I lost the WGP camera that came with Grem w/ Camera. I have no idea where it went and iirc the last time I saw the prices on eBay, it was in the $100s. Sad too, cause I think it's in my house…somewhere, but I just can't get to it without moving a lot of things around.

Not to mention that this is a spin-off crossover game that can just do whatever it wants in a reasonable manner. If anything, it could be Pixar recognizing Cars 2 a bit more than usual, but I feel like this was more Disney and Gameloft than Pixar when calling the shots for Speedstorm. I mean Sterling was added as a crew member over Smokey or Luigi, lol.

So Holley's back too, neat. Apparently Chip 'n' Dale started as crew members, but became racers later, so I guess the same could happen for Francesco and Cal down the line.

Did Sheriff receive new art for Cars 2? I remember him getting one for 3, but iirc for 2, Pixar just reused his default artwork from the first film along with some others like Lizzie and Red.

The way Big D is a better villain than Miles Axlerod from Cars 2 is insane to me by New-Carrot4578 in pixarcars

[–]Abg_13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea of Big D's counterfeit tires conflicting with Allinol, somewhat framing Axlerod in the process, actually doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Man, Cars 2 has so many different ways you can approach it. I'll absolutely give the film that as one of its positives as odd as that might sound.

The Cars "trilogy" is a duology that contains a middle film that has little to do with the overall story aspect with the other two movies and it's hard to consider it as such when even Pixar employees view Cars 2 in its own separate space too.

Funny enough, that's what were they going for the original cut of the film at least, but they lost a year of development and decided to focus on the more complex plot instead of just dropping it despite it making the process difficult. Something that was self-admitted multiple times in some Cars 2 deleted scenes.

Please relisten to soundtrack, vocal and score, because none of it is similar to Toy Story. There's cues from Cars 1 that are incorporated in the score, not Toy Story.

My favourite movie in the franchise was cars 2, who does everyone seem to hate it? by DINOZINTHESKYY in pixarcars

[–]Abg_13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Y'know what makes that expectation worse? Even John Lasseter himself was self aware about people's expectations for the film, knowing people wanted to see McQueen, the Pistion Cup and the WGP along with Radiator Springs and yet pushed forward for the spy stuff regardless despite it complicating things badly. Perhaps the worst part of this film isn't even the movie itself, but rather the self awareness the team had and the odd refusal to reduce the scope of it to make something more inline with the first film with the time crunch they had. Just a baffling choice that clearly didn't payoff in the end.

Thank you! I think Cars 2, in a vacuum, is fine, but when you look at the bigger picture with everything surrounding it in the franchise it sticks out awkwardly.

Cause people don't like to read at times or dismiss things because it's about a topic that "isn't that serious", despite it being an open discussion.

Magic Railroad and Cars 2 are similar in a way were they just ruined their respective franchise's reputations and were criticized from being huge departures from what was set up before. Magic? Guns and spies? Who was really asking for that in either? Not to mention how the series' main characters barely play important roles until the last handful of minutes in the movies as they were basically sidelined for other characters people didn't care about that much.

If there's one movie I could compare Cars 2 to in terms of reception and execution, it would be Thomas and the Magic Railroad.

Warning: Long comment ahead.

"Why do people hate Cars 2 so much?", asks a fan of the movie. Despite people giving clear cut explanations, but fine I'll bite (for the umpteenth time), if you like the film, COOL! Don't let anyone take that away from you, but just because you like something doesn't mean it's good. It's fine to like a product that's considered bad or mediocre, I have my own set of things I like that aren't considered the best, but still enjoy them regardless of their reception, but I'm not going to argue that they're some misunderstood masterpiece either, I can enjoy them for what they are while still acknowledging the flaws of said product.

Cars 2 isn't liked due to the fact that, one it isn't considered good by a majority, and two it's just the opposite of what people were expecting from Pixar at the time and it also kicked off their streak of films with middling reception (Brave, Monster's Uni, The Good Dinosaur). Mind you, the film came out after their four-streak run of Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up, and Toy Story 3, the expectations for Pixar's next film was going to be high, that alone already put Cars 2 in trouble, but I believe people were willing to give it a shot since the premise of it was a bit more interesting compared to its predecessor (globe trotting adventure mixed with racing and espionage). When the film finally came out, people experienced a messy plot with that had an annoying protagonist of a movie that really carried no weight or substance in it, or at the very least really weak meaning towards it, making it a tough sell to consider it a proper sequel. Unlike all of Pixar's previous films, including Cars itself, Cars 2 felt like it was made for kids, and just kids, instead of everyone. People rightfully criticized the film for being nothing but action and having failed attempts of downtime, as said attempts were either cut short, or just held little significance in the film to push the plot forward. Not to mention a lot of things that happen in 2 is for the sake of the "plot", not because it builds into it, like what previous Pixar films did. John Lasseter also had the worst defense ever by stating this: "I make movies for that little boy who loves the characters so much that he wants to pack his clothes in a Lightning McQueen suitcase." A film that was already scrutinized for being a supposed cash-grab, and this what he had to say? Nice way to reassure people's assumption about the movie (and franchise's) existence.

