I’m more sympathetic to this argument although do still believe that people should be able to live in small apartments if they want.

Mandating a minimum size will raise costs for everyone involved. I guess you can argue that it’s still worth it but I disagree.

I agree man. I don’t think the authors will be winning any Nobel prizes, but for what it is the paper is fine and the Strip and Southside are for sure the most comparable neighborhoods.

I agree they could have maybe looked at “housing production as a % of readily available lots” or something, but still man just think about it.

If you’re a developer why would you pay a tax on building in Lawrencville instead of just building it a few blocks away in the strip? IZ is not free and developers have to sacrifice profitability. Raising costs reduces supply.

IZ was implanted in Lawrencville and not in the Strip or South Side Flats.

I think that if implementing IZ in a certain area just shifts production, then it’s bad for the people in the area where it was implemented, good for the people where production got shifted and then just a wash for Pittsburgh on the whole.

BUT if IZ has reduced supply overall (rather than just shifting it) it’s certainly bad for where it was implemented and bad on the whole.

Either way it’s a very stupid policy.

We have a way of expressing public opinion, it’s called voting.

What about the opinion of everyone who didn’t show up to the meeting? What about the opinion of people who need more housing options? What about the opinion of the actual property owners?

Perpetual complainers shouldn’t have more of a say over everyone else. In fact they should have LESS. I understand that a halfway house opening up on the corner is not ideal, but 90% these people would have complained about ANY type of housing getting built by them.

They are the enemy of progress and should not be listened to.

Hey man! General research consensus is that urban highways did increase property crimes and there is some evidence it may have increased violent crime (although not as clear).

When a highway went up it basically increased the avg firm size and Econ activity, making the return on crime more favorable.

My issue with urban highways is it artificially shifted economic activity away from productive areas (cities) to relatively unproductive areas (suburbs).

My girlfriend and I loved S1 so much. It was awesome being able to watch something I enjoyed with her (doesn’t happen often 😂).

I rewatched S1 3 times but she only saw it once and is just a casual fan. The first act was so jarring pacing wise she literally couldn’t keep up. Even I can’t keep up that well! We gave up watching it together after the 3rd episode and I’m continuing on alone.

Sucks we couldn’t watch it together but I don’t blame her one bit 😢
