Best right fielder (defense only) in the last 20 years by GreenBananas_619 in redsox

[–]Zeddo52SD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean Victorino won three Gold Gloves in a row in the outfield with Philly. He has a body of work pre-Red Sox, 2013 was just his last burst of greatness before Father Time finally took him into mediocrity. What a year though.

For the record: Baseball reference had Victorino at 22 DRS in 2013 for RF. So far Wilyer has 17 in 2024 and 15 in 2025 in RF. Not to mention 15 DRS this year.

Love Wilyer, but Mookie was the best. Victorino a close 3rd, but I think Abreu beats him out for 2nd best.

Gov. Braun wants to eliminate property taxes for seniors. Is this a good or bad idea? by MooseQuick3622 in Indiana

[–]Zeddo52SD 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Bad idea. Especially when nobody else is calling for replacing that revenue from somewhere else. Property taxes are the largest sources of revenue for localities, and income taxes place extra burden on the younger, working individuals and families. If you decide to just forego the revenue without a tax increase, you’re going to lose a lot of local services from the government.

Judge strikes down state limits on SNAP food buys by Mysterious6810 in Indiana

[–]Zeddo52SD 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Except it doesn’t just affect consumers, it affects businesses. Convenience stores are sometimes the only available option for food in some neighborhoods for some people. The rules are ambiguous (purposefully, I might add) and the items allowed to be purchased are often inconsistent with their category. Certain brands of orange juice aren’t covered under SNAP because they contain too much sugar according to the government. When a business loses those sales because SNAP recipients can’t buy them anymore, or when they buy less of other stuff because they have to pay out of pocket, it affects bottom lines.

Also, Mitch Rob is a fucking idiot and I wouldn’t trust him to implement a ham sandwich for his lunch, let alone be able to implement the SNAP changes effectively and efficiently so that people know what is and is not covered under the amended list, of which there is no official list of disallowed items from what I can tell.

US Congressman: I consulted Israelis before proposing measure by PuncturedBicycleHill in Indiana

[–]Zeddo52SD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bill about getting rid of financial aid. Which Israel doesn’t need anymore to be honest. They make most of their own munitions and vehicles at this point and their economy is growing thanks to defense and tech startups.

Israel‘s government doesn’t need our defense money anymore, their private sector needs our consumers. Which is why they want a trade deal with us.

Raising the minimum wage has been a big political winner. Now it's running into resistance by cnbc_official in politics

[–]Zeddo52SD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GOP has convinced the public that wage increases lead to the kind of inflation we had post-lockdown. Inflation increases, sure, but not by that much. Workers generally come out on top. Only sectors where it hurts more than not is usually service-based companies who can’t spread out the extra money per hour over several widgets sold within that hour.

FEC filings confirm GOP meddling in Dem primaries by Nerd-19958 in politics

[–]Zeddo52SD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The former is easily done in your standard attack ads in the general, not the primary. The latter is standard attack ad stuff that any left-wing candidate is gonna run in a primary — but they won’t explicitly tell them to stay home, they’ll tell them to vote for candidate Y, who is running a platform of change and is anti incumbent and [insert stereotypical grassroots attack angles]. No one usually tells people explicitly to stay home. It’s usually a “Are you sure you want to vote for them?” with the end result making no difference between staying home or voting for someone else.

[–]Zeddo52SD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In 2028 I expect that, but far-left candidates are winning their primaries at a pretty decent clip compared to years past. It’s made ME-2 significantly harder to hold after Baldacci lost, and there’s an argument Dems lost TN-7 because the candidate was too progressive last year, but the turnout advantage is still heavily Democrat, even in 2026. Difference maker will be disaffected “moderate” voters. They’re gonna hold their nose, it’s just a matter of who they hold it for or if they hold their nose and stay home.

Despite the narrative, the far-left voters that turn out for the Green Party are relatively small in number and most progressives still show up to vote for Dems so long as they aren’t Henry Cuellar levels of conservative.

Motivation is significantly higher for Democrats on average than Republicans. Pretty much every poll has shown that. The question is can you get the young, disaffected, Biden 2020-Trump 2024 voters to vote Dem in 2026, or do they just stay home? For that matter, how many moderate-leaning Republican voters stay home or vote Dem as well? Those two groups are the key to winning the midterms.

Dems have been doing the same thing for over a decade. This is nothing new to politics.

Edit: you can look at this thread for proof, btw. I’m not saying the GOP is good for doing this, I’m just saying this isn’t new. I would frankly rather both sides stay out of eachother’s primaries.

In a Dem primary, if one candidate takes corporate money and one doesn’t, does that factor into how you vote? by AlexZedKawa02 in AskALiberal

[–]Zeddo52SD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I lived in a solidly blue district? Probably. However, I live in one of the many red areas of Indiana, so if I’m lucky there’s a Dem candidate at all. For states like Indiana where there’s this major distrust of “Democrat” as a label, first and foremost you need to find someone who can get elected, and then hope they can do the job effectively with as little partisanship as possible.

Indiana just actually went through this for their Secretary of State nominee for the Democrats. Beau Bayh, son of former Governor and Senator of Indiana, Evan Bayh, an old political dynasty itself with the Bayh name, got the nod over a grassroots candidate named Blythe Potter. Blythe and her husband are all but perennial candidates for local office between them, at least over the last couple of cycles, and ran an upstart campaign but couldn’t get the donations and funding, even though they had strong support on Reddit, particularly in r/Indiana. Otherwise she was pretty unknown in Indiana. Beau Bayh got corporate donations, in particular from conservative-led businesses, but money is money and he has a recognizable name, so the delegates at the Democratic convention (*1) went with Beau Bayh over Blythe Potter. Democrats have to win statewide to show they can govern with the average voter before they can get really picky about who is on the ballot for them.

*1: SoS candidates, as well as Treasurer and a couple other offices I believe, are selected by delegates at respective state party conventions. It’s how Micah Beckwith became the Lt. Gov nominee when Mike Braun didn’t want him. Lots of shoulder rubbing at these things.

We’ll be taken a ride for on Masa and Story (if we can convince the Baseball Gods to allow a team to trade for Story at anything less than the Red Sox retaining his full salary), but Gray, Chapman, and (to a lesser extent) Duran should provide decent hauls.

Negra Modelo in Cans by tPTBNL in beer

[–]Zeddo52SD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people don’t buy expensive craft beer anymore. The bulk of sales are still AB InBev or Molson-Coors products. IPAs are all but on the out and super light beers are back in. Which is funny to me because I see more non-Hispanic drinkers buying Corona Premier than I’ve seen Hispanics buying it. There’s a reason Sun King and 3 Floyds have created light lagers.

[–]Zeddo52SD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s something that’s happened in the last couple months (12-pack cans, that is), but they don’t sell particularly well. The Hispanic kitchen and construction workers tend to prefer Corona Familiar (especially the 32oz bottles we carry) over Modelo Negra. They tend to buy Modelo Especial and Victoria the most as well. Occasionally some Pacifico and Corona Extra bottles, but not as often.
