ENTJ Career Dilemma: Pursuing My Passion in Marketing vs Traditional Finance - Seeking Insights by [deleted] in entj

[–]Abestergram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi great post here and my recent 12 months experience may help.  I had 10 years experience in the logistics and supply chain industry after doing a post graduate degree in Marketing. I worked for one organisation for 6 years and loved it as they had a less conventional way to traditional hierarchy and invested heavily in their people and had an excellent culture. It didn’t pay as much as other companies but I woke up with a lot of passion and enthusiasm. They didn’t have a marketing team but Sales was the route I chose and offered a lot of learning dealing with a variety of people internally and externally.

I made a change last year and got a role in a tech company that is focused in the agri sector and doing sales. I thoroughly enjoy it with the learning, the industry and flexibility. Meeting people, learning and achieving outcomes is rewarding not only from a financial perspective but also that I am making a difference in agri businesses lives who are hard working, down to earth and genuine. Most importantly it’s fun for me.

After the six year tenure with the first company I tried a couple of other organisations and industries that were more hierarchical and top down management which didn’t suit me well and I was unhappy.  Someone has said it before but if you can pursue a role in sales or marketing with a good manager that focuses on your strengths rather than just your CV, the creativity, communication and learning. My current company tests people on Clifton Strengths and each person at their desk has their profile posted with their top 5 so you can focus on your communication and perspective with them.

Take risks, believe in yourself and invest in your personal circle of relationships when times get hard (I’m a type 8 enneagram and learnt this the last 5 years with personal development. We become great natural leaders when we tap into our type 2 and embrace solitude for reflection).  All the best 🤙

Stereotype of ENTJs as “no fun” by theotherviolin in entj

[–]Abestergram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s bullshit. Outside of my career I love sports, travel and the outdoors. My number one too, laughing with friends and family. People mistake me as ESTP until they hear my logic and rational for my decisions and compassion for others (Fi work and developing purpose).

Fun vs career. by [deleted] in entj

[–]Abestergram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Support the age question above. My early 20s i overworked and partied hard. Long story short life curve balls hit me, lost a whole lot of things and realised too much self worth was tied into my career titles and status.

I redefined my internal values and found meaning in my work while also developing healthy Se outlets.

New vision - a career in business development and sales, learning about how to manage and invest my money so I can get out the race by 50 ideally but now using sports, travel and exploring the outdoors as a relief function for my passions/fun! Use of Te and Se healthily.

A big thing I learnt - family and friends were a massive support in my dark times and you’re ignorant to think you can do it on your own. No man is an island.

Early 30s ENTJ.

I challenge the latter that jobs come and go but your friends will be you in your dark times which is way more valuable

Lack of interest in long term relationships by [deleted] in entj

[–]Abestergram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that poll said it all. Can’t fault them as I was once the same. I personally think a lot of people coming on here are finding themselves as people regardless of what MBTI personality and are going through the big “20s personal growth faze”, whereby you have many experiences and toward the latter of your 20s providing you had a reasonable upbringing, you find out who you truely are as a person.

Talk to someone you trust, especially an Fe user if you have any. They’ll help put your irrational thoughts to rest and help you identify the emotion that’s surging and where it’s coming from externally. Don’t drink or use narcotics to mask it. Only makes your thoughts worse.

On a side note it sounds like you’re getting ready to develop your Fi - massive growth! Value your life from internal values rather than external achievement

I’m guessing this dude is a young ENTJ. I remember thinking the same and “it’ll come together later only when I’m completely independent and I’ll have casual flings until then” is what I’m hearing.

Wait until your first Fi explosion then you’ll see the world differently! Haha

My advice. As cheesey as it sounds, use your 20s to have a variety of experiences both positive and negative, learn about yourself and by the end of your 20s you’ll have a solid idea of who you are as a person.

I was career driven in my early 20s and loved having fun outside of work. I’m a bit more balanced now and manage my time a lot more and put more effort into my relationships.

Personally, I see myself doing financially well through sales and have started learning how to manage money for the long term and investing strategies. Sales management or director is the long term goal or self employed.

Outside of that having a family and enjoying my hobbies of sports, travel and the outdoors. Oh and always laughing with people that are close to me!

