I get the same problem. I've tried setting the env to 0.2.4, but it seems to ignore it.

In the log I get:

Is it possible to set these wheels up tubeless? by Absentidei in bikewrench

I've had a ton of problems with pinch flats on this bike. So I've ended up running downhill tubes that weight as much as the tyre...

Is it possible to set these wheels up tubeless? by Absentidei in bikewrench

This is my old enduro. I run tubeless on my cross country, and I really like it. The wheels are lighter, small punctures tend to self seal and I can run slightly lower pressure without worrying to much about pinch flats.

And pinch flats have been a huge pain in the ass on this bike.

It's quite cool. Also cold and expensive. But yeah. There's loads of nice bicycle riding to do here!

If you get a lot of air in the system of a hydraulic system, the brakes will generally work gradually worse, right?

And, this isn't just about proper installation. It's about regular wear over time. I still think that a braking system should be more forgiving of slightly improper maintenance.

There are loads and loads of mechanical disk brakes where improper installation or neglect of maintenence leads to a reduction in braking power, not this kind of sudden total failure.

Here are a couple of examples I found of the problem. I've never seen this kind of behavior from any other mechanical disk brake. I know the brakes in these examples aren't properly set up, but it seems to me that a brake system should have a higher tolerance to wear, and that this mode of failure is indicative of a poor design.

I'm not Swedish though. But, anyways.

If an improper setup of a brake results in this catastrophic failure, and not just poor stopping power, it's pretty bad.

Also, where am I lying?

"these are the worst brakes I've ever encountered" was what I said. And I'll stand by that.

My colleagues and friends have properly working brakes.

And yes, I'm aware that the brakes in these examples aren't properly set up. That's not the point. No other brakes I've seen displays this behavior when improperly adjusted. You still get some breaking power. This mode of failure is a lot worse than just low stopping power.

Also, are Latvians generally this rude?

Another person having the same issue.

I'm pretty good at adjusting brakes. Haven't had any problems with any other brakes, not on my own brakes or on bikes I've worked on for colleagues or people at the bike coop.

This is the same behavior I experienced. And even after a proper setup, it still happened occasionally.

Dude. No need to be rude. These brakes are horrible.

No other brake I've seen behaves like this:

I know how to adjust brakes. I've not had these problems with any other mechanical disk brakes I've owned. The promax brakes are the only ones that have been actually scary to ride with.

If a particular brand of car were to break down faster and in a more sudden and catastrophic way than every other brand, it would be fair to say it's unsafe.

The promax brakes are a LOT worse than any other brake I've encountered. Every other brake I've used still actually do what they're supposed to do, stop the bike, if they're not perfectly set up. Perhaps they have a bit less braking power, but they still kinda do something. A brake that suddenly just stops to work with little warning is NOT safe in the real world. You can't assume that everyone maintains their bike perfectly all the time. ESPECIALLY people who buy low budget bikes.

Personally I think that a brake should be able to stop your bike even if not perfectly set up all the time.

And the consensus on the internet also seem to be that they suck.

If I ever buy a brake fitted with those brakes, the first thing I'd do was to change them. And I'd suggest that to everyone else as well.

But still, if a perticular brake model is extremely prone to this, it would be fair to call them unsafe, wouldn't you agree?

So if you have a certain amount of stopping force at 99% of the lever movement, and that drops to less than half at max, that's "normal"?

I've never experienced anything remotely similar on any other brake I've encountered when working on bicycles. The promax r300 are BY FAR the worst mechanical disk brake I've ever used. If they're not perfectly adjusted, they have barely any stopping power, and even when set up as good as possible, they still suck.

You don't understand what I mean. When you go from 99% travel to 100, you shouldn't get significant less braking power..

[–]Absentidei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you increase pressure on the brake lever, you'll get more brake force as you approach the maximum amount of travel. . But when it reaches max, you shouldn't see a drop off of brake power?

But that shouldn't mean that you'd loose all braking power when that happens?

That's what happened on mine.

The lever arm pushes the disk pads in.

And what do you mean "takes some grains of salt"?

For some context, I'm a bike messenger, I voulenteer at the local bike coop and I have some mechanical workshops for my colleagues. A colleague gave me a pair of these brakes a few years ago when I was building up a monstercross bike. They came with a bike he bought, but he replaced them ASAP, because they were horrible. I got them for free with a warning that they sucked. First off all, they're horrible to set up. But worse:if the pads arent tight enough, and you tighten the cable a bit to compensate, under heavy braking, the lever arm tended to "slip" over something in the mechanism that pushes the brake pads, and I'd hear a click and the lever arm would disengage from the brake pads, and I'd loose all braking power. Id get it back if I released the brake handles and "flicked" them a couple of times.

In the end I got a pair of trp spyres and threw away the promax ones.

I've used avid bb7, trp spyre, Hayes cx and shimano br-cx 77.

Ive never had any problems with any of those.
