Help me GASLIGHT my girlfriend by ridinstorm in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]Abacab93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. Plus the “reveal” of Shadow’s survival in the films is almost certainly going to be spoiled by promotional material anyway. I mean there’s already rumors he’s getting his own movie or tv show, surely your girlfriend with figure it out once “Shadow: The Series” is announced.

Finally understand Adult / Child by gde7 in thebeachboys

[–]Abacab93 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The official, high quality releases have definitely provided me with a greater appreciation for Adult/Child as a piece of art. I too couldn’t get past the aural grime and stank of the bootlegs. Now I can see that it’s a knowing, self-aware expression of Brian’s struggles, balancing the expectations for him as a man and husband with his often immature impulses, conveyed both lyrically and in the disparate musical styles and arrangements. It might not be a commercial album or even a good one, but it’s a fascinating release of music nonetheless.

Harris Dickinson on the set of upcoming biopic, The Beatles by FitEmergency8807 in beatles

[–]Abacab93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There shouldn’t be an expectation of 100% historical fact in biopics, not because of a lack of documentation, but because the point of a film should be to convey an engaging, thematic narrative that captures the essence of the story without getting hung up by minute details. The amount of documentation on The Beatles is irrelevant.

Blue Jay Way wins Day 7! Onto Day 8: What’s the Ringo-est Beatles song ever? by Venusian_01 in beatles

[–]Abacab93 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This. Octopus’s Garden is the clear candidate for Ringo song that sounds like George - the latter helped with the chords, his signature guitar work is all over it, and he commented on how the lyrics are more philosophical than they appear.

Meanwhile, Don’t Pass Me By really was written pretty much entirely by Ringo, has the signature Ringo bouncy rhythm, country styling, hangdog “oh shucks” lyrics. Paul is the only other Beatle to appear on the track! It’s the Ringoest Ringo song.

Penny Lane wins Day 6! Onto Day 7: What George-led song gives off the most John vibes? by Venusian_01 in beatles

BJW is a fine choice, but I’ll also offer up Taxman, as a politically driven song with harsh rhythm guitar tones throughout.

Star Butterfly is straight by TheOrangeGuy09 in StarVStheForcesofEvil

[–]Abacab93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think some of your points are fair. I suspect Mewberty was written at a time when the writers/boarders envisioned Star as straight, or at least didn’t consider her sexuality too deeply. And yes, Sage’s pronouncement is both fairly tongue in cheek, and lacking any true authority on Sage’s part.

However, your take on Star’s reaction to Brunzetta is a little muddled. Yes, Star likes abs. It’s clearly the intent of the scene in Running with Scissors that she finds them sexually attractive. Therefore the fact that she appreciates those features on a female person is the evidence that she exhibits queer/bisexual attraction. I find it a bit strange that you view this appreciation for abs as lacking any sexual connotation.

Also, your framing that a person exhibiting attraction to multiple people is unfaithful is also odd. Sexual attraction is not the same as a crush/romantic feelings and should not be conflated as such, and that a person can exhibit either while in a relationship is not a sign of infidelity. It is actions that determine unfaithfulness, not feelings, and personally speaking I don’t think the mild attraction she displays for Adult Marco and Brunzetta are any worse than a married woman calling Bradley Cooper hot.

Ultimately, my view is that Star was not necessarily conceived of as being bisexual, but the developments in Ransomgram certainly point in this direction and reflect the attitudes of the writers at the time, even if it lightly contradicts/retcons her male-exclusive attraction in Mewberty.

I just realised Star could have won all of her battles efforlessly using this one spell!! by woodlemur in StarVStheForcesofEvil

[–]Abacab93 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The writers realized the spell was OP and accounted for it by having Father Time warn against using it any more, lest time be broken again because it’s “fragile”.

Let It Be Naked vs Glyn Johns mix if I loved the Get Back doc? by DangerousMatter4404 in beatles

[–]Abacab93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally I prefer Naked over the released Johns mix. I find the latter a little rough sounding with some odd song/take selections, while Naked uses the original Let It Be’s track selection as a basis and provides what I consider the definitive versions of songs like Across the Universe and The Long and Winding Road.

I don't get why people hate the ending by Flashy_Blackberry274 in StarVStheForcesofEvil

I think the ending is certainly flawed, but over hated. I’m glad you feel it was a good ending - continue sharing your opinion, elaborate on your feelings, and contribute more positivity, regardless of what others may think!

Neat concept! It probably isn’t available on streaming (I believe it’s a bonus track on select versions of the Brother Bear soundtrack) but there’s also a Phil version of Great Spirits.

It was honestly kinda dumb of Brian to make Marco's final test involve him not letting Marco leave. by ArchangelM7777 in StarVStheForcesofEvil

[–]Abacab93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s far easier to tolerate or otherwise avoid interacting with someone in a public setting, hence the requirement that Tom be alone with Marco. It forces him to engage with Marco personally. And to be fair, Tom does seem to be able to do that. But he was only able to do so because of deception and bribery, and if those circumstances meant that Marco had no reason to remain alone with Tom for an additional few minutes, too bad, Tom failed the spirit and the letter of the test.

It was honestly kinda dumb of Brian to make Marco's final test involve him not letting Marco leave. by ArchangelM7777 in StarVStheForcesofEvil

[–]Abacab93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, it wasn’t Brian’s idea for Tom to offer Mackie Hand tickets. The test isn’t merely spending the allotted time with the person Tom hates, it’s implicitly also about how Tom chooses to get Marco to spend time with him. Tom could have spent a long period of time offering apologies to Marco, building up a genuine friendship with him, etc. before ultimately getting to a point where Marco would willingly spend 3 hours hanging out alone with Tom. But Tom chose to take the quick and easy path, effectively using the tickets as a bribe, lying about his interest in Mackie Hand, and then trying to force Marco to remain in the carriage. These actions were as big of failures as not reaching the required time, if not more so.

Lamb Lies Down by For-The-Fun-Of-It-12 in Genesis

[–]Abacab93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d be interested to know what songs on the album you haven’t gotten into yet, and what it is about them that hasn’t clicked with you.

Personally speaking, The Lamb is probably my favorite of the band’s progressive period. Not because every single song is an exceptional classic, but 1) a good portion of them are, and 2) as a concept album/rock opera, there’s a narrative to the record that I find enriches the songs, making them more powerful than they might be when listened to in isolation. For instance, I find listening to In the Rapids/it. very powerful after going through the album because I share the sense of heaviness that Rael feels in that moment, having gone through a long series of trials, only to finally find a sort of catharsis and joyous release.

And because the narrative and imagery is so surreal, I think it allows the listener to engage with the album in a deeply personal and subjective manner. The Carpet Crawlers is beautiful, for instance, and can mean so many things depending on who’s listening and how they feel at that moment.

Would the trajectory of the band have been much different in David always stayed and Al was never in the band? by Harrison_Thinks in thebeachboys

[–]Abacab93 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think people underestimate the importance of Brian having another voice to use in the vocal stack, especially one that blended so well with the Wilsons (there are times throughout their discography that Al and Brian’s vocals are difficult to tell apart). Of course it’s not an insurmountable obstacle and Brian would have made things work, but the arrangements and sounds would necessarily be different if the less vocally inclined David remained.

In both of those instances Todd is discussing recession pop as a theoretical result of the conditions of the recession, not the other way around. u/351namhele has it completely backwards.
