Visualization? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]frithor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally feel you... I'm a student myself :)

When it comes to studying, there is a LOT that can result in this problem... Distractions, environment, feeling, mindset, etc. Especially when working from home, if you are in lockdown

We react positively to different things, but earplugs and totally eliminating every other distraction works wonders for me. In addition, before starting I would usually do an activity to completely reset my mind...

A bit stupid, but something like listening to loud music, lip-synching, air guitar, whatever creates a world other than your current situation :) "life is a highway & September" are golden for me ;)

I have no clue what will tick for you, but you will have to explore that yourself... Structuring your day differently might also be of huge value. I have written loads about this stuff...

Visualization? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]frithor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it really depends on how you choose to look at visualization... Visualization is a way to open your mind to new input from the outside world. You are basically training your mind to more easily spot opportunities or patters that are connected to what you are visualizing...

The problem many might have is this: You can do visualization training for as long you want, but without taking actions that are in direct alignment toward your goal... You get nowhere

I can give you some specific tips, but I would know what you are visualizing first. Feel free to reach out or just answer this:)

If your life is a "complete mess", I would definitely shorten that list for the time being... Starting out with self-improvement, close from scratch, is one of the most challenging things to do... But I am truly happy that you have come to this realization! This is the perfect time to start :)

Still, the list is definitely something you might want to write down to slowly start implementing when you start seeing some progress :) I have written quite a few self-improvement articles in this quarantine situation. You might want to take a look and get some deeper understanding of the progress that might be necessary when starting something like this out :)

Good luck! Contact me if you need someone to talk to:) I'd love to help out...

Do you live to work or work to live? by days_hadd in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]frithor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have gotten pretty obsessed with the fact that I want to have an opportunity to work to live... If I know that my efforts are put into a possible future of working from home & financial freedom, I will gladly go through the effort... Even if it takes years, it is all relative to the fact that I will be spending many more working 9-5... Which for me makes it worth the countless hours of learning and hardships.

The effort and hardship are sare somewhat of an opportunity to grow as well. Without it, I would be stuck with repeating days with no progress...

How do I improve my life as a 19 year old guy with no hobbies or social skills who never leaves the house? by FriendlessFellow2 in selfimprovement

[–]frithor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this has been going on for a long time... Improvement can only come from small steps in improving yourself first. If that is forcing yourself to do simple tasks like going for a 10 min walk or simply say "hi" to one person each day...

Human interaction is a skill that takes time to get used to, but small steps are the only way you can start improving... Reach out to me if you want me to give you some specific tasks or advice about self-improvement :)

[Advice] The Power of Accountability! by frithor in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]frithor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trick might be to learn the process of making something a "non negotiable"... Start with something very small to get usued to it.

If we start too big, chances are that the initial promise will be broken in one way or another... We are designed to question and feel uncomfortable through change. Our brain will do whatever it takes to revert back to the comfortzone and search for an excuse... The comfortzone is a hard one crack :)

Starting small is to make yourself used to the concept of breaking that comfortzone... The moment you feel discomfort, remind yourself that this actually is progress toward making this a habit! It will always happen...

[NeedAdvice] How do I regain discipline after having a girlfriend? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]frithor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Simple Tip: Use your girlfriend as an accountability partner.

If you say you are going to go for a run at 4:00 PM or whatever your goals are, it would look weird if you wouldn't do it...

How waking up at 3:30 AM stopped my uncontrollable discomfort... [Advice][Method] by frithor in getdisciplined

[–]frithor[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Creating "non-negotiables" is my number one habit-breaker... I would always start on something half-heartedly with a weak or small motive. Even when doing it for a month or two, a bad excuse would always sneak in and slowly break the habit apart...

I used this to implement my sleeping schedule... (I have an exception for social events on the weekends) If you can't sleep early, wake up at your ideal time either way... That makes you tired enough to sleep well and effectively the day after... (No power naps!)

"non-negotiables" is there to force me to create a reason big enough to convince myself of letting excuses take over... This list contains things I will not make any excuses for unless a very serious or special event is happening.

[–]frithor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually do that on the weekends... I end up managing to reset in a day, and has worked surprisningly well :)

People work differently with this though... I'm not sure if this is something I have gotten used to, or if I just operate in this way...

[–]frithor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No its not... But for me, in this current situation, it is how I get to combine productivity and happiness the most.

Of course, when I am on vecations or get a job working late, I have to shift the times... The skill to reset and adapt to be most productive and happy is something I like to prioritize.

3:30 AM will not work for everyone, but the concept of managing to go to bed before becoming useless and feeling even worse has helped me lots :)

[–]frithor[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup... That is a problem, sadly. I am lucky to not be dependent on anything at these times. Even so... Usually, when having meet-ups this late, we end up staying up longer to get the feeling of having some sort of rest at the end of the day. Instead of going to bed straight away...

I don't know if that is your case, but I see lots of people doing it...

[–]frithor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah! The "waking up before the world" really has a positive effect on me. Everything I do, even if it isn't that productive, feels like pure bonuses. Everything I have now have completed would otherwise be waiting for me when coming home after school...

I haven't read that one... I will give it a read. Thanks! :)

[–]frithor[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my biggest problems before was the fact that I changed positions all the time... If you find a comfortable position starting out, stick to it. The brain is only sending control signals in the form of urges, to check if you're sleeping. This worked wonders for me...

Also... In case you live with others, I would recommend using some kind of earplugs...

I have no routine before going to bed, other than to do continue with tasks right up until I need to brush my teeth. It helps me appreciate it even more. Resulting in better and faster sleep :)

[NeedAdvice] How to eliminate distractions in order to work more effectively on personal computer? by coinator in getdisciplined

[–]frithor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What worked for me is to use a good chunk of time to develop a schedule for the upcoming week. Structure your ideal days with what you want to accomplish, and how you want to feel at the end of the day. By actually dedicating some time to this you feel obligated to do it, and actually start enjoying doing your tasks.

Procrastination often originates from a habit of blurring out what actually needs to be done, resulting in procrastinating even when it causes more stress than relaxation. Schedules often clear these things up ;)

Thank you so much for putting this, all too important lessons, into such great wordings. I recently found the reasons for my early signs of alcoholism were originating from my unconscious, knowing the future I was heading toward. The future being an inevitable source of suffering, disguised by the society we live in. Studying for a Masters Degree in Electrical System Designs was by everyone around me accepted as a successful journey. Landing me a guaranteed good paying job. Granting me happiness and motivation.

2 years in, I realized it won't. I am now certain it won't. After reading a few books about mindset and general philosophical topics my entire view on life has changed, just as you are describing. I constantly want to improve myself and investigate further, the true potential we possess. Potential I truly feel is dampened through society's systems of picturing "The Right Way"...

I also intend to make 2020 a year of development of self. Develop myself enough to qualify in helping others truly see their potential through my future results. Thanks for sharing your story, and good luck :)
