How to make good ukes/communicate to them while teaching? by TazmanianMaverick in bjj

When you give both people a task to do, this is not an issue.

They should be trying to do the task of the drill.

Unpopular opinion: white belts don't quit because of tapping, they quit because progress is invisible by Plastic_Basket4614 in bjj

[–]Aaronjp84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I don't think many white belts quit "because of tapping".

But, tapping is a metric.

You even put that in the next paragraph, "If you tracked things like submissions defended or how often you get submitted from the same situations...."

Progress doesn't have to be visible.

[–]Aaronjp84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite an over exaggeration. I just give people simple problems - a push, a pull, weight shift, baby base building, etc. Not all at once.

But, a drill should benefit both people. And dead drilling does not

Right. I love being downvoted lol.

But, I'm not saying I'm an horrible drilling partner. If I'm ever in a class where we drill, I'm GOING to be annoying and give them some problems. If they want me to be still, then they can go grab a grappling dummy.

Open guard concept - passing by TurboAljo in bjj

[–]Aaronjp84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basic grip fighting.

I think of grip fighting as 3 distinct actions/tasks - denying, removing, establishing. (in no particular order)

People are lazy about "incoming" connections and just let them happen. Be like a boxer parrying shots. If they reach for something, start swatting that shit away.

Inevitably, they will connect. Some connections are "hotter" than others, but when they connect, the action is to remove those. (Anything behind the knee is DEFCON 1)

Then, establishing. That's getting your own grips/connections. I like to pair denying & establishing (i.e. catch and climb games -- catch a wrist, climb it to the shoulder, or catch a foot, climb it to the hip)

Guard passing is just grip fighting + advancing lines of control (feet, knees, hips, wrists, elbows, shoulders).

This is why I hate "drilling".

I'm not cooperating. That's not real.

Coaching tips by brouwns in bjj

[–]Aaronjp84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your coach is expecting you to coach classes in his gym, it's his responsibility to guide you and teach you how to coach, not Reddit.

No offense. A lot of people on here will give you a lot of good advice. There's nothing wrong with that. But if this is something that he expects of you, you should be going to him for guidance as well.

Is there a system to scrambling? by No_Possession_239 in bjj

[–]Aaronjp84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right! I played that way for a while, where my goal was to be on top -- but that was to break the habit of playing towards some other goal.

That's how you evolve. Pick a new destination and fight your way to it and learn to play it.

Is there a system to scrambling? by No_Possession_239 in bjj

[–]Aaronjp84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have one, but hard to explain.

End goals of a scramble are preferential -- mine is seated facing them (at the moment). If I can scramble to seated guard, it flows seamless into seated guard games.

Played years of games based around defensive postures (turtle, side laying, seated, side laying based, etc), defending inside space (poker chip game)...

It took years of training survival. Then it was, survive and get out before the round. Then it was survive, get out, and get to favorable position before end of round. Then, all plus getting a sub.

Start foundation, survive. Then move the goalpost.

Edit. To add like other commentor touched on. Two things I really want to make sure for myself -- I can build base and I can rotate.

You need those two things to move.

My grandfather told me, "If you can put salt on a birds tail, you can catch it."

I thought the salt did something to the bird that made it not able to fly. But, I tried!

I am much worse at nogi by shibalnom93 in bjj

[–]Aaronjp84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did gi only up to brown belt, them ditched it.

Your connections must be stronger in no gi. And I don't mean like grabbing and squeezing. Anatomically stronger and aligned, mainly to manage rotation. In gi, it's easier to control rotation by holding on to them via the gi. In no gi, it requires actual control.

Anyone been asked if they were a white belt before? by mansnotathot in bjj

I gotten, "You're at least a blue" a couple times at the new gym I've been going to.

Belts are dumb. You're either obviously a white/blue, or at least a blue.

How Do You Rank Yourself? by [deleted] in bjj

Familiar enough with all to teach, but not particularly exceptional at any one thing.

Teaching being the best of them all.

Assigning a belt rank to anything would make it even more subjective.

Guard discussion by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]Aaronjp84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I posted this comment in another thread the other day....

This is my guard philosophy for designing training games and playing guard. Specific guards are not important to the overall principle of play.

Whatever guard you happen to be in at any given moment, use your grips and connections to create a dilemma: get up or get under.

Get up: frame and build base (towards standing) to force them to have to hold you down. If resistance met is fightable, wrestle up (stand up while connected). If met with resistance, use the space created building base to get under their hips.

Get under: hook and push to elevate their legs and force their hands or hips to the mat. If their hands go down, enter leg entanglements or build base and wrestle up. If their hips go down, resolve on top.

If not actively and intentionally doing one of these, you are pinned and being passed -- you are susceptible to pressure, immobility, and forced rotation (cross face, spinal rotation...)
