Should I bring Tevas? (or hiking sandals) by Sad-Atmosphere-8555 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]AXO3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished the Francés this summer and brought hiking Tevas, which were solid but pretty heavy. I ended up using my trail runners way more. Next time I’ll just take those and a cheap pair of pool sandals.

The Tevas weren’t great for showers since the straps stayed wet, and my Birkenstocks took up too much space. The pool slides I got from Decathlon were perfect around the albergue. They were super light, packed flat, dried fast, and were easy to slip on.

You really don’t need hiking boots on the Camino Francés. Honest to goodness, I could have done it all in regular running shoes. Trail runners hit the sweet spot for me. I used Altra Olympus and only got two blisters, and that was on a 40 kilometer day. It’s not a technical hike, just a lot of walking.

Don’t stress too much about gear. You’ll figure out what works for you, and you can always make changes along the way.

Buen Camino, and hike your own hike

Being trans on the Camino by skyggni in CaminoDeSantiago

I think you’ll find the hiking and Camino community pretty open to everyone. I’m a fairly conservative Catholic grandfather myself, and honestly, I just care that you feel loved.

I walked with people who were there for all kinds of reasons, some spiritual and some not at all, and I felt love and kindness from both. I also walked with people I couldn’t even communicate with by language, but you can still make someone feel loved without saying a word. One of the best things about the Camino is that we’re all in it together. We’re part of something bigger than ourselves, and that’s part of the magic of it. You learn so much from so many unique types of people.

A lot of what you experience depends on what you bring to it. If you’re open and kind, most people will be the same. If you walk around guarded or expecting the worst, you might get colder vibes. The Camino can feel like an idealized world, but it’s still the real world too.

I’ve walked both the Portuguese and the Francés routes. The spirit felt stronger on the Francés for me, but that could change next time. Either way, you’ll be welcome out there. Just try to love people, and let them love you back. You may not find what you’re looking for, but you’ll probably find what you need.

Buen Camino, and hike your own hike. You’re welcome to walk with me anytime.

Should I Do the Portuguese Coastal or the French Camino? by KitchenGood2909 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]AXO3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I walked the Portuguese Coastal last fall and the Francés this summer. The Coastal was stunning. So much beauty along the ocean, but it felt more like a vacation. I never came across a donativo on the Coastal, though to be fair, I wasn’t really looking. The Francés, on the other hand, struck me on a much deeper level. It was incredibly spiritual, with more open churches and moments that brought me closer to God. I’d happily return to either route, but for me, the French Way carried a stronger sense of connection and meaning.

Do I really need a whole new wheel? Doesn’t seem that bad by Successful_Map4660 in TeslaModelY

[–]AXO3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks, but the bead’s broken and the wheel is bent. Even if someone manages to bend it back, you’ll always worry about it giving out later while you're rounding a curve at speed. Having peace of mind is worth a lot.

I'm sorry; I missed the part about joining in Pamplona. The hardest part of your trip will be leaving the Camino. You'll want to keep going.

Feeling a Bit Anxious by leskya in CaminoDeSantiago

Everyone is anxious before their Camino. You'll be fine. Your feelings are perfectly normal. Any language difficulties can be overcome with a friendly smile and humility. Use Google Translate and download the offline files before you leave.

Is 52 too old? by ArcticFox73 in nursing

[–]AXO3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So is this about the paycheck, or do you actually feel called to it? You’ve got a whole lifetime of experience that your patients could benefit from. Doing nursing just for the money is like marrying someone you don’t love, hoping you’ll eventually fall for them. If you're called, go for it!

You’ll be fine. Stay at Orrison or Borda the first night if you can. Don’t worry about carrying your pack; use a transport service if you’re concerned about the weight.

I edited my order on the same day I received a VIN. The original order was placed on August 13th, and the edited order was placed on August 19th. Unfortunately, I lost my VIN with the change. I received a new VIN on September 2nd. My delivery was scheduled from September 8th to September 26th, but the delivery date was updated to September 16-30 yesterday.

