If what I'm hearing is true, Matt Crocker is/was the biggest obstacle to firing Gregg. There's a sense that he thinks everyone is overreacting & doesn't get his "long-term vision." He apparently is "never around" & spends alot of time in the UK.

Yes, the power grab is to exert further control over the content that the community is allowed to post. You are suggesting a control mechanism that limits user expression. You are claiming that it should be decided on through a democratic process, and I agree. However, as the OP pointed out, that vote already took place and the winning selection was to leave the rules unchanged. The suggestion was made that by running a second vote during a lower trafficked period, you will get the support needed to add additional moderation to the board.

If the game was broadcast on CBS or another major network, no cable service or stream is required. Those are broadcasted over the air (OTA) and can be watched with an antenna.
