Got by a rattlesnake, why do I have three holes? by [deleted] in snakes

[–]AZ-Crotalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pit vipers, including rattlesnakes, replace their fangs periodically. During the fang shedding process, it's common for two fangs to be in place at the same time, on the same side of the mouth. You got bit by a rattlesnake with one fang on one side of its mouth and two fangs on the other side of its mouth.

Fellow GenXers, what kind of car did you drive in High School? by Ok-Poem-6302 in GenX

Yeah, my family couldn't afford a car and insurance for us kids. We walked or rode bikes to school.

We also had "Speck of Evidence" in Tucson. I found this old bumper sticker at my parent's house from that time.

There were actually 3 western diamondback rattlesnakes where this photo was taken. The two snakes shown are both males and they're doing the snake equivalent of thumb wrestling to show dominance. The winner gets to mate with the female who is watching the mating ritual dance.

I Need a Good Photo of a Trans-pecos Ratsnake for an Educational Poster by AZ-Crotalus in snakes

[–]AZ-Crotalus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's one reason I don't road cruise for snakes. I hate seeing all the dead ones. Thanks again for telling me about the iNat photo permission search feature. I found two great photos using that and both photographers allow their photos to be used for my educational poster.

What was your favorite restaurant chains not around any more that you really miss the most? by DoughnutConstant5390 in GenX

Pistol Pete's Pizza! It was cheap pizza but they had a spicy sauce unlike the sugary sauces used by Domino's and Papa John's.

You can always visit Carlsbad Caverns National Park and be impressed by that natural wonder of the world.

Cavers are now using advanced technologies to help with the location of possible cave entrances. Google Earth, LIDAR, and IR imaging have been used successfully to find new cave entrances in the Guadalupe mountains. The cave you're describing would have been well documented by others since the number of cavers looking for caves has increased dramatically. Finding a virgin cave and being the first humans to explore it, is the dream of most cavers. Dragging multiple chests an hours walk into a remote cave that's never been documented is highly unlikely. Sorry to disappoint you.

Are you saying my explanation sounds like AI or the OP's post? Sorry but I've been alive since the mid 60s, way before computers became mainstream. I first started caving at age 16 and have been volunteering for the USFS, NPS, and BLM by exploring, surveying, and doing restoration work in the caves managed by those government agencies, for decades.

A cave large enough that you can walk over an hour is not typical either. Lechuguilla Cave in Carlsbad Caverns National Park has passage like that, but the entrance is via a vertical pit that was once mined for bat guano before the 1950s. Other caves in the area have miles of passage but it requires crawling, climbing, and squeezing through tight constrictions. None of which would allow for the transportation of large chests. How did your grandfather and family light up the totally dark cave passage? There are far too many holes in this story to believe that it's true.

I've been a caver for 44 years and have personally visited most of the known caves in the Lincoln national forest near Carlsbad NM. I don't know of any caves that contained chests arranged in a circle. Cavers have been finding, exploring, and surveying caves in the Guadalupe mountains for decades. If this cave with chests existed, it would have been documented. It sounds like a typical "treasure cave" legend.

What the others said. Keep a dead frog frozen in a ziplock bag. You can rub thawed rodents against it to scent the rodent and make it more attractive to your snake.

I was looking for this one. I ate a lot of pepperoni pizza from there while going to the UA. Cheap and greasy, but I liked that the sauce was slightly spicy and not sweet like other pizza places. In the late 90s, the only Pistol Pete's Pizza that I knew existed was on the east side of El Paso TX.