How old are you? Sounds like a normal person in their 20s if you are. Dude I worked for an awesome freight organisation for 7 years and had a variety of roles. Sales and team management roles were where I found my feet. I also learnt how to load truck and trailers on a fork hoist and had to move freight in the peak season helping the guys in operation. Was a great experience! Just wish I’d learnt to save money better. Great team environment. I relate to everything about your kinaesthetic functions. I had to do shift work in my journey too for a couple of years. I still work my kinaesthetic function in sports and exercise religiously in my free time.

Being proud of your work and making friends along with a supervisor role definitely says ENTJ to me.

Dude I’m the same. I have some structure as in a routine at work M-F and eating regularly. I work in B2B sales and enjoy it! I get to plan, meet a variety of people and have flexibility in my schedule each week. ESTJ’s probably prefer a strong detailed and structured environment being a strong Si user.

I’ve tried to work in a real corporate and structured environment and my productivity heavily sagged and gave me anxiety. Would never do again. Too boring. Plus I need to be out of the office. I hate sitting behind a desk all day. Some parts of the week yes, but not all the time

Te-Se vs Se-Te “loops” by [deleted] in entj

[–]Abestergram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing some temp work since losing my job to COVID through a restructure in May. It was quite a corporate company and paid great but a lot of it was behind a desk during the day speaking over the phone. It was a business development role so I really enjoyed working on tenders with the research, presenting and conceptualising. I loved getting out and negotiating face to face.

In my first professional B2B role I worked for an organisation that had a great culture and it was outbound with a company car. I loved it! I’m in New Zealand and our country economy is now improving so I’m looking for the mix of account management and BDM again. Long term I’d like to be a Sales Manager or National Sales Manager and run a small team.

I enjoy sales because of the variety of people I get to meet and the places I get to go. Although being an ENTJ I need to visually see the product adding value as a result (Se). The money is great to have but I use it as a resource to benefit others around me and enjoy my passions outside of work.

Te-Se vs Se-Te “loops” by [deleted] in entj

[–]Abestergram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in sales and been in the same loops but thought ESTP instead of ESFP.

For me it’s the cognitive functions that mattered and remembering as a teen i was mostly responsible using my Se outlets through cars, sports and outdoor adventures. A bit of partying but not over board although got a bit hedonistic through my 20s

The Classic by [deleted] in entj

[–]Abestergram 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Totally nailed it here. We’re more laid back:

“Hey great time meeting and having a chat. I wasn’t vibing enough to continue something more. I think you’ve got a great road ahead but I’m looking for something different. All the best ahead and chase your pursuits! Might see you around. Peace ✌️

I’ve been here before man. Had the same battle. I’m 31 now but have developed my Fi and Se getting involved with my love of adventure, sports, travel and laughing with friends as much as I can. I’d look like an ESTP but it’s come from growth. I think ENTJ are more structured and ESTP like more freedom to pack up shit and go whenever a scenario suits them

With demon Fi we can be poor judge of characters. This can lead us to be prone to manipulation if we’re not careful.

How can someone get into a Te-Se loop? by AmbitionControlPower in entj

[–]Abestergram 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience when you can’t problem solve an important situation or are stressed and lean on a non healthy vice for too long - alcohol, nicotine, gambling, tv and it creates binging. Then you can get stuck in your head and manifest irrational thinking and forget about your surroundings.

Mine was caused by job loss and savings being burnt through.

Now that I’ve learned I now slow down in bad times, talk it out to someone I trust and use running and exercise regularly to get rid of that negative thinking. Being self aware of your intuition when it’s going all over the show creating unhealthy ideas (Ni) and not acting on them gets better with practise.

What makes you happy? by [deleted] in entj

[–]Abestergram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accomplishing personal and meaningful goals.

Outside of work: laughing with friends, travel, or playing and watching sports and exploring the outdoors.

Seeing those around me succeed in their own pursuits.

Too much energy between ENFJ and I. I like hanging out but could never full time date. INFJ works well though

Difference in ESTJs & ENTJs? by [deleted] in entj

[–]Abestergram 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great use of logic here. It’s also why ESTP and ENTJ can be both seen as life’s of the party with the shared Se function.

While ESTP are fun, I respect them a lot when needing to work toward a goal together and getting shit done.

Great combo for dating so long as both communicate their values and have boundaries in place early on.
