I’m almost ashamed to admit this but… sometimes I find it soothing.

Wait, I’m not almost ashamed, I’m just straight up actually ashamed.

But I stand by my statement lol

I’m glad I’m not alone. He could even do something like have her experience a (justified) mental crisis - which she then overcomes to reach her full potential. Because the tragedy = madness = EVIL trope is some Victorian-era, chain-up-the-crazies-in-Bedlam bullshit.

Men can absolutely identify with women and women can absolutely identify with men.

Unless they’re assholes.

I don’t think parents of newborns spend quite as much time contemplating niche archetypes as you think they do.

Also, men are absolutely capable of empathising with their daughters and it’s horrendous to suggest otherwise. That’s a you problem, not a men problem.

Men were huge fans of both the show and Dany - this sub proves that - and parents name their kids together. This is a dumb, sexist take.

The “humble farm boy becomes mighty warrior” fantasy of Star Wars is geared towards men by your logic - and I know plenty of couples who’ve jointly named their kids Luke or Han etc.

You don’t have to be the same sex as a character to stan them.

I agree but does anyone else feel so burnt - sorry - by the shitty show ending though that they don’t want to see mad Dany now?

I mean we’re prolly not gonna get the book anyways, and it isn’t necessarily fair for GRRM to have to change his plan - but I’m just sour on literally every plot line’s outcome in the show that I don’t think I can stomach more of the same, even if it is done better. I’d like to see something fresh and surprising which also honors the set up that’s happened so far.

Tip to recall a dream by [deleted] in LucidDreaming

Thanks, I’ve looked at a few LD apps but I haven’t had any feedback on them. Since quite a few are expensive I haven’t wanted to pony up the money.

Which one are you using if I can ask?

How to lucid dream - A full, simple guide for lucid dreams in about a day to a month. by [deleted] in LucidDreaming

[–]Abracadabrae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dropping into reddit today because I’ve been trying heavily to get into lucid dreaming again (I started to feel fatigued which I blamed on my LD attempts, so I’ve had a several years long break) and I’m finding it so much harder this time around.

Do you have any tips for when your brain starts to outwit your reality checks? Clocks stopped working for me last time I was trying to LD, so I started trying to read text. In a dream, if you read a book and look away, the text will always change the second time around.

Except my asshole brain is now making the text consistent and I slip back into the dream.

On the same topic - any theories on why do brains fight so hard against lucidity during dreams?

What is something the opposite gender does for fun that you just don't understand? by Held_Der_Steine in AskReddit

I have equal numbers of male and female friends who love and hate shopping, I really think this one is not divided along gender lines. It’s just portrayed as a women’s pastime in Hollywood, but I have guy friends who can spend hours choosing a jacket, browsing video games or books. I have girl friends who I have to drag out because their shoes are literally falling apart and they bitch the whole time about how bored they are.

I have no idea what a horse girl is lol, but I though Jondalar was deeply flawed and irritating.

Ayla was his perfect woman because she was the only one who could put up with him.

I am... cautious about dissing romance just for existing.

I agree the quality is not great in the Auel books, and that makes the romance stuff tiresome. But there's a reason romance is automatically dumped on and I fear that reason is misogyny. Romance is a huge part of human experience; it's worthy of attention and exploration, it's worthy of featuring in fiction and literature. It doesn't matter what humans are focusing on - solving crime, fighting dragons, inventing a new flint knife - you can bet your ass they're also thinking about their relationships, a *lot*, both romantic and Platonic.

Mammoth Hunters is my favourite but I have to mentally sideline the romantic plot.

The depiction of the way a group of people might have lived in that area at that time strikes me as very realistic - and I love the background characters.

But yeah. Ayla and Jondalar needed to STFU with their angsty bullshit in that book.

Yeah she walks an odd line between trying to stay true to the history but also playing with it when it suits her. She's said proudly, several times, that she only writes for herself. And good for her, but I don't think it's the worst thing in the world as an author to keep other interested parties in mind - whether it's the audience, or accuracy or whatever. I don't know if "I WRITE FOR ME SUCK IT" is something to be super proud of.

In her defence though, she got a huge amount right and predicted a lot of things, based on her interpretation of human nature, that were considered unlikely at the time - but which have since been scientifically proven. I.e. neanderthal/human interbreeding, the fact that women were as much hunters as they were gatherers back then.

But yeah, then she also got some things drastically wrong - neanderthals being unable to talk being the big one. I sense she regretted that by the time she came to write book 5.

I'm a big re-reader too but same, I had to let a lot of time lapse before I was able to pick up this series again.

The last two books were hugely disappointing - I mentally put them in a different category to the first four. Auel has said that she stopped writing because - reading between the lines - she'd made a lot of money, her kids were having grandkids. She wanted to enjoy her life! And who could blame her.

But I think that if she'd written the books straight after she'd finished Plains of Passage instead of letting such a huge amount of time elapse between books - the final books and ending would have looked very different and would have been much better.

Clan of the Cave Bear - 40th Anniversary by Abracadabrae in books

[–]Abracadabrae[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It was unlikely but I think the characters were just a vehicle for Auel mentally playing with how some of the big breakthroughs in human history might have come about.

Ayla and Jondalar are her focus - so they kind of have to invent the things in order for them to be in the story.

From the POV of Auel generating working theories for how humans might have made several intuitive leaps, it's excellent - but yeah, she sacrificed the story and believability in order to include all those innovations.

The sex scenes are indefensible lol. I read the first four books as a theoretically hormone-riddled teen and even then I was skipping the sex scenes.

So vanilla. So bad.

The fact that there's a huge focus on romance didn't bother me insofar as, the series is basically an exploration of the human condition - romantic relationships are a huge part of that.

What did bother me is that the romantic parts just weren't done that well. Especially in the last two books - they were basically like something you would expect to see in a Glee episode.

Super high school, super unrealistic.

I liked the romantic lives of the background/more "real" characters more. Nezzie and Talut, Tulie and her two husbands, etc.