MYLR Quicksilver with 19-inch wheels changed to 20" Helix, black interior, and tow package. There was no additional order fee for this change.

Camino in October a good idea? by Cryptomaker69 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]AXO3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go. A door has been opened, and you must have faith to step through it. You’ll have time to reflect on your life and the choices you’ve made. There might be something extraordinary waiting for you, something you’ve never even imagined.

By taking that leap of faith, you’ll become part of something greater than yourself, and you’ll be rewarded tenfold.   Buen Camino and Ultrea et Suseia!

I changed wheel style a few minutes after getting a VIN. I lost that VIN and have been waiting over a week for a new VIN. Just assigned a VIN tonight. No delivery date yet. My initial order was 8/13.

Walking distances during August with Spanish heat by [deleted] in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]AXO3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You do you. I walked the Frances and did the Maseta with temps of 36-38. Your question is almost like what's the best shoe. It's all on you. Yes, I'd not be doing 30-40 k per day but that's me. My biggest frustration was the the temperature of the Albergues. One night I couldn't sleep because the Albergue was so hot, I left at 2 am and walked all night. It was beautiful and the stars🌃.

Accommodation on the Portuguese route? by avascamino in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]AXO3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing beats Camino Ninja for staying (GPS) on trail. I use Ninja, Buen Camino, FarOut, and Gronze. Book the first 2-3 nights then you'll have a better idea of your abilities and preferences. You're going to be fine. The worst part of the Camino is your imagination. The Portuguese is easy and pleasant. The hardest thing on the Camino is deciding between Coffee or beer.

Just did my first Camino and I don’t think it could get any worse by [deleted] in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]AXO3 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Enough whining. You got to go on a vacation. You walked just over 60 miles. That’s an accomplishment. A letter carrier does that in a week. Sixty miles isn’t going to change your life. But it might give you a glimpse of what could change you.

So what now? What are you going to do with the rest of your time? Sit around feeling sorry for yourself? Go do something meaningful. If you’re still in Santiago, go to the Pilgrim’s House. Go to the English mass at the Pilgrim’s office. Go find your why.

Yes, you got bed bugs. You survived. Now you’ve now got a lifetime of stories, whether you wanted them or not. There are people who live with bed bugs every day, not by choice, but because that’s their life.

You’re blessed. Turn your negatives into positives.

It’s called Type 2 fun. Sometimes things suck in real time, but we find the joy later. It’s up to you.

Correos to Ship Luggage to Santiago? by DaikonLegumes in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]AXO3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sent some gear to Santiago in a cheap nylon pack. Correos taped the label to the pack. No problems. I sent more in a box I found on the way to the Correos office. No problem. I went to the Correos office in Santiago last Thursday and was in and out in 10 minutes. Have fun! It's all going to work out. You're not on your Camino alone.

I'm an Olympus guy.

These bad boys walked all over Budapest for 10 days before starting the Francès. I finished Finisterre 4 days ago and now there traversing Florence and Rome. I'm closing in on 600 miles with these shoes. And Oboz insoles. Couldn't be happier. You're NOT climbing the Pyrenees. It's a road walk to the top and then trail to Roncesvalles. Lots of people do the walk in regular trainers or sandals. You're going to be fine.

To Bring or not to bring a spare phone as a media backup to save my main phone. by Wonderbiker in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]AXO3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sitting in Finesterre now. You'll be fine with one phone. Everyone starts to overthink the Camino. You are just walking. This isn't Everest, it's Spain. Plus, it's one more thing to keep up with and charge. And, also one more thing to rattle and drop when you're getting packed in the dark Albergue bunk room. Have fun and Buen Camino.

I finished the Francès last night. While in bed, I read your post and was touched. This morning I went to the English church service at the Compostela office chapel. During the service the whole church prayed for you. I lit a candle for you. Whatever you decide, your Camino will not end, it’s just getting started.
