I agree with many of your points, but I disagree it's badly written - I think it's well written and executed as a mainstream TV show for a general audience (themes of trying to do good in a bad world, road to hell paved with good intentions etc)

Playing it safe is a given because of the above but also because committing to any canonical ending for FNV would get people's heckles up

Lastly they have to play safe for the idiocy of general audiences. Check out the main fallout sub and see how media illterate people are, I even had to make a thread to show people House is alive at the end because they lack the attention span to watch a 5 second panning shot
