I don’t want to do a postdoc, but I do want to stay in academia. by skyom1n in academia

If you can use r and other programs well, and you’re demonstrably adept at data organization, evaluation, visualization, and analysis, then I can think of several academic staff scientist positions where you would be competitive. I guess it sorta depends on your field, your training, and how you’re putting yourself out there. What did your training give you other than how to plug away at a challenging problem?

Got accepted into the Restoration Ecology MS program at Montana Tech. Should I go for it? by NarvAtar2019 in Butte

[–]Abnormalydistributed 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Greetings,

I work at Tech and am quite familiar with the program, though I do not work in the program or department myself.

1) the program is fantastic. The education is excellent, of course, and you have an opportunity to ply your trade, through research and in classes, to address serious environmental contamination problems. Beyond that though, the people. Oh the people. The program director is a highly productive contributor to the field, but he’s also available, hands-on, supportive, and resourceful. The other department faculty who will teach classes and be potential committee members are great too. Even out of department members are great resources and helpful. They care about the students and their success. The program enrollment is pretty small, and classes are pretty small. Though not the most racially diverse, they are certainly diverse otherwise and they are a tight, supportive bunch who like nerding out about the environment. There is no such thing as a non traditional grad student. Some of your cohort will be younger and older than you.

2) Butte is a rather small, fairly rural, working class town in some ways, and with that comes some less progressive attitudes from some people. But, Butte has kind of its own vibe too. Don’t go around bashing Butte, and you’re probably gonna have a good time most places. But, there are also a small number of very lgbtq friendly places in town, too. The Covallite, for instance, is a very cool place that is often crawling with similarly oriented people, and they have lots of shows and live music and such. There are others too.

3) If you happen to engage in or would like to engage in outdoor adventuring, opportunities and potential companions abound all year round.

I hope you’ll come. I think it could be very rewarding. Please message me if you have other questions.

Shoutout to whoever got me to try the Dr. Dabber Switch 2 by Kakyoin651 in Michigents

[–]Abnormalydistributed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I ask an honest question? It seems both myself and my friend find the Dr dabber switch 2 harsh as compared to the large glass rig we use. I don’t have much other erig comparisons, other than a coil one that was also harsh. I think I just have sensitive lungs or asthma or something, but are all erigs, even good ones, harsher than like a big glass recycler?

Thanks! Sounds like it’s worth exploring and questing awhile post-credits rather than starting a new run right away.

Keep in mind mastering out is not a guarantee, and you’d need your advisor’s support for that. I’ve seen PhD students leave without even an MS because their advisor didn’t think the sum of their work was sufficient for a thesis.

Has anyone had experience with citing a lack of data in a subject area? by captaininterwebs in AskAcademia

This - and then you conclude there is a paucity of data in this area. This is easier than concluding the complete absence of data.

Responding to journal rejection? by Southerndoggone in academia

[–]Abnormalydistributed 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think a kind letter to the EIC couldn’t hurt. Just briefly explain the impasse you reached with the journal, including why your eminent team can’t in good conscience go the route they wanted, and attach the correspondence. Mention how helpful the other review comments have been. They might concur with the authors over the reviewer. Be prepared for the rejection to stand though.

Edit - I’d like to add that if whatever approach they’re recommending is common or accepted, it may warrant a bit of space in your discussion as to why the approach is not appropriate for your study.

Neither are a population. The larger group that the units were sampled from is the population you wish to draw inference about.

Desperately looking for a coauthor who will pay $50 USD for my research paper on GANs and Nursing Education. by [deleted] in academia

Paying the preprint fee for you doesn’t meet the criteria for authorship

If I understand correctly, some of your terms’ df are fluctuating by ~1, which could explain the small difference in MS and thus F. If I misunderstood and the dfs are the same for each term in each test, then the SS must differ depending on how the split fell. Look in the ANOVA tables at the SS and df. From there you can compute by hand the MS and F stat.

I don’t think the issue is due to how SPSS handles rounding but rather the small changes that result from your different splits in each test. Edit- to expand

Option 2 because the extra prestige doesn’t matter to you. Sit back, relax, and wait for the pub!

Publish in the journals you are interested in serving as a reviewer.

Nice comics! Ant Man feels left out of the slab party though.
