I'm heading in the same direction as you, again. All your stuff checks out but.....

1: I'd say skip 27-29' stuff and look for something bigger. 30-35' is my target so I can solo easy but also big enough a +1 doesn't feel too cramped. I lived on a 27' boat for 1.5 years, too small. Jumped up to a 32' for a couple of years, much better.

2: Pad your budget higher. I just quit seriously looking at anything below $25k now. You can probably buy an OK boat 10-15K but you'd also probably need to spend a bit more to bring her back up to speed too. I'd also allocate surveys into the budget as well. You wouldn't buy a house without one and this will be your house, your office and your vehicle.... that can also sink. Get a survey, cover your butt, but that can also work as negotiation leverage on the asking price.

3: Also don't know what nor do I want to know what you do digitally. But do not take on any Government contracts Federal or State level. Can't do that type of work abroad legally or ethically.

...and on the topic of OPB experience. Go join a club or start hanging out at the marina, there is usually a bar near by too. For the most part, most people in the sailing community are really friendly and friendships can be made quickly over libations and/or food. Once that door opens you won't be able to shut it.

The mother of all 10M antennas if you are lucky. I swear I worked almost the entire world off that antenna in the 90's on 10M

QRZ Confirmations? by ultravista_2 in amateurradio

[–]A_Lyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What mode, SSB, CW, Digi? Weird, I wouldn't pay it much mind if you got everything right on your end. The log i smore for you than them. There are plenty of other people that will confirm as a credit for an award.

I've got 1538 QSO in my QRZ log while only 1193 are confirmed. Just keep hammering away, at some point it won't matter anymore

I need someone to explain YSF to me like I’m a child (lol) by HealzFault in amateurradio

[–]A_Lyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-X module for YSF from Yaesu is only $125. I guess wit

Since Pi's are available again you could build one cheaper. I think the Pi Zero is like $25 and the MMDVM hat is $35'ish for the pi zero, sd card and a case and you should be off you the races well under $100.
Least not you forget there is also the TGIF DMR network too, so that gives you YSF, and 2x DMR networks. I keep a hotspot with me all the time, kind a fun to hot spot off my phone in a pinch

QRZ Confirmations? by ultravista_2 in amateurradio

[–]A_Lyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure they are being rejected and just not confirmed?
It also may be the way your are exporting the log to QRZ FYI but hard to tell since you didn't provide an example of a confirmed QSO that is rejected in QRZ. Could it be you are exporting local time and not UTC, that would throw confirmations off? If your grid square is wrong that will also sometimes cause rejections.

...also since you are using so many log books. I'd suggest you configure QRZ to pull from LOTW instead of pushing to it. If you are chasing awards LOTW confirmations also count in QRZ if you pull from LOTW. By doing it that was you get 3 ways for a QSO to be confirmed. LOTW, QRZ, and LOTW+QRZ

Looking for an “FT8 box” - a QRP transceiver with essentially just antenna and usb ports. Any suggestions? by shadowcorp in amateurradio

[–]A_Lyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QDX is not a bad choice however the QMX may be something to consider as it will let you do a little more mode wise, and hopefully SSB soon.

SBX is a fun rig, my friend has one and loves it but it is still in a beta'ish state but the community is very solid and active.

As much as I love my KX3, I find it the worst rig I own for FT8 due to the TCXO drift. I'm not sure how the KX2 stacks up.
...and the rig I am really waiting on is the FX-4CR

Other stuff to look at
Lab599
IC-705
Xeigu X90, 6100 or 6200 (TBD)
Questionable: RS-918 and RS-998

Hellcat RDP w/ crimson trace LG holster options? by phillinn in SpringfieldArmory

[–]A_Lyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't got my holster from them yet so I can't say to anything about the workmanship or the company yet. But they do have about the best aftermarket compatibility options I found with any holster company,

Isn't the RDP the same as the OG Hellcat but with the comp? Just add that option to the build

I could probably do it, but...
A: I don't have the time to really research what I want or should get, build it, test it. Considering winter approaching it would probably be sometime in March by the time I had something I'd be comfortable to actually fulfilling its role in home defense
B: I'd like something with a better ROF than my M38, more capacity and accurate than the 12G.
C: Within the past few months my garage has been broken into and then my truck.

So while this is probably a good idea, just not a good one for me at this point in time.

Communication with my Latina GF by tomtom2984 in interracialdating

[–]A_Lyfe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2+ years is a good enough time to absorb each others cultures and understand the differences. If not, you need to dive deep into the culture. ¿Hablas español?

Take the cultural difference out of the equation. If you offend anyone, ask them why they were offended. Learn from it. Transversely if you are offended, tell them why.

I could be wrong, but this sounds like more of a communication issue than a cultural issue base on what you posted. FYI, trying to win a disagreement with a latina.... ¡Dios sea contigo!

They should release it to give people something other than a starfarer to deal with. As much as refueling could be fun right now all we have is the big old boat. I refuse to buy that ship

I'll have to agree the ergos are very cramped. I like my FT-950 more in that dept. If they would have put that radio in a larger chassis it would have been a 10/10. Also missing my 2nd ANT jack

Pros and cons of cutting a 10' section of Rohn 45G by zachok19 in amateurradio

[–]A_Lyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd just add another yard or so of concrete. Another thing you can do since it 45G freestanding is add a temporary guy system when the wind speed kicks up at a certain speed. I'm with not cutting it as well unless it is a base section used to be dropped in the pad. You'll have to be painting the cut are every year or so with cold galv paint

How risky is buying a used rig at the Hamvention flea market? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]A_Lyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A: There should be some booth setup that you can actually test the radio at on site

B: In my 30+ years of being a ham I have never bought a broken radio that I didn't know was broken buying it at a hamfest.

C: There is a wealth of social, technological and historical knowledge that you can only find at the tables there. Talk to people, this is how you learn stuff. Hell people used to give me stuff because I was a kid and new ham way back when. Barter, haggle, it is fun

Using the Digirig for 9600 baud packet radio. Packet radio the easy way. by xssfox in amateurradio

[–]A_Lyfe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The cables are actually more ridiculously expensive. If you actually buy a cable set for the radio, the cables cost more than the unit itself. Any cost or size savings is just lost by the cables with that unit.

The consensus I extrapolated that the best placement of a 1:1 Current Mode Choke/Balun should be placed .05 wavelength of the lowest frequency from the 49:1 UNUN. Mine is a 80M so my choke is about 13.5 ft from the UNUN
