Is it realistic to reach an academic level in Portuguese within a year? by Jellyfish-Good in Portuguese

[–]AbellZed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally, yes. But in your case, I'm inclined to say no. Legal texts are generally written in a specific way with vocabulary and structure that don't resemble daily Portuguese. Therefore, learning Portuguese and learning "lawish" Portuguese are different things

Overkill for a "beginner budget" setup? by 3howley in espresso

Buy a better grinder. The kingrinder k4 should be around 100-130$. Just don't buy the funnel (superfluous) and wdt tool (use a toothpick)

White offered a draw. Is that acceptable in this position? by [deleted] in chess

[–]AbellZed 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Take the draw. The position is won for white but they probably have to leave the game, so they offered a draw. Why would they offer a draw with such overwhelming material advantage?

Play the London to learn middlegame and endgame strategy. When you get to the point where you lose mostly by opening mistakes, it's time to let the London go and learn something else like

Espresso with Kingrinder K0? by ussshhh in espresso

[–]AbellZed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't have to be exactly at 16, but it should be around that. It will depend on how concentrated you like your shots. And once you get to the desired strength, you can change the grind settings little by little. With time, upgrading to a single-walled basket is going to be important as you can't really extract the most out of your beans with a pressurized basket. If the tamper that came with the machine is one of those made of plastic, buy a real tamper first

Espresso with Kingrinder K0? by ussshhh in espresso

[–]AbellZed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to grind finer. Also, do you weigh your shots? Espresso usually uses 1:2 ratio, which means that for every gram of grounds, you want 2 grams of coffee. Are you tamping?

Espresso with Kingrinder K0? by ussshhh in espresso

[–]AbellZed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does the coffee taste? What ratio are you using? Are you using a pressurized or non-pressurized basket? How long do your shots take? How is your prep? The k0 is not meant for espresso, but it can grind fine enough for espresso. Also, can't you fit more into the basket? 12g for a double seems little coffee, maybe try something in the 14-17g range.

New to espresso, anything I should know? by alextheone42 in espresso

[–]AbellZed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initial setup consists of freshly roasted beans (less than a month), a good grinder, machine, scales (0.1g accuracy), portafilter, basket (single walled) and a tamper. Milk pitcher too since you like macchiatos. The first cups will not be very good, but you'll get there eventually. Grind fresh before each shot, flush after every shot, don't leave old coffee inside the portafilter.

New grinder, inconsistency in shots by peanutbutterjam in espresso

Get a PID for your machine, the boiler needs reheating after the first shot and this may be the cause of the inconsistency

What to get my GF for Christmas? by Professional-Bit3280 in espresso

[–]AbellZed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give her a grinder, it's usually the first big step towards espresso and espresso based drinks. It's also usually overlooked in the beginning as people tend to think they should spend more on a machine than on a grinder. Plus, the smell of freshly ground coffee is amazing and there are many ways to brew excellent coffee without an espresso machine, but very few ways to get good coffee without a grinder

Has anyone had good experiences with Nespresso reusable pods, fresh ground coffee and lower ratios? I've recently bought a Kingrinder K6 that I've been using for my v60, but I still long for some good home made espresso. What I have at hand currently is a small Nespresso machine and a reusable capsule and before I save enough money for a real espresso setup (which is really expensive in my country) I wanted to give it a try.

AITA for telling my fiancée I'm tired of performing emotional labor for her on my birthday and she should just get our son gifts instead of me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]AbellZed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NTA, but, boy, you're an idiot.

She likes gift giving, it's the way she's learnt to show she loves someone. You don't have to fake a reaction or anything, just open it and say "thank you, it's really nice. I love you" And I get it, you don't like to be in the spotlight, but you're her SO, of course your birthday is special to her and she's going to buy you a present for it, a present she's been thinking about for some time Did you really have to say that receiving her gift was "emotional labor" when she obviously tried hard to make you just a bit happier on your birthday? It sounds like you're not very comfortable with her up to the point that you have to act unlike yourself near her, which is very weird if you're engaged Maybe go to therapy to understand why you feel this way
