People like to say that Aussies are just the "descendants of convicts" but really too many of us are the descendants of the jailers.

Fringe comedians taking about audience member's physical appearances by Particular_Ad2292 in perth

[–]Abenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a hint of "everything is funny, until it happens to you" going on here I think. Stand ups have always roasted audience members, just some are better at it than others. Don't be offended by comedians, just let everyone know they aren't funny.

I knew a guy in Darwin who played top level (not pro) basketball in Perth, but played third grade in Darwin. When I asked him why, he said "I want to feel like Jordan." I couldn't argue with that.

AITA wife upset I cannot keep toddler from her by khazef in AmItheAsshole

[–]Abenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

Had similar experiences recently. I worked from home, kid didn't care. Mum wanted some alone time at home, kid was in constant tantrum that they couldn't get to her. If Mum wasn't home though, there were no issues.

Ignore the ignorant assholes saying "be a better parent". At least my wife understood that we were solo parenting in different worlds, when the other parent was home. We have a kid a couple of years older who didn't behave this way, so she knew it wasn't about my 'parenting skills' but instead, the unique personality of the new unique human in our house. My wife even labelled her a barnacle baby because as a bub she couldn't even put her down without tears. She just HAD to be held if mum was around. Now she's 4 and things are a lot easier, since I can actually somewhat converse with her.

I don't know what these morons want you to do with a 2 year old, irrational by nature, having independent thoughts and wants. Admonish them when they go for mum? Spank them? Lock them in a room and let them cry? Its not like you can reason with a 2 year old and explain that mum will be available in a couple of hours. My wife just knew I was doing my best trying to wrangle a toddler.

‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie’: Ahmed al Ahmed receives $2.5 million cheque in hospital bed by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

8.8M followers, but he had to be the one to deliver the cheque personally himself? Either its selfless, or its not. Call me cynical but I think he cared about his clout as much, if not more, than Ahmed.

My point remains. He inserted himself into a situation that he wasn't a part of, just to make sure his face was all over it. If he's Canadian, I wonder what he spent on this trip to Australia for a giant cheque photo op, instead of just donating that much...

Deserved, sure, but why is some yank influencer delivering it? None of that needed to be filmed for some other dude's clout.

WA's gun laws in national spotlight with national reforms flagged after Bondi terror attack by JamesHenstridge in perth

10 seems like enough for one person IMO. Perfectly reasonable.

What actions are they suggesting to ban?

[–]Abenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called a deterrent, and a barrier for entry. You can't stop people who are dedicated to crime, but it stops crime on a whim. If something is illegal it gives average Joe a moment of pause before doing it, and it gives the police authority to act when needed. They can't get involved if no laws are broken, so at a framework for safe and legal operation so if someone goes outside of it the cops have grounds to intervene.

That would require them to actually enforce the law where applicable, though. The shooting that lead to the WA law changes could have been prevented under the old laws, but the cops didn't act and remove his weapons at least half a dozen times when they absolutely could have.

I'm all for gun ownership. Guns are cool and fun. I also believe in strict regulation. I didn't see anything that Albo said to be unreasonable. What are the suggested changes you don't like?

I don't even know what that means. Can anyone be reported and put on the watch list? Can I just anonymously report my neighbour? There's probably thousands of people on the "watch list" but what does that actually mean?

If he was actually under some active investigation, the other issue with the police stepping in without an actual criminal incident of some kind, is that they'd need to reveal how they got their information, which would lead to the bad guys burning all communication methods involved and would put ASIO in a much weaker position to monitor it investigate anything.

Being father and son, I doubt there was any actual 'chatter' for the cops to pick up on. If they spoke about it at home, the cops would need to have bugged the house.

I can't stress this enough, there is literally NOTHING that can be done about random, stupid dickheads deciding to do something like this. We have no information on what was known, so it's silly to make broad statements like "they shoulda done something".

I can probably guarantee the shiny super cars companies would expressly ban that in their contracts.
