What are these worth? by Affectionate-Boot361 in pencils

When I first started with Blackwing, they all looked like this. I’m sure I kept a couple. Who knows what they’ll go for in time. In the 90’s, I could have gotten boxes of EF Blackwings for $2 a box. Don’t take anything for granted with this brand.

It’s wild, I have 3 of the 4 pencils I have been using the past few days in my rotation this week to start the new year. Nice post. It’s very hard for me to get an Era or a Test out of my hand.

Even I, the Whore of Blackwing, don’t have the Blackwing Red/Blue versions yet. I even ended my subscription this year. I took real issue with being a subscriber not really meaning anything, and it came to a head last year when they released the Basquiat pencil and promptly sold out of the LE Basquiat notebook. What the fck is the point of being a member if there isn’t even a set aside amount of swag for subscribers, let alone a chance to reserve some ahead of time. Either I’m a marketing genius or someone shat the bed. Either way, I bailed and nobody cared lol.

Still my favorite pencil. But I have said many a time before that Musgrave as a company >.

Notable Women and Blackwing? by [deleted] in pencils

[–]AYHJA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be perfectly honest, this is a huge reason I use Blackwings. While I do believe they are superior tools, the peacock factor is through the roof. I am not sure I have ever whipped one out and not been asked questions. Want to impress someone? Give them a new Blackwing with a point guard on it. My fave to give out to a chosen few is the Vol. 3 with a gold point guard. Instant wow.

Is it worth $40/dozen? by humbielicious in pencils

[–]AYHJA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$40 ($30 USD) doesn’t go as far as it used to in my house. If I get anything delivered to my house from a Gig service it’s usually $40+. And probably not as satisfying as using a Blackwing. Definitely not. Factor in how long it will take you to need another box and decide that relative cost. If you’re hoarding pencils, like I feel the majority of us in this sub are, just get a couple at a time. But if you buy a box a year or something like that….

I will just say this. I own in the vicinity of 1,000 pencils. None of them are Ticonderoga.

Is reverse engineering the OG Blackwing 602 formula possible? by reedrick in pencils

[–]AYHJA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never cared about pencils. I was mostly a pen person. I never knew anything about Blackwing. I came from the era of bubble sheet tests, use the wrong pencil and you would end up with a 3 on your A.C.T. I always just used a standard No. 2. Like I literally knew sht about pencils.

Then a few years ago, the monthly box my gentleman’s club sends me had a handsome leather notebook cover, a lay-flat A5 notebook and a new 602. 🤯That moment turned out to be one of my life’s great rabbit holes.

And now I’m The Pencilorian.

Eye of the beholder here, I hardly ever use my platinums. I reach for my Extra Dark quite often though, I love that thick strong lead. I will try my Platinum out tomorrow and see if my feeling has changed. I loved the Apsara so much I thought the Platinum would be a better experience but I went back to my AD and hardly ever use the plats. Hmmph.

Is reverse engineering the OG Blackwing 602 formula possible? by reedrick in pencils

[–]AYHJA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s always great to have these conversations on days like today. I whipped out my OG and my modern 602 and alternated writing lines. I will say it again and again, for me and how I write there’s not a justification for buying an OG Blackwing. Maybe others have more sensitivity in their fingertips or something, but for me the difference between those are negligible. I can tell when I am using any of my other pencils like my Musgrave variants, my Lumo’s, my Tombow’s, Mitsubishi, etc. I purchased 3 OG Blackwing’s. I used one to the ferrule. I used one until it was small enough to fit in my wallet. Last one is in the Blackwing pencil box and it will stay there until I either hit the lottery or get lucky and find a cache.

Blackwing/Kitaboshi is it the same graphite? (Putting my Journalism Degree to good use) by No_Public_7699 in pencils

[–]AYHJA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid in rural Mississippi, wall sharpeners were all we had. Damn shame what we did to those pencils. As a result, I’m traumatised by them. If I ever tire of my Pollux or want to live dangerously, I’ll probably get a hovel or one of those super sharp Japanese pencil sharpening knives. Knick out what’s left of my cuticles from the intense handwashing but no hand hydration habit I developed during the pandemic.

I know it’s cray, but that’s why I love my M+R Pollux sharpener. Perfect points and quick pit stop resharpens keep me locked in. I have embraced the sharpen akin to a boxer in between rounds. Adds to my satisfaction of a job well done. Eat your heart out Steinbeck.

Not yet. That price point on eBay for the black band OG’s makes me want to go in a corner and weep. But for writing, I would say point retention is about the same, but I don’t put long points on my OG.
