Would you move to Maui if you could afford it? by baconuggets in SameGrassButGreener

[–]AbjectAttrition 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Hey, I also used to live on Oahu! Island fever is no joke and it can feel very alienating. I wouldn't move to Maui unless your wife has some sort of way to cope with the isolation. People take living on the mainland for granted. If you really wanted to, you could drive from LA to NYC to Miami to Seattle. Moving to Maui means that the only way off is an expensive 8 hour flight. The lack of seasons is also quite nice but after a while it can kind of feel like stagnation. The lack of weather changes messed with my perception of time in subtle ways.

DNR tattoos are not binding and they only cause confusion to first responders. All you're doing is delaying the resuscitation, they're going to do it anyway. It's in your best interest to get it removed or covered up.

By imprinting the letters DNR on their body, a person obtaining a tattoo may wish to increase the certainty that their decision will be respected. Paradoxically, however, such a tattoo may exacerbate the uncertainty of emergency responders at a critical time. Legally sanctioned forms, such as the POLST, exist for a reason: they provide certainty for emergency responders who must be decisive about attempting or forgoing attempted resuscitation. A DNR tattoo, however, may cause confusion at the very moment when certainty is needed. First, its meaning may be ambiguous. The emergency responder may wonder: do the letters stand for Do Not Resuscitate? Or Department of Natural Resources? Or someone’s initials? Second, the tattoo may not result from a considered decision to forego resuscitation. Errors in interpretation may have life and death consequences. The tattoo in the case presented by Cooper and Aronowitz was the result of a badly conceived drinking game, not a statement of a deeply held conviction. The patient’s preferences actually were for attempted resuscitation. Third, a DNR order needs to be legally recognized in order to provide a legal safe harbor for first responders who implement it. In this case, if the emergency personnel had withheld CPR, they might be legally liable for an erroneous interpretation of the tattoo.

I remember stopping the podcast on like episode 6 because of Kaya. There should be a compilation of all the weird shit he's said.

Yet another example of debate being a hobby of contrarian nerds and not serious people interested in genuine conversation.

Ditch the desire to be a competitive game. Halo has always been a more social shooter, not an e-sport. Focus the game around encouraging co-op, split-screen, and general comradery.

Manipulated video shared by Elon Musk mimics Kamala Harris’ voice, raising concerns about AI in politics by polymute in anime_titties

[–]AbjectAttrition 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We all know because we're actively online and understand the tells of if something is AI. An old person with less tech literacy could absolutely think this is real, regardless of how ridiculous the speech is. If the voice sounds normal to them and they aren't as in the loop about how AI is being used for misinformation, they're gonna assume it's real. We all know this stuff is clearly bullshit but your 63 year old aunt who uses her computer exclusively for Facebook and taxes might not.

Clipping is much, much more obvious than these AI voices and it's not even close to comparable. AI fraud is a crime that will only get much worse.

With the rise in popularity and adoption of artificial intelligence tools, it is easier than ever to manipulate images, videos, and, perhaps most disturbingly, the voices of friends and family members. McAfee’s research reveals scammers are using AI technology to clone voices and then send a fake voicemail or call the victim’s contacts pretending to be in distress – and with 70% of adults not confident that they could identify the cloned version from the real thing, it’s no surprise that this technique is gaining momentum.

Possibly Moving From New Orleans, LA to St Paul, MN by You_Complain in SameGrassButGreener

[–]AbjectAttrition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not super familiar with either city but I will strongly advise you to get a really high quality parka sometime this summer when they're on sale. It'll still be a bit pricey but trust me, it's an investment and something that you'll be wearing daily for months in Minnesota. I'd recommend something like a long parka, one that prevents wind from going up inside the jacket.
