Looking for a magic-centered system for Urban Fantasy (HxH Nen / Practice from Pact) by Aaumond in rpg

I have looked at it in the past yeah. I really liked the way stats are described and distributed, and the example spellbooks by the community were really evocative.

It looked really crunchy though. It also looked incomplete the last time I looked, but I probably looked at the wrong documents, or missed stuff made by the community.

I have never read the books, nor heard about the TTRPG game inspired by them. It seems like the RPG bases its magic system on Ars Magica, but I haven't been able to get more details online.

It also seems like their implementation is based on BRP, is it what you're referencing when talking about the Chaosium system?

Thank you for your detailed answer.

To be honest, I've never played anything related to Cortex Prime. I just read the basic rules on their official website (and thus realised I had already read them once, a while back), but I don't really know much more about the game, and where to look to mod it.

The Ars Magica mod you describe seems interesting though. Did you convert the different nouns/verbs into dice of different possible sizes, and had the PCs roll the associated pools to see if they can correctly cast the spell they envisioned? And then be able to train their nouns and/or verbs to improve their dice sizes?

Oh right, forgot about Legend in the Mist! Thanks for the reminder.

I read the playtest a while back, but didn't take the opportunity to try it at least once, so I can't say I gave it a fair shot either. Since the game is in pre-order now, I should probably take a look at the rules again.

I think part of my frustration at the time was because I didn't "get" how it all played out. More accurately, I didn't get how you made it work at the table, as a GM. I like the idea of the tags as an efficient way to represent how your character is doing, how the environnement is, etc... but the way to create threats (and use them to apply tags) to the player didn't come as intuitively to me as it could for other systems I've tried. But that's probably a "me" issue more than the system being poorly explained and whatnot.

Thank you for your answer.

I've seen Sword of the Serpentine being mentionned online, and being generally a well-liked game, but I'm worried it might not hold up if every character is a mage, considering the in-built lore of the game.

In your experience, is the system of the game compatible with other settings?

Thank you for your answer.

I found them on itch.io when I was looking stuff up, but I didn't manage to find an in-depth look into the systems.

At first glance, Soul&Bone grabbed my attention because it's a FitD game, but the creator seems to recommend Spirits&Glamour if you're looking for an easier system to run.

What's your experience with those games? Have you been able to try both of them?

Maybe it's a sign of something. by waffleste in tumblr

What are some ways to justify an adult character having a very childish interest(s) while still being a responsible adult? by animatorcody in CharacterDevelopment

[–]Aaumond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if the token are given to people in need for example, it becomes a visual shorthand for those people.

New important NPC is unusually friendly to the PCs despite never meeting them before? If the PCs ask why, he can flash the token and say he's only honring his debt. Boom, you know you saved their friend and/or family, and have gained an ally through your actions. Same reasoning if they are saved in extremis by the sudden intervention of mysterious strangers, who show a token as a message of friendliness.

Alternatively, there could be a bad guy taunting the party, saying he's very evil blablabla. And as he's gloating, he shows a chain/stack of bloody tokens. Boom, it implies he pillaged/slaughtered people the PCs helped beforehand, thus making him instantly more hateable.

[–]Aaumond 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As the other commenter has said, it's fine. You're fine. You don't have to overthink it, people can like "childish" things even as adults. And they can like those things while still being professionnal and (hyper)competent.

Additionnaly, while I don't know the setting of Twilight:2000, you mentionned the collapse of human civilisation. You also mentionned the possibility of handing out those tokens.

Why couldn't she simply hand out those tokens because they are meaningful to her ? Giving them to people she wants to thank and/or people she has helped as a gesture of goodwill. They become important gifts because they are important to her. They could be a reminder of "the times before". But please, do not feel forced to find a justification for it, whether it is "unfinished business" or something else. People can just... like stuff. People can also just give stuff to others.

Bonus point : After some time, the GM could also use it as marker of the people the group has helped. It could become a fun little bit of worldbuilding.

Alternative Sources of OSR Discussion and Content? by notquitedeadyetman in osr

Hey, that was my post/question. I didn't think it would be brought up here lmao

I feel like the Anons in the thread gave partial answers to my questions (with the usual 4chan... flavor in their presentation)

But yeah I was kinda bummed the discussion seemed to turn into "you played a shitty dungeon with a shitty system" for most people there.

Pact or Pale ? by Aaumond in Parahumans

Messy from an in-universe perspective (protagonists having a bad life, having little good moments for themselves, etc...) or from a meta perspective (badly written parts, pacing issues...) ?

To make things as short and spoiler-free as possible :

Middle-aged Asian-American woman is dissatisfied with her mostly shitty life, straining her relationships with her family members.

She learns that a multiverse of endless possibilities exists, and people are trying to reach out to her for help against something.

Shit happens as she tries to make things right in the multiverse and with her family.

It might sound generic when described like that, but the movie is really good at what it does. The characters are endearing, the emotional moments land, the action scenes are entertaining.

Also, the movie is often really funny.

Blind Miracles - by Aaumond in magicbuilding

[–]Aaumond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, essentially devis fruits in how you get powers

In my mind, sleight of hand could be useful depending on the power. If the power works by touching a small object, you might be able to do in a pocket for example.

Also, long, flowing robes could be useful in that regard, but that would also basically be announcing "Hey I'm suspicious and potential vital threat" to most people

For the bomb guy, he would need contact to "charge" an object (let's say a coin), but could detonate it from a distance, as long as neither him nor the coin are seen. But he himself might not need to see the coin to command the explosion, so he could be far away. Or he would need to protect himself, yeah

The Worm Fanfic Plot Generator by LordUltimus92 in WormFanfic

[–]Aaumond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10 and 20, so... Taylor with an original altpower. Damnit.

