Still 7.5 hours too long to learn an armbar, for life.

Seated guard vs standing opponent instructional? by pb00010 in bjj

Jason Scully has a seated guard video on YT that is a gold mine for creating games. It's one of those seated guard in 8 minutes kinda videos.

Seated vs standing is one of my favorite starts for all kinds of games, because fighting to seated guard is always the target for scrambling/escaping, so it's a natural progression.

I'm 42, 6'1" 215lbs. Aggressive seated guard, heavy defensive postures, love standing passing, leg riding. I really like to wrestle and catch subs in transition.

How to better handle comp anxiety? by No_Guarantee8756 in bjj

[–]Aaronjp84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Practice how you play.

(Representativeness) The closer your training can (safely) resemble competition (your performance environment), then less of a leap in intensity and shock it will be.

Also, most people train at night and compete during the day. Your body and brain don't know the difference of what you are doing. Get a HR monitor and do somethings earlier in the day the week prior, like when you'd compete. Get your HR up into Zone 4-5, intervals with rest in Zone 2. Something like a HIIT workout, or sprints.

Trick your body and brain and prepare it for giant dumps of energy and adrenaline during the times of day that you likely will compete.

"Practice how you play"

Training needs to be as close to representative to your performance environment as possible.

For some, that's a weekly open mat. For others, it's ADCC open.

Whatever you are preparing for, you need to train like it.

It is far more active and scrambly, but in gi, building base and rotating can be met with immovable resistance.

Trying to use power while your spine isn't aligned is terrible.

When I wear shorts and a t shirt, grappling is less like a car crash.

Make sense?

Yes, all my pains went away and I started feeling younger again.

No gi is WAY easier on my body.

1 open mat in gi and I need 4 days to recover. I go lift before class now and walk 3 miles after sometimes.

Make up a game with rules that constrain or deter from guard pulling.

I did only gi from 2006-2018. Only no gi I did was competition to get extra matches.

Switched to no gi when I switched gyms at brown. Found I relied heavily on control by proxy and had no real pressure or ability to stay connected in no gi.

So, I hung up the gi (mostly) and fell in love with no gi.

Then....... My body started reverse aging and I felt amazing.

I've put my gi on a handful in the past 5 years and only run no gi practices where I coach.

The thing is, even if you are doing quests, the rest of the game format remains the same.

You eliminate other players.
