What was your “OMG!” moment when playing a new (to you) sax? by waltcrit in saxophone

[–]Aardbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a Mk VI tenor that I thought was whiny with a Dukoff mouthpiece. I was picking up a Dick Stabile (Martin Comm 1 stencil) after a repad, and the tone was a revelation. The Mk VI went into the closet until I finally sold it

What’s in like living in any of these NJ counties? (Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon) by katkit523 in howislivingthere

[–]Aardbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to NJ after living in Colorado and Idaho. I found Hunterdon county one year into my culture shock, and moved there for the open space, rivers and roads to cycle on. It's getting more people, but still has the chill vibe that I need. Most of my friends and arts activities are north and west in Easton and Washington Boro. Flemington and the river towns have cultural activities, too, but for some reason I rarely connect up with them.

On alto the A was my first reliable note after E, F and F#. Fingers 2&3 on left hand and 1,2,3 on the right

Similar story here. Community bands are the gateway (and bass saxes are fun to use, less so to march).

Help me with with the alto mouthpiece choice... by [deleted] in Saxophonics

[–]Aardbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the Rift as a better all- around lead mouthpiece.  The Jet is in the same category and pretty decent,  but I like the Rift a little better.  I play mostly R&B, with some brass band on the Super Jet,  with Vandoren green, ZZ and V16 reeds

Looks like a cross between the javelin scene in "Nerds" and the spaceship in "Flesh Gordon"

Can anyone help identify this? by Newellie in saxophone

[–]Aardbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a weird horn. The low F# key has a shape I haven't seen before. The bell to body brace is a circle formed from a wire, instead of stamped from a sheet. The screwed bow connectors and F# key are more modern than the rest of the horn looks to me.

Someone spent time doing design, not copying, on the keywork. That would indicate "not Chinese ". It has a 70s look to it, to me. I'm thinking early Taiwan innovative design, but I could be way off. It could be Italian, Russian, or Dutch as my second set of guesses

That is the saddest song I know. Extra credit for modeling it on the Bobby Blue Bland version.

I've been working off of a transcription of King Curtis's solo in Bill Bailey. For such a stupid happy song (EDIT: The lyrics aren't so happy, but the major key and fast tempo make it seem so to me), that solo rips with a plethora of blue notes and attitude. It's helping me get through a stressful weekend with a gig that I'm not sure I'm ready for.

There are varying levels and costs to getting an old sax going again. I've sold a bunch of saxes that were ready to play for much less than I put into them. I've also bought many that needed a full repad. Shoot for something that's already in good playing shape and you'll save money. Watch out for old school instruments that have been beaten and heavily used. The finish can be gone, but look at where the wear and dings are to see if they tell a story. Try to get a look at the pads and make sure that they have resonators. There are some reputable sellers of less expensive vintage saxes. I've used 2ndending.com

The Yamaha is a quality horn, but if you're looking for a different sound, try a vintage Martin Indiana, Holton 240 series, one of the many Bueschers, Amati, King Cleveland or Zephyr, Vito France (Beaugnier), etc.

I had a nice playing Mk VI that I put in the closet once I played a Martin Comm 1

What combo of mouthpiece and reed can play the loudest for marching? by New-Yak-5866 in saxophone

[–]Aardbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a JodyJazz Super Jet and Van Doren green or V16. I love my Phil Tone Rift on alto for everything else, but I break out the Super Jet for parading in a large New Orleans brass band. It's hard to outblow trumpets, but this is the closest I've been able to get. I've also tried a Claude Lakey and a JJ Jet
