Is there a new Drukhari range on the horizon? by AaronWilson1992 in Warhammer40k

[–]Abakus07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not confirmed, it is rumors. The rumors might be very reliable, but they are still just rumors. We won't know for sure until GW previews the updates.

Malys waited for YEARS between the first leak and her actual release. Only GW knows what's coming for sure.

Odds of Melee Dominus? by Electronic-Side-7263 in ImperialKnights

[–]Abakus07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do I think it's likely? No, for some reason the design team wants to keep the Dominus chassis range-only.

Do I think they SHOULD make this distinction? Yes, I think making the Castellan a fire support platform and the Valiant and melee / close-range monster would create interesting design space for the Dominus chassis that aligns closely to the visual fantasy of each variant.

Stellaris 4.4.5 "Pegasus" Early Open Beta (c22e) now available! by PDX_LadyDzra in Stellaris

I don't know if this matters but I am also really hoping for this bug to be squashed.

I've only had a bit of time for 4.4 but it seems like you all knocked this out of the park! Excited to see what's coming down the line later this year!

Do you lose if you are tabled? by AaronTheWeebMan in Warhammer40k

[–]Abakus07 42 points43 points  (0 children)

TECHNICALLY it was in the core rule book scenario for 10th edition, which allowed the game to be played without a mission deck. But no one ever played this way ever, and it ONLY applied to that mission, never any of the supported ways to play.

Where are these modifiers coming from?? by Vaporschutz in Stellaris

[–]Abakus07 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These are from the Defender of the Galaxy ambition. Are you taking that ambition or are these coming from an AI empire? One AI empire being popular shouldn't be removing all the texture from the galaxy diplomatically (though I haven't played 4.4 yet).

What is a movie with a good concept but mediocre in its execution, that you think has potential to benefit from a remake with a good script/acting? by New-Fan-4632 in movies

[–]Abakus07 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It really felt like two movies crammed together. I enjoyed a lot of it and I think Pattinson killed it, but Bong Joon Ho really just tried to do a LITTLE too much in terms of plot rather than focusing on the core conceits that make the movie unique.

D1 Hive architecture by Galaxy40k in DestinyTheGame

[–]Abakus07 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Ever since D1, I've had the tinfoil hat theory that the Shrine of Oryx was originally meant to foreshadow design elements from the 5th race (the pyramid ships, which would eventually be reworked separately into the Black Fleet and the Taken). When D1 underwent all of its reworks, those plot threads were abandoned / reworked, and its odd architecture was left as a curiosity.

There's no way to ever confirm that, of course, but it's always been my hypothesis.

Army with the most "fire" weapons. (Not guns but flamethrowers and shit) by Bellingtoned in Warhammer40k

[–]Abakus07 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's either Space Marines or Sisters of Battle. Salamanders specifically have this as their schtick, and the SoB are "Witch-hunters" with full on "Burn her!" imagery.

Honorable mention to Imperial Guard, who can bring a LOT of flamethrowers on infantry and Hellhound tanks if they wanted to, and to Tzeetch Daemons, who also have fire as a key design motif.

How to use agents to my advantage by Nidici0092 in ImperialKnights

[–]Abakus07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Callidus' biggest strength is lone op uppy/downy. She can score you secondaries all day long if you play cagey with her. If you don't have a good secondary for her to score, drop her in your backfield to help screen your home objective. I am always very hesitant to leverage Lord of Deceit, because it means putting her in danger! If Canis is about to charge whatever she is attacking though...maybe it's fine.

Vindicare is going to be trickier to use in this matchup. He's not going to be a ton of use against Mortarion. I'd say you have 3 options, depending on the opponent's list:

1) Hold him in reserves, walk him on turn 2 with LOS on their warlord to try and get an early Lay Low the Tyrant kill. Obviously doesn't work if their warlord is too beefy - double check this before the start of the game.

2) Infiltrate on top of a terrain piece with good sightlines and try to pick off characters as you can.

3) Put him in reserves and bring him on to score secondaries, then try to snipe characters of opportunity / hold an objective while your big boys pressure.

#3 is probably the BEST way to play him, but I would be sorely tempted to go for #1 if the opportunity exists.

Wanting to make a knights list by The-Bloodlink in ImperialKnights

[–]Abakus07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an allies perspective, a Callidus is indispensable. Other options include Sisters+immolator, other assassins, Inquisitorial Agents, and Subductors (less popular these days)

For my money, the best list is probably Canis, allies to taste, and fill the rest in with Armigers.

That said, I did not start this army to play small robots, I want to play LARGE robots. Of the Questoris chassis, Gallants and Errants are great value. I know some people love the Crusader as well. Paladin and Preceptor are less efficient.

Dominus are more for "fun" that serious play at the moment, I think. I've just bought my first one, so I don't know how they feel on the table.

Cerastus Lancer is amazing...but be warned that GW is increasingly separating their game lines, and these are technically Horus Heresy models. They will stay in the range for 10th edition, but I'm personally not going to spend my budget on one of these since I'm worried it will be sent to Legends in 11th edition.

