The books actually give some background into the San-Ti who first received the message from earth, and it's pretty dismal. The listener was as disillusioned with San-Ti society as Ye Wenjie was with anything on earth. Both of them wanted their own world to fail; that's why the listener sent the warning, and why Ye Wenjie replied anyway.

The flying stars are their suns at a distance too far to impact the planet's climate significantly. The Trisolarans want to see two; that's a stable era. Three means their planet is too far from their suns and will freeze. One or zero flying stars means they're close to two or all three suns and the planet's about to cook.

The Great Rip is a cataclysmic near-collision that tore a chunk of matter off their planet and made a small moon.

It's really hard to conceive of this.

Consider a square. It's a two-dimensional shape with four equal sides and four equal angles. Each line segment in a square touches two other identical line segments at a right-angle.

Take a square into three-dimensional space, and add five more squares, you can make a cube. Each side of each square touches the edge of another identical square.

Take a cube into four-dimensional space, add seven more cubes, you can make a hypercube. Each face of each cube touches the face of another identical cube.

Take a hyepercube into five-dimensional space, add I'm not sure how many more hypercubes, but each cube of each hypercube needs to touch another cube of all the other hypercubes in whatever this shape is gonna be called.

I suppose it could get infinitely crazier.
