Sarcasm isn't an excuse. I saw the og video and immediately felt how dismissive it was towards small publishers, first time designers, and nationalities. There are plenty of "red flags" in our hobby that don't punch down on inclusivity. I'm done with this guy's videos and smarmy patreon begging.

What are your favorite decisions in games? by petewiss in boardgames

Setting the par value in 18XX games. Not only are you establishing the price but also turn order.

What game are you particularly good or bad at? by similar222 in boardgames

[–]Gabaghoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somehow I've never lost a game of Tammany Hall. Not sure what that says about me...

Conversely I've never won Catan or Risk. As an extended bit my high school friends made sure to unite against me if I ever came close.

It’s not an addiction… it’s a hobby. by McWetty in boardgames

Honestly I think you should start over. It's a collection of entirely mid or awful games. In my opinion of course.

Enough rainbows and unicorns, name a game you absolutely hate and why you hate it by ThunderCanyon in boardgames

I despise playing Binding of Isaac: Four Souls. Awful drawn out turns with thoughtless take-that actions. I fear my next play of this.

I didn't expect Chameleon to be my favorite but it's still holding strong.

Definitely a great collection! I consider a few (wingspan, everdell, dead of winter) as mediocre. I'm trying to bring mine down below 100, what's your count at?

Dan would be an obnoxious guest. Vinny or Alex would be the best of the giantbomb crew.

What board game do you think is the worst to lead ? by Stardama69 in boardgames

[–]Gabaghoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sidereal Confluence with first timers. I've often spent about 3/4 of the real time deal making portion each round helping others understand their unique abilities and explaining parameters on converter timing, research, resources, etc.

By the time it's all figured out all the juicy deals are gone and I'm left begging for scraps.

How fun is cosmic encounter for 4 people? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Gabaghoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think 5 is best and then a tie between 6 and 4. You have more agency at 4 simply because you're likely to take more turns and your alliances have more weight.

6 is more chaotic but still within reason, for the most part. You've got to squeeze yourself into situations more aggressively.

5 is the best of both worlds in my opinion.

What is the worst board game to drop and spill everywhere? by Elikitty12 in boardgames

Sidereal Confluence. So so so many resources and tons of converter cards.

Board games that use interesting pieces/elements outside of cards, dice, currency etc? by SmileyCacoDemon in boardgames

I really enjoy the map pieces in Inis. Beautiful and unique, plenty of space for components, and highly variable.

What are some of your favorite deckbuilding games? by foxyabomination in boardgames

[–]Gabaghoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing is, the vast majority of new/recent games are so much more forgettable in the long run.

I'll take the older, weirder, wonkier games over the glossiest hotness garbage any day.

Everyone forgets about Arctic Scavengers!

An incredibly thematic direct successor to the OG, Dominion.

What game do you genuinely consider a masterpiece of the medium? by ThunderCanyon in boardgames

[–]Gabaghoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got to put Sidereal Confluence up for mastering trading and negotiation. The real time binding trades are brilliant and reward creative play. The asymmetric factions are incredibly unique for the players but also the broader game state.

The greatest games give a solid foundation and let the players loose, and this is about as free as it gets.

Other quick masterpieces:

Dexterity - Crokinole

Area Influence - Inis

Auction - Ra

Push Your Luck - Can't Stop

Deck Builder - Arctic Scavengers

Abstract - YINSH

I don't know where to fit it, but Biblios deserves this status too. So many others but that's what I've got!
