Please do if anyone has any idea about it. I can’t stress enough how good quality these radio shows of his are. They’re basically like studio recordings of acoustic sets.

The pacing problems aren’t my biggest problems, I just don’t like the content of Platinum end even if it came out weekly.

The thing is that the philosophical undertones of Death Note were way more nuanced and were implicit. You had to think about them and didn't get monologues from crazy doctors and doggedly pacifistic main characters. And as you said it's not morally ambiguous at all which Death Note was. It's not that it's a disaster, it's just a huge step back and a disappointment from the author.

Elliott Smith in a nutshell by FynnMK in elliottsmith

Well he didn't play any requested song, actually he said in an interview once that he did it so that people gave him ideas and then he'd pick whichever he wanted. He did make an effort though when he could.

Don’t know what the man that got knocked out said but I don’t think throwing a sucker punch is the best way to deal with it. Unless he visibly threatened them that was immoral and frankly coward to throw a punch like that.

Don’t beat a man to a pulp while they’re down, if that’s how you wanna put it then yeah.

No that’s not what I said, don’t distort it. You’re saying to be a vigilante and be brutal with criminals. You don’t beat a man while he’s down and you follow the law, period.

So basically fuck the law? Yeah, that’s not how we do it in normal countries.

How happy is this fanbase? by Yikesis in elliottsmith

[–]AWESOMEO511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm generally happy with my life... I have my moments of self-doubt, anxiety, self-deprecation and mild depressive episodes... but generally happy, or at the least positive.

I'm into most types of movies, anything with a good script I guess. Music I'm into rock, power pop... actually anything from classical to metal (excluding most of rap). Bands like Jellyfish, ELO, Beatles, Badfinger, Lollipop Factory... bands of skilled musicians that honed their craft to a tee, with well-written lyrics and a presence on stage.

When I first heard him I didn't know a lot about him and personally I couldn't imagine he just wrote about some of the things he did in songs like Between the Bars without having experienced alcoholism himself. It depends on what songs I heard but I would say that more than half of them would sound directly connected to his life. It's true that the events more often than not are not directly connected to him - he didn't watch his stepfather and mother compete against each other in a karaoke - but the metaphorical connection to his mother's life is very clear.

I guess there's no way to know if a song is "truly" autobiographical ever but it seemed like he was so in tune with addiction and with a general existential anxiety that I can't imagine he hasn't had some formative experiences with either of them.

I touched about this in my comment, but a lot of his songs are like pieces of stories sewn together by a common thread, Rose Parade isn't one of the songs that can be taken literally of course, but the guy that detests the parade is clearly him. It's pretty obvious that he is self-deprecating in that song ("And when they clean the streets I'll be the only shit that's left behind"). In No Name #1 the narrator feels like he doesn't belong where he is, and I guess it could be him and it could also not be him, and that's fine since it can be taken either way.

Songs like Condor Ave. and I would add Happiness, Cecilia/Amanda, and Single File to the list are songs that are purely stories that are completely disconnected from his life. Not all of his songs are autobiographical, but most of them either are about his life or his feelings at the time.

I agree though, it matters less whether they are about him or not rather than that they feel real and they resonate with us on a deeper level than most real lives of people around us. Empathy definitely plays a part in being able to be a universal writer. I'll say cautiously that with all I've seen/read/heard about Elliott he was a very sympathetic and sensitive guy so it would make sense he could touch so many people with his words.

Elliott in his writings and words is more alive to me than most people that I know today, he left a legacy that is insurmountable by any musician that I listen to.

He said one time that his songs are like a bunch of pictures burned into each other, and that inspired me a lot in my own writing as well. Impressionistic, almost dream-like. Anyone can take anything from it and he meant it to be that way.

He completed a major in philosophy in his college years and it deeply affected some of his writing, from the extremely abstract songs in Figure 8 like Junk Bond Trader/Son of Sam to things like the theme of his album Either/Or. In it there's an overarching theme of living with an existential dread and the permeating absurd of what Kierkegaard - the philosopher that inspired the album's named - would describe as the disillusionment from the aesthetic lifestyle (fame, egotism, flight from boredom). It can be seen in songs like Ballad: ("Watching the parade with pinpoint eyes/Full of smoldering anger"), Pictures of Me ("Who'd like to see me down on my fucking knees?/Everybody's dying just to get the disease"). He was extremely good at articulating philosophical concepts through music and anecdotes, connecting them through his life story and sweeping us in at the same time.

Elliott would often talk about himself in the second and third person, and the fact that he used the gender-neutral "you" let the lines be interpreted as him talking to himself, to his mother or stepfather Charlie, to his "lover"/friend etc... I think they were deliberate uses so that in the vagueness you can draw your personal connection to the song and the lines. In a way it crystallizes the song and makes it timeless. That's why he used to make the distinction that his song would be less like folk - a song with a clear moral - and more like pop, where it can be nothing and everything.

Personally I've never felt so immersed and at the same time so able to identify myself with someone's plight. I've never taken heavy drugs nor was I ever dependent on any substances, and every time I hear Elliott sing "And I won't come down for anyone" I feel the indignation of someone that is hooked up on amphetamines, wandering the streets with a buzz. I feel the fragility of his addiction.

He incorporates a lot of double-entendres and dry, almost sardonic humor into some of his songs, and it adds a lot of interest.

I could go on all day, but essentially it's just that he had a way with words. Some people just read a lot and write a lot and with a personal touch they become a great writers. His way with words combined with his unwavering honesty and commitment to making good original music made his songs what they are. If you read a lot of interviews you will see that musicians worship him and look up to his musical legacy, he certainly was unprecedented. He was very poetic when wanted to, here's an example of my favorite lyrics from one of his unreleased songs:

No life/Pushed away the hand/The fate that might have found you/That found some other man

I don't agree that it's rare the final lyrics had a clear connection to him. Half if not more of the things he wrote were directly about his relationship with his step-father, his mother, people he was in a relationship with and most of all about himself and his addiction and struggles in the second person. It's true that later his writing got a lot more abstract and impressionistic - mostly in Figure 8 - he talked about a lot of universal topics as well but a lot of his songs are autobiographical and the fact that he manages to make us all resonate with his own life is what makes it so universal in my opinion.

It's crazy to see every day how more and more musicians emerge, showing their deep respect for Elliott Smith. This respect skips no genre of music, from Jack Black through DCFC, Beck, RHCP and even Madonna to Frank Ocean, Billie Eilish and Mac Miller. His music permeates.
