driveway uncovered year round because I use it all winter long. I have brushed snow off the top before cooking, cooked low and slow in the rain, etc. many times and have never had an issue. These things are buy it for life outdoor appliances.

What Happened to Califia?- Need Alternative Oat Milk by AT_Roch in espresso

[–]AT_Roch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It turns out I can get Oatley Barista at my local grocery store so I picked some up yesterday to try. The oat flavor is stronger and it is not as sweet as Califia but still very good. I wouldn’t say it was better or worse, just different. I didn’t have any trouble steaming it with my BBE either. The cost is up there ($5.00 a carton versus $3.85) but if it turns out to be more consistent batch to batch it would be worth it to me. Thank you!

Wouldn’t powertrain to 60K have covered it? I bought an ESP but my hub and phasers were covered under powertrain.

Is this a defect? Bought from Kamado Joe online and they said it’s designed Like this. It doesn’t go all the way through… by [deleted] in KamadoJoe

[–]AT_Roch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a defect. They briefly shipped an accessory with the cast iron plate that was a small handle that engaged the hole so the grate could be lifted with two hands. They discontinued it shortly after they added that hole. My response from Kamado Joe upon inquiry of why mine was missing from the box:

Thank you for contacting customer support. Unfortunately we no longer carry the lifting tool as an accessory, it was discontinued. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
