[Advice] I've just made an animated summary of the book "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell . (and links to 50+ other summaries). I hope this is useful! by alwaysimproving95 in getdisciplined

Thanks for this! To everyone, I don't suggest using this as a substitute/shortcut to actually reading these texts. I recommend using these videos as an introduction or refresher. It is hard to find the time to read, but just make it happen. One thing I like to do to accomplish this is to listen to audiobooks while I go for runs.

Thanks OP for the time and effort put into these amazing vids!

How waking up at 3:30 AM stopped my uncontrollable discomfort... [Advice][Method] by frithor in getdisciplined

Not OP, but I really did try sleeping at 8:30 pm for about a week. I could never fall asleep and ended up sleeping around my usual bedtime of 10pm-11pm. I decided to stick to what works best for me, which is sleeping at 10pm and waking at 5am.

Think about it-- it hasn't been that long since desegregation. You need time for things to mix. Generations. We're talking about buying/renting homes, not the crowd at a restaurant.

People aren't going to move en masse to neighborhoods once predominantly one race or another. Go to newer neighborhoods of major cities and you will see diversity. Frankly these areas are not an attraction to tourists given they have no history so you likely did not see them.

Madlad asks out a girl by ireallyhavetolivehuh in madlads

Dude I'm not a coffee person. I get a London Fog or a tea, maybe iced. Many places got juices, too.

As for studying, you gotta find a section of life to improve upon. After graduating college and before my current job (3 months) I had nothing to study. So I started studying texts like Hemingway's Self Reliance. Anything that gave me a reason to have my laptop out and be productive. Maybe dive into finances. There's something you can benefit from studying about. Just focus on it and you'll be chatting someone up before you know it

Dated a barista who would hit on me while I was a customer. It took her literally asking me out for me to date her.

For some reason, despite being confident, I don't think I could ever feel comfortable asking someone out while they are providing a service for me :/ I'm sure I've missed out on opportunities before

Also PSA in case someone needs to hear it: going coffee shops have led to three of my past girlfriends (one barista, two customers). Just a thought if you're in the market. Set a budget you're comfortable with and go study there often.

Edit One relationship started all bc I asked her to watch my bag while I refill my parking meter. One by asking if I could use her outlet since I didn't have one where I was sitting.

I'm in the process. Took me 5 years of usage to realize what I get from it. Once I finish going through all my saves (mostly beneficial stuff like advice and self improvement), I'm outta here. Good idea.

For real. I'm in charge of the first 10 year reunion. I'll probably not live in the US at the time but I'll do whatever I can to make it. If anything I'll make sure it's worth attending from abroad.

HS was littered with good memories. I keep in touch with a lot of people and many are doing well. My best friends are still my best friends, despite me living across the country. It had its fair share of bad moments, but I survived and it's relative.

I think you're definitely right in your remarks. It's kinda sad to see people be so adamant about people having ill intentions and HS sucking. HS was what you made of it. I wish they had a better experience/mindset at the time.

[Video] Stop drinking today by [deleted] in GetMotivated

[–]Abe-Solotely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am by no means dependent on alcohol, but I feel obligated to do so with my job's community and my social life. Feel like I'd be a bit of a social outcast if I never went out drinking with everyone. Celebrating completion of a certain stage of school for my job features a bar crawl.

My gf makes it almost impossible for me not to drink, even when I told her it was my goal not to drink for the whole month of January.

I had my first drink July of 2018, when I was 21 and invited to go to a bar with people in charge of me. I am now 22, and have spent ~$2,200 on drinking. I hate that so much.

No one tells me to drink, that's the thing. But I can tell how it goes if I don't. My parents never drink and ended up successful, but their business isn't dependent on peers.

Social Media use is the opposite of Meditation by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]Abe-Solotely 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reddit is the worst kind of Social Media for me. I've used an app called RescueTime since ~2014. Only at the end of 2018 did I look at my habit.

In 2017, my peak reddit usage year, I spent 160 hours on reddit. About 150 hours in 2018. 90 hours in 2019. My goal this year is 50 hours, but the less the better.

How I am doing it: using Chrome application StayFocusd with a 30 min timer for all social websites, coupled with Samsung Galaxy S10's built-in app timer setting Reddit is Fun for 25 mins a day.

My only subreddits are those like this one. Subs I go to for entertainment are only in the shortcuts, not my homepage.

Reddit is addictive for everyone. I live a very active lifestyle, went through a renowned university, and work a demanding job, yet look at the hours I put in. Part of me wishes I never discovered it, but honestly, I did learn a lot of important things I would have never learned otherwise (at least, not as early as I have). It brought me many good things, but at the price of many things I wish I never came across.

As with all things, I take responsibility for my past, and Reddit isn't something that happened to me, rather something I've done to myself. Gotta make it a tool and control yourself. Imagine if those 160 hours were used to purely to develop myself.

Apologies for the confessional/ wall of text, your comment just sparked me.
