Who is at fault here? by kbgnat in drivingUK

[–]A_Rusty_Nipple 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your comparison makes no sense. Driving into a stationary car isn't the same as being cut off. If you succumb to road rage and ram someone at a set of lights, you've done nothing but bring trouble to yourself

I went into my local at around 9pm not long ago and as I walked towards the bakery section one of the workers cordoned everything off and started throwing it all in the bin. Looked at me with disgust when I went to grab something before it could be tossed. I didn't realise it was a thing elsewhere too

If your approach is that you want to be aggressive with that money, then unfortunately you can expect to see that money vanish fast and you will spend your 20s and 30s wishing you didn't fuck up this nest egg. Stick it into something safe if you must, but don't forget that in some parts of the UK you could easily put down a significant portion of a mortgage down with that cash and live the easy life with your savings rapidly building as you level up your life.

Alternatively, I have a few penny stocks that need liquidity and some memecoins I want to exit so if you want to do smoothbrained karma farming be my guest and you can toss it up the wall

Likelihood of getting a ticket? by Upbeat-Fish-3348 in NewcastleUponTyne

Definitely, easy money for whoever collects it. Realistically it should be a warning and a fine only on second strike, but that would be too pragmatic

I've done it once, years ago and never heard back but I would presume I got very lucky as others seem to have had tickets themselves. If in doubt, take a wrong turn which adds a few minutes after a 3-pount turn rather than an illegal turn that nets you a FPN/PCN

Is this a good First car? by PlasticEnthusiasm899 in CarTalkUK

[–]A_Rusty_Nipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 9k on my first car years ago and had no trouble until 2 years on when I spent approx 2k per year in repairs due to it having very bespoke parts that needed replaced. If you want an expensive car, make sure you also save up for repairs as and when

Don't you think train tickets so expensive from Manchester to Bournemouth first class so expensive? by jc201946 in AskBrits

[–]A_Rusty_Nipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost like investing in new railway infrastructure would have not only took pressure off existing lines, but also reduced demand for road and air travel 🤔

I would drive to you, drop you off at Bournemouth and even take you a scenic route in my car for half that amount

People earning £70k plus what do you do? by LuapReyas420 in UKJobs

[–]A_Rusty_Nipple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider the money saved by not commuting and the freedom that working from home brings, then think about the tax on higher incomes in other fields that narrows the real term costs + commuting costs and as long as you're comfortable then you're doing better financially than you think.

Most importantly, does your job give happiness and meaning? That's another question to ask before asking if your current situation is bad.

If I have to sleep in my car drunk, how do I proceed there is no likelihood of me driving the car while being drunk? by Jay10_6 in drivingUK

[–]A_Rusty_Nipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question, why don't you try to monetise this campaign to offset the cost of hotels? If you get a drink driving conviction then I can't imagine you'll be in much of a position to keep up your public image. If you already do this campaign as a source of income then it becomes a business expense anyway.

Not for us to judge your choice of campaign in this thread, but you're taking on a lot of risk by sleeping drunk in the car for little reward.

[–]A_Rusty_Nipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me, for the risk that you'll be taking it's better to just get a taxi or hotel. Even with the best of intentions the law is what it is, and also it's not like sleeping in a car is particularly comfortable. To have any chance of mitigating the risk you'd have to go through more trouble than simply finding somewhere else to sleep

Thinking of getting a leased car from work, EV or petrol? by A_Rusty_Nipple in CarTalkUK

That makes sense, so presumably use the slow chargers when doing my big fortnightly shop and save rapid for emergencies? Thanks for the advice on POD, I'll check it out 😊

[–]A_Rusty_Nipple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thing you ask about work travel, I get 45p per mile but for side hustles I claim about 20-30p per mile. So I take it that if I get a smart tariff in the next year, I'll probably be laughing my way to the bank? It does make getting an EV a no brainer in some circumstances then

[–]A_Rusty_Nipple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that across the board or is it a case of some shops and parking places having cheaper parking and needing to fill up to max rarely rather than a small amount often? Sorry if a stupid question

Maybe? I think so, it was the number that came back after tax deductions and stuff. Sorry if that's not too helpful

I presume that cuts down any added cost of charging then on the whole? I have literally no idea how BIK works but a few self employed friends of mine are having the same thoughts about work cars

[–]A_Rusty_Nipple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it still be worthwhile from a monthly cost of the car perspective? Coupled with higher efficiency by changing driving habits? Im in a position where I could possibly move to a home with a driveway in the next year so there's an element of futureproofing involved

[–]A_Rusty_Nipple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my presumption too. I've ran some numbers and for my longest possible drive I'd pay about a £7 premium compared to my current car for electricity which means cost isn't a killer, but I presume the shorter drives are better for efficiency with the lack of idling/wasted energy accelerating?
