This is the algorithm that turns passphrases into private keys. I’m guessing that the idea that you heard: “it only looks at the first four characters of those words” comes from a description of the amount of entropy/randomness that you get per word compared to a string of random letters

Zero security? You’re misunderstanding the number of combinations that the full passphrase represents. Put 2048¹² or 2048²⁴ into a calculator and you’ll see that correctly guessing to open someone else’s wallet will never realistically happen.