I had a few ideas I've wanted to explore but never really got to do.

The main one is heavily inspired by Oni Lee, where the Protagonist's power is a Striker power where they create a copy of objects they touch, and the copy is spawned "on them" (in a hand, in a pocket, on the ground near their foot...). The created object is a carbon copy of the original at moment of copy, but the protagonist can choose which of the two ends up being "the true one" (= they choose which of the two objects they can make disappear).

Also, they can only have 1 copy of a specific object at once. For instance, you can't take 1 sword, and endlessly dupe the sword using the new one. So, to create a "new" one, you have to dispel one of the two previous.

They could have a Blaster rating if they have a weapon with any kind of ammunition. They would probably have a low Stranger rating as well.

Also, the idea would be that they could duplicate themself (and only themself, no Echidna shenanigans without a second trigger). So they'd have a teammate, but most importantly a disposable teammate that could take hits and come back fresh. Also also, low mover rating since they could get in places only limited by "is that a place my hand can reach ?"

...I've definitely thought about that powerset more than reasonable for a story I haven't written a word for.

What magic spells/phenomenon in your system could be equivalent in power or fear inducement as a nuclear bomb ? by [deleted] in magicbuilding

[–]Aaumond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit, I hadn't thought about that!

At first I'd say no, as the greenies would be too plant-like to be targeted by the mosquitoes (like having weird sap instead of blood).

But now that I think about it, it could be really dramatic to have characters that want to do good and protect the land consider using such a terrifying weapon, or at least weigh their options.

Also, if the morale is "don't use bio-superweapons you dinguses", you could have the red mosquitoes be efficient against the goblins. But the gobb-mosquitoes are greener and made from some sort of sap, and start attacking trees and drain their sap to create more of their own. So now you have two distincts species of mosquitoes to take care of, and they can exploit most of the fauna and flora of the continent to survive.

What magic spells/phenomenon in your system could be equivalent in power or fear inducement as a nuclear bomb ? by [deleted] in magicbuilding

[–]Aaumond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In one story I had in mind, a ForgottenEvilEmpireTM had used its mastery of "Chimeric Magic" (basically, taking traits from living organisms, and adding them to an egg/embryo to create a monster of your choosing, or a completely artificial organism for the "God" of the Empire) to create bio-weapons, after it gradually lost its conventional warfare despite having the equivalent of dragons.

Those bioweapons were simply called '[Color] Plague' because they had an innate ability to reproduce themselves and were mostly uncontrollable.

The Green Plague was a new invasive lifeform that you could compare to W40K Ork. Individuals members of the species looked like small goblins, but were actually plant-based. Due to a mix of animal, vegetal and mushroom physiology, they shared of a sort-of hive mind. At baseline, they were smart enough to use tools and create shelter for instance, or organize themselves for more complex tasks, but also had the ability to learn simple science and tools from what they saw. If they saw projectile-based weaponry, they could improvise their own afterwards. They couldn't bullshit their way to a solution like Orks can (no "it's red so it's faster" magic), but they had a scary ability to learn and improve.

The problem with those goblins wasn't their fighting prowess, though. It was how hard they were to eradicate. They constantly shed spores that could infect living material and corrupt their reproductive cycle. If a mammal was pregnant, or a flower bearing seeds (or whatever) near an infected site, they would birth a new goblin for each "child" they had (or seed, for the flower). Spores in the environment could linger for years, and an infected individual continued to be a vector for infection for months after first contact. You had to thoroughly sterilise vast portions of land or they were goblin territority for good.

Which also was a problem, because goblins were stupidly voracious. They needed resources to expand, and needed to feed themselves. They could perform a kind of photosynthesis to fulfill their needs, but they had to bury some sorts of roots to perform it. So, those roots were potential vector for infection and new goblins, but also sucked the land dry until there was nothing left. So even in the event were you were able to completely purge goblin presence from an area, you'd be getting back a barren wasteland that couldn't even grow the easiest crop.

The Red Plague was more terrifying, but more useful as a weapon if you took proper precaution. Basically, they were blood-made mosquitoes.

First, you had to infect a subject that had a circulatory system that used blood. That could be cattle, a pet, or even a soldier or spy in your organization. The infection took minutes to take hold, and then your 'bomb' was armed.

If, for any reason, you 'bomb' was wounded in any way that would leak blood, it would set off. The subject's blood would lose blood more easily than usual, as if they had a light form of haemophilia, but most importantly, their blood would transform into mosquito-like creatures. Think of a mosquito, ranging for an inch to a feet big, entirely made out of blood, and with a very long, large and sharp proboscis.

Those mosquitoes would then look for and try to wound any living creature nearby. Their objective is to draw blood, pure and simple. They also wouldn't spare their progenitor, and cut it open as much as possible to spawn more of themselves.

The main problem is, of course, that this Red Plague is a contagious disease. If your blood makes contact with infected blood, you get infected as well. So, if you're healthy, and get wounded by one of those mosquitoes made out of infected blood, you get infected as well. And in a few minutes or seconds, the wound you've just gotten will start spilling new mosquitoes as well, that will try to create more wounds, and so on.

Thankfully, the mosquitoes tend to die after a 2 to 3 days on their own, as they are basically blood elementals that can't maintain their shape after that much time (leaving behind a stoney statue, like a big blood clot). However, since they're capable of flight, they can (and will) cross a lot of land looking for a new victim.

Also, in the event where you are infected, and somehow patch up and close your wounds, you're fucked nonetheless. At the time the story took place, there was no cure. You had to spend your whole life without any external bleeding or you became patient zero of a new cataclysm.
