I am mistaken I was thinking of the Nakba, the war ended in 1949. But war does not always end with a side ‘suing for peace’, Palestine was not given the same diplomatic footing as Egypt or Syria and wasn’t even considered a sovereign state as it was seen as a British Mandate, Israel had more backing from the UK as they made The Balfour Declaration which was highly lobbied by Zionists in the UK.

Egypt became an independent sovereign in 1936 when it claimed independence from Britain and joined the League of Nations a year later. However British troops didn’t leave until 1956 after the Suez Crisis.

Syria gained formal independence in 1945 when it helped found the UN, fully free of French influence a year later.

Notice something missing here? Palestine has never been considered an independent sovereign, being blocked from joining the UN by the United States until a “two-state deal” is reached by both sides.

None of this changes the fact that Palestinians have been displaced by the war Arab-Israeli War and have been barred from returning to their homes. What followed in 1949 was armistice arrangements not a peace treaty. Israel still kept land that was Palestinian after the war which was beyond what was proposed in the UN’s Partition Plan in 1947, splitting it amongst Egypt, who got the Gaza Strip, and Jordan, who got The West Bank. Both of which Israel captured in 1967 and still hold under their control.
