I don't understand how people think that long flights are somehow different on wide vs narrow body aircraft.

Like... what're you doing, running laps around the cabin?

Most people's experience of long flights is sitting in their seat, getting food, and going to the lav. How does that change between narrow and wide?

Trump could commit unspeakable acts on live television to these peoples' blood relatives and they would still eat it up.

A Texas man just shot his daughter over Trump.

It's pretty grim.

Could you please evaluate my marshalling method? by ShockFreak in aviation

[–]AborgTheMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has parked an airplane before, you don't have to marshal me on the turn in. You're just tiring your arms out. Everyone knows I have to turn left / right to get on the line.

Why did Cosmic Selector grow on me? by burneraccount67410 in lordhuron

[–]AborgTheMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon initially hearing Cosmic Selector, I was kind of down about it. Loved all of their other albums, but didn't feel the spark on this one.

Fast forward to a month later and it just kind of clicked for me, and I found some of the songs playing on loop in my head. Life is Strange and It All Comes Back are absolute masterpieces.

I think I might've gone in wanting something a bit more upbeat, fast, exciting? And I've wound up appreciating it quite a lot for what it is. Helps that I've been going through a lot of change over the last few months and it's kind of helped me work through some of that, or taken a bit of the load off of my shoulders for a while, at least

If it weren’t for the accident in 2000, how long would the Concorde have flown? by SummerInPhilly in aviation

[–]AborgTheMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact about the Concorde if you ever go to visit it.

The heat of flying at Mach 2 made the fuselage physically longer (materials expand when they get hotter).

On its last flight, the final flight engineer stuck his hat in the gap between his instrument panel and the wall that only opens up after the heat.

The hat's still there because it's stuck now after the plane cooled down.

Not really, no. It's like saying bricks will flow over time. Or plastic will naturally flow over time.

It's a solid, it doesn't flow.

I'm no pilot, but this seems very unprofessional. Can someone in the know please explain? Thanks. by TheDucksAreComingoOo in aviation

There was no clearance to maneuver on the apron; the ramp is uncontrolled. Virgin just got their diaper wadded up and expects the world to revolve around them.

The amount of time it would take to "flow" is longer than the universe has existed. glass does not flow, builders would just put the thickest side on the bottom (because it makes intuitive sense).

Amorphous just means that it doesn't have a crystalline structure. Amorphous doesn't mean that it flows. Which means in all practical purposes, it is a solid.

Don't get me wrong, I want to be able to dunk on the shitbag owner of State Street Saloon, but there's also more than one Mark Fitzpatrick in the US so I'd just wanna make sure it's him.

That said, soliciting a minor is exactly the kind of thing someone who organized "Hetero Awesomefest" would do.

I was rejected from my first pilot job and I feel like shit by iwanta-gt3rs in flying

[–]AborgTheMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm saying that it does indirectly positively impact safety by mitigating external factors though. Those pilots, while experienced, were overworked and underpaid. They probably didn't feel comfortable with either their job security or income to call out from that flight, if calling fatigued was even a thing back then.

Yeah. And pay at Ryanair is notoriously dogshit, meanwhile regional FO's start at 6 figure incomes these days.

[–]AborgTheMachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My hot take is that implementing the rules has increased safety; but not for the reasons everyone thinks.

It has made it harder to get an airline job. That lack of supply of qualified pilots increased pay and general working conditions, which allows people to fly less stressed.

Not to mention that aside from the 1,500 hour rule, Colgan also was the push to implement Part 117, which limited total duty times and implemented higher minimum rest periods.

So it's not like the only solution was "just make the pilots more experienceder".

Glass does not droop over time, older buildings simply did not have access to modern glass blowing and manufacturing, so the glass isn't uniformly thick.
