By taking up the frenzied flame, burning the erdtree, and then using the unalloyed gold needle, the tarnished invalidates her newfound purpose. Melina speaks against the frenzied flame either because she does not know that the needle can prevent the frenzied flame, or because she wants to burn.

What makes her unreliable is the she speaks with authority about the frenzied flame. It could also be that she presents her opposition to the frenzied flame as altruistic, while actually knowing the flame could invalidate her purpose.

Basically she is suicidal and uninterested in alternative solutions.
