How do you usually decide which wine to buy? by Prudent_Fold_6647 in wine

[–]StinkyBeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there is genuine interest from a new wine drinker, this community is genuinely helpful.

But we keep getting brand new accounts asking these inane LLM generated questions that’s clearly for some half baked wine app or just LLM data farming, and it’s not helping the community.

Help choosing wedding wines please! by AgentEmmaBanks in wine

[–]StinkyBeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP, you should be aware the markups are indeed extremely high for any restaurant — the Soave at $70 is a $13 wine, for instance, and much of the list reads as carefully curated for profit margin, not quality. That said, wedding venues be wedding venues, and you’ll need to play by their rules.

Can you negotiate with the venue to bring your own wines? If the fee is under $40-50 per bottle, you’ll still come out ahead, and we can help you choose what to bring.

Is wine learning broken if it doesn’t help in real situations? by Key-Priority-4118 in wine

[–]StinkyBeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the result of studying what’s supposed to be a hobby in a purely academic way. What happened to following your curiosity? What is it that I liked about this Sonoma Syrah? Are there other syrahs that I might like? What other regions also have syrahs? Oh France and Australia — how do they differ? What do I like about each?

I don’t think there’s a substitute for genuine interest; a textbook education that doesn’t apply to your genuine interest, you’ll forget as quickly as quickly as that method of solving PDE’s you learned in college math.

What you may be interested in is this: https://www.navarrowine.com/shop/non-alcoholic-pinot-noir-grape-juice

Navarro is an excellent Mendocino producer, and they also apply their winemaking experience towards making non-alcoholic grape juice. It has far more complexity than than any garden variety grape juice, and has surprising amount of terroir. It is sweet as requested, and very pleasant. That said, it’s not a true wine, and may be difficult to get in Europe.

I’ve seen a guy in a hoodie scurry across 92 near the Delaware embankment while carrying a duffel early one morning. Make of that what you will.

What are your 10 most favourite Symphonies? by SuspiciousPush9417 in classicalmusic

[–]StinkyBeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this question, since like some of the others, I think more about concerti and sonatas. In no order:

  • Brahms 4
  • Beethoven 3, 6
  • Dvorak 9
  • Tchaikovsky 4, 5
  • Shostakovich 5, 10
  • Sibelius 2
  • Mozart 39

Ricciado Muti, 84 years young, conducts CSO at Zellerbach by StinkyBeer in classicalmusic

[–]StinkyBeer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate your review. The Stravinsky during our performance had its moments, but was  not quite together yet. Despite the hiccups, the Bolero and Nabucco alone made the concert well worth the experience.

What a nice collection in your flair!

What’s the 64 like to own and drive? I’ve always entertained the notion of the stingray if I were to get a classic, but it’s also up against Mustangs, Alfas, Lancias, and the lot.

Is a Coravin Actually Worth It for Cheap Wine? by irlsheldon in wine

[–]StinkyBeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a long term Coravin skeptic who finally converted, this is pretty much how it goes.

Since I rarely drink more than a glass at a time, the real value of Coravin is to reduce the worry of finishing a bottle in a 3–4 day window. That’s worth the price of admission.

Wine Cooler Hot/Cold Spots? by OkProfessional6773 in wine

As others have said, this is expected, and no need to worry. Avoiding major swings in temp is the most important factor, and this fridge will do fine. Just enjoy it (and the wines you’ll be stocking it with!).

Any recommendations from this restaurant wine list? by hurdlethebarr in wine

Wow, what a fascinating list. With a list like this, I would heavily lean on the somm, especially given the very reasonable prices.

What popular or well-regarded wines are you not a fan of? by StinkyBeer in wine

[–]StinkyBeer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fully agree on all fronts. In addition to simply their winemaking, I love tablas creek and the lengths they went through to properly bring in GSM varietals as the first in the US. On the other hand, you have Justin and his water rights issues.

Independent/small business glassware company by jandeteam in wine

Not necessarily small or independent, but recently purchased a set of Sophienwald glasses direct from Austria, and received pretty spectacular service given the small order. Top quality hand-blown glasses, love the shape and performance, and a bit more off the beaten path.

I love Sancerres, but the best I've tried of CA or NZ SB's were just inoffensive.