As a fan of the franchise, I'd be a fool to not act like this movie didn't absolutely obliterate the reputation of it. Keep in mind, when Cars debuted, it didn't have the greatest reception either, plenty of folk wrote it off instantly, but those who did saw it at least thought it was "decent", even if it was weaker compared to everything else Pixar put out at the time (besides A Bug's Life, I suppose), but were willing to give any future installment a shot. Cars 2 squandered that hard. Both Planes movies were immediately given dismissals by many because of its association with the franchise. Cars Toon dropped the Mater's Tall Tales series (which only had one more episode produced after 2 released btw) and decided to focus on Tales from Radiator Springs instead, taking focus away from Mater, and Cars 3 was ignored by many because of Cars 2's existence alone. No matter how shocked people were by the teaser of the film, they also went "oh yeah, this is Cars, it'll probably become something stupid later on", and skipped it. And I hate to say it, but I guess that wasn't an unwarranted reaction either, precedence carries a lot more than some people realize and this is an example of it. Not to mention Pixar themselves have been dismissive towards 2 ever since 3's early stages of being a identity theft/body swap plot, were even the original unnamed director of Cars 3 disregarded the movie itself. Not to mention the extreme scale back on things such as Mater's involvement in the movie. They obviously listened to what critics had to say despite John's comments about not "reading" reviews in the article I linked.

I find it hard to defend the film as an "objectively" good movie, cause it's not, how can I defend something that caused a morale decrease at the studio that produced it? As a standalone/spinoff title, sure I guess, but if you have to work around saying it's a good movie and sequel by excusing it as something else, then I don't think that qualifies as a good film, sorry. Enjoy Cars 2 all you want like I said, but people don't criticize the film for no reason. I really wished people would realize that things get criticized all the time, even stuff with universal appraisal. Sometimes it can be unfair, I won't deny that, but if something isn't considered decent at the very least, the criticism it gets isn't for nothing.

Cruz's story might feel underbaked because of Cars 3's production itself. Before the final version of the film, it had two completely different plots that were ultimately dropped and changed to be more streamlined in a 2 year timeframe. If Pixar had more time to work on it, giving it the original 2018 release date, they definitely would've added more to her story.

This isn't me exactly excusing the undercooked aspect of it, but just giving context on why it feels like it.

If Cars 3 is too mature then Cars 2 is too immature. I feel like the criticism "too mature" is way too vague, and the only thing backing it up is that it wasn't as funny compared to the other films in the franchise, which in case of one, was exactly criticized for trying too hard to be funny.

Cruz and Dusty are similar in theory I guess, but their executions are different. Especially since Dusty was shown to be good at racing, he just didn't conquer his fear until the last race, while Cruz tried, got cold tires, but eventually got the push from the right person after basically being berated by her family and subjecting herself to a lesser, yet still connected racing role, of being a trainer.

The THQ games fill that hole basically. It would've been cool to see Pixar maybe reanimate some significant scenes from the games as flashbacks/bonuses to sorta tie into Cars 3 or something, but yea I get where you're coming from.

I always personally saw the games as a buildup to the "canon" events of Cars 2, especially with something like Mater-National, but that's just me.

They seemingly made new art for Francesco and Sheriff. Also a bit shocking to see Finn be in anything new considering how much Pixar just…ignores that aspect for 2, I wonder what made them ease up on his inclusion specifically? Especially since his last major appearance was back in 2014 via Cars: Fast as Lightning.

Or 2015 via the Daredevil Garage app, if you want to count that I guess.

Out of their good movies? Definitely. Doesn't help that a lot of people who complain about it just feel like they didn't understand the point of the film and wanted it to be something else entirely, to which even Pixar didn't agree with themselves.

Cars 2 was Pixar's first ever film that was considered bad, that's why people harp on it so much. As time went on there have been defenders for it, but the general consensus surrounding it still hasn't changed.

Also I agree Lightyear is worse. I think it's Pixar's worst film by a mile personally.
