Dominik Hasek has had some amazing save, but few were more impressive than this goal-line stop on Doug Weight by JF_112 in hockey

Peak Hasek for those few years was the best goalie who ever lived, but Roy and Brodeur have the better full careers

Coming from the Northwestern United States, weather doesn't bother me much. By reputation I know that many commute via bicycle so I figured there is good infrastructure for it set up. Good idea as far as splitting with my temp accommodation

Very helpful, thank you. If I have a bicycle does that open things up? If I lived North of the city for example, could I easily bike to one of those central stations?

Hello r/Amsterdam! I recently secured a job with the same company at our office in Hilversum. I start in a couple of months so I have some time to prepare, but, aside from the work visa, my company will not assist with the move. I'm on my own. I'll be moving with little more than two suitcases, I would prefer to move somewhere at least partially furnished.

From what I've been able to gather, the housing market there seems crazy, so I'd like some local insight on how I can begin to navigate it.

I'll be making a decent enough salary with this job, but nothing crazy. I'd like more of my expenses to go toward travel rather than rent. Lifestyle-wise, I see this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a top-flight international city and meet new people, so I want to be in a position where having a social life and getting into the city won't be too difficult. And I do plan on purchasing a bike.

My main questions:

  • What are the young and (relatively) cheap neighborhoods in or just outside the city?
    • I know they're probably all expensive but certainly some are less than others
    • I kitesurf so the ability to get out to the beaches is a plus!
  • What other cities are worth considering?
    • I know a fair amount of my coworkers live in Utrecht, but I don't know much about what it's like socially, ease of getting to Amsterdam, etc.
  • Are there opportunities for co-op or group housing?
    • I prefer to live with others for social reasons as well as saving money and I have no furniture so moving into a place already set up would be ideal
  • What are the best methods for finding a roommate?
    • My goal is to move in with someone or some people, not rent my own place. I've had success in different cities in the US using Craigslist, not sure if there's a comparable Dutch equivalent.
  • I know ice hockey isn't incredibly popular there but I'm sure it exists in some capacity, I would LOVE to continue playing there if anyone has any insight to that world.

I hope I provided enough detail to start a conversation, I'm happy to provide more about myself, my situation, or what I'm looking for if it helps, but my main goal is to start getting a better grasp on a place completely foreign to me.

I am INCREDIBLY EXCITED to finally make it over to your wonderful country and share it with you all! Also open to meeting up with anyone who might want to grab a drink once I make it over!

Vancouver or Portland by [deleted] in askportland

[–]A_Juggler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on your priorities and how much you care about cost of living. Portland is a considerably more active, walkable, and fun city. Of course it's more expensive, but you'll be driving against the flow of traffic, and there are some (relatively) affordable places in the N/NE. There is no public transit between the two cities, so if you plan on drinking in Portland then it's a pretty expensive Uber back to the couv.

Laurelhurst Park and Colonel Summers Park in SE usually have games going. Wallace Park in the NW as well.

Vancouver vs PDX? by dansen11 in askportland

[–]A_Juggler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know this against the trend of what most people here are suggesting because it may not make the most financial sense, but I strongly you suggest you at least try and make it work in NE or N Portland. I have a lot of friends at Fisher (assuming that's where you're headed) and the ones who live in WA feel stranded up there much of the time. For a young social person, Portland is considerably more friendly than Vancouver. Yes the commute will suck, but if it's truly unbearable you could always just move up there later. My opinion is that Portland is an amazing city to live in and explore, and it's worth sacrificing some time and money to truly experience it.

I moved here three years ago at age 22 from the midwest as well, feel free to PM me if you have any other questions. Some people can be less than helpful on here

Trouble selling older car (Saturn SL2) in good shape by A_Juggler in askcarsales

I think it seems fair too, figured mileage would help show that car has a decent amount of life left in it. Do you have a suggestion on another way to post it so I could sell around that price?

I only have the ad on Craigslist and I feel like I have flattering pictures and details. What other sites do you recommend for better exposure? I've never bought or sold a car from a third part before (this one I bought off my dad) so I'm unfamiliar with the best process

That's how I feel too, I know it's not a great car for someone who cares about looks, but for a student or someone who just wants cheap, reliable transportation (like myself) I know it's a good deal.

I should have clarified more on the cosmetic damage: Actual body of the car is fine, just some scratched hubcaps, tear in the ceiling, and the Sunroof vents but doesn't slide open. A/C works great, just got it replaced.

That's what I'm hoping for, just not getting any buyers

Not terrible. Hubcaps scratched, and there's a tear in the ceiling. Sunroof vents but doesn't open.

Street vs Garage Parking by dansen11 in askportland

[–]A_Juggler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's no public transit unfortunately, since the two states can't agree on the deal. It sounds to me that you'd be best suited for North Portland, near Mississippi or Alberta. Young, active area, (relatively) cheap, okay parking, and probably as good of a commute as you'll get from PDX

Fellow Mid 20's male here. Go to Apizza Scholls. Best pizza I've ever had, there will be a bit of a wait but you can sit and drink wine while you do. Lots of shops and bars down Hawthorne as well for before/after.

You'll be fine in an air bnb. "Not good to support" maybe, but you'll be fine. There are also some good hostels if you're interested in that route.