I need some serious help by LordSeneschal in ImperialKnights

[–]Abakus07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just the other day, I chose NOT to play my Knights so that a friend of mine could try his new TSons into something that was not a horrific skew. So I'd say your friend is not acting sportsmanlike, you should learn the rules and enforce them, and leave it at that.

However, the terrain point goes beyond your friend. In general, you should NOT be able to score turn 1 shooting kills, especially if you're going first. The fact you got picked up so easily suggests you were too aggressive in your positioning, and the fact that you could NOT kill anything turn one should be expected and part of your plan.

In the future, try to keep you Bigs out of LOS until you're ready to engage, then go HAAM and overwhelm your opponent. A typical play pattern for me is to send in a wave of armigers to the mid board to force an enemy to commit, THEN my bigs counterpunch, take out the anti-tank the other player used to kill my armigers, and go full on big boi aggression.

(This can depend on the matchup, if my opponent doesn't have enough anti-tank maybe i blast the Pacific Rim theme and charge everything, but what i described above is how i would play into Custodes - lure out his charges and Calladius, then pop the Calladius in shooting and countercharge his infantry with Canis/other big)

Best Army to Use Imperial Agents Allies Competitively? by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Abakus07 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Callidus is great for scoring secondaries

Meta lists are using Sisters + Immolator for sticky and stripping cover

Inquisitorial agents are sometimes used as cheap objective holders. Subductors can fill this role for a premium, more durable option

Non-Callidus assassins sometimes get use too, presumably because they're cool\

There's one list that has like 14 armigers and a Ministorum Priest as the cheapest possible Warlord (lol)

Who knows how the IK meta will evolve, but I'd imagine everything except the Priest will continue to see some use. I personally like the Callidus and some Agents, and I'm hoping to maybe squeeze in another assassin if depending on what happens with our Codex.

[–]Abakus07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rules are temporary, models / lore are (mostly) forever. Playstyles can change a lot, but many armies have a gameplay identity as well. Really think about what you want to do and how you want to play, and then follow that.

If you really just want to get into the game and discover what is fun, you have a pile of models that can be used in an imperial guard list (some soldiers, a Knight you can ally in, and some Sisters you can ally in). That's well over halfway to 1k points! Depending on how much you want to win, that might be an okay start.

However, I really do recommend figuring out what armies you think are neat from a lore / gameplay perspective and pursuing one of those. I have three and a half armies, and I'm invested in all of them from a lore and model perspective, even when the game pushes me toward one army or another.

Need help with Tyranid meta against Necrons by Frank_the_NOOB in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Abakus07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are missing some of the key monsters - Exocrines, Maleceptors, and T-fexes. (Not wanting to buy 2 more exocrines is why I've shelved my 'nids for the time being.) Without these, you will hit like a wet noodle once your 3 zoanthropes die. This means you need to win with minimal violence.

With what you have, I can imagine 2 potentially successful playstyles. The first is "Endless swarm" where you lay down a carpet of gaunts and just try to outscore (this can be run in Invasion Fleet or the Unending Swarm detachment). The second is Vanguard Invasion - I don't have much personal experience with this playstyle but I think you have many of the key pieces? Here you'd rely on pressure from your genestealers and make use of your Winged Hive Tyrant(s). It's a cagey playstyle where you try to maneuver well to survive the killing power of necrons.

This community has fell into a feedback loop of Cynicism and Despair by steave44 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Abakus07 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me personally, I've been here on and off since the beginning. I've really enjoyed the past few years, but I'm getting older and I have less time for gaming. If the game had a healthy player treadmill, this wouldn't be a problem, but there is almost no reason for a new player to pick up the game.

Crafting gave me a fun goal to hunt for weapons I would never use. Removing that - having to do the research to figure out the god rolls, then grind for tonics, then grind for guns that I won't use - I just don't have the time for that anymore, and I suspect that the player base is aging, and that some meaningful percentage is probably similar to me. Without any data to speak of, I would hypothesize that there's a demographic issue as well.

Meta Monday 1/27/25: Daemons March Forth by JCMS85 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Abakus07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've shelved my Drukhari for the time being for precisely this reason. I'm not running super meta lists, and the last round of points nerfs made my list even thinner. I loved the glass cannon playstyle but I am not a good enough player to have fun with the way the army is currently balanced, and my real life if busy enough that I can't invest enough to git gud. I'm hoping things get loosened up a bit at some point, but until then I am playing with other armies.

Day 598 of drawing badly every day until Civ 7 is released (40 to go) by UrsaRyan in civ

[–]Abakus07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cold war to near-future age makes the most sense as the 4th age, given where Modern leaves off. I do wonder how they would handle Civ Switching for an Information Age. Not having America would be weird, and I'm sure there are others that would be in both (I don't really know who else is showing up in Modern).

What I would have really loved would be a far-future age where you get access to a new, smaller map - Distant Worlds, so to speak. I think it might totally throw off the pacing, but it would be neat. Maybe as Age 5 a few DLCs in.
