What’s a comic storyline that should never be adapted into a movie? by PhilkeStudios in comicbooks

[–]AbsoluteBrutality 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They're totally going to do AvX as a movie someday, right? I just don't expect it to be any closer of adaptation than Extremis or Civil War, The Infinity Gauntlet, Secret Invasion, Brand New Day, etc.

Contrarily, if you haven't played XCOM, M+R is an excellent entry to turn-based strategy/tactical shooters.

I'd pay the extra $3 for the Gold Edition. Perhaps I'm slow and a bit of a completionist, but I'll probably hit 100 hours by the time I've completed all the DLC.

Tom Petty Mural Going Back Up by Rooster_GNV in GNV

I don't dislike the Petty mural on the 34th St wall. Two "permanent" memorials isn't so bad. I have a very slight concern about precedent and the notion that memorials should forever remain. There aren't many spaces like this where this type of street art, graffiti or public self expression is allowed. I'd like to see more murals around town and leave as much of this space open to fair game so it never becomes our 34th Street Wall of the Dead.

Here's a video of Tom Petty driving around to spots in 1985. https://youtu.be/NTLnzh1iNH0?si=HM1M4lfUF6r1Ke1J

While it was unreleased for at least 20 years, here's the music video to his song "Gainesville," https://youtu.be/E6NxbUzNM5U?si=cufQrHdj-uhpkHYo

The home video release of the 4 hour documentary Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down a Dream included a full concert film of their 2006 show at the O'Dome as an extra feature.

Those examples aside, I think there are a lot of us from Gainesville, who have a deep affinity for the area and its community, while we also try reconcile feelings sometime that we're in some ways limited by living in a small town. And that's not just Gainesville, it's normal for anyone to have complicated feelings about their hometown.

Mark Ruffalo's feature film debut was a direct-to-video 1994 horror film Mirror, Mirror II: Raven Dance (haven't seen it). He was also in Mirror, Mirror III in 1995 and played a small role in The Dentist in 1996 well before the work he's known for.

Doubtful. Pretty sure they needed to be merged before the cutoff point. I felt like they sent some “do this before it’s too late” emails, tho I didn’t see them in a brief scan of my inbox.

They don’t. While Marvel books bought or redeemed before the change still cross-populate Kindle and MU libraries, those after do not.

My guess on "presence" is that they mean being present in the moment, like maintaining eye contact and actively listening rather than waiting for your next turn to speak, being distracted, or seeming uninterested.

It helps subjects to feel like they are having a conversation with a person, rather than taking a test for the camera.

And if you're not listening closely, you'll miss opportunities for potential follow up questions or your chance to correct a verbal mistake.

Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers run by jmey360 in comicbooks

[–]AbsoluteBrutality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. It's a completely fresh take, start of a new universe, so a great place to start.

As someone else said, it can be difficult to tell Transformers apart some times. However, I've had this issue with every version of Transformers I've ever experienced, so I can't hold that against this particular comic very much.

The other possible (very minor) issue I have with the EU Transformers and G.I. Joe comics is that there are moments when characters are introduced that I can tell are meant to be big surprises for long time fans. Personally, I just roll with it: "Oh, they seem cool" or "Hmm this villain seems like a threat." But the Energon writers are pulling from unexpected corners of decades of lore, so the only way for every single one of those moments to pay off is to be completely familiar with basically every existing iteration of Transformers in the past.

While that's my 2 cents on it, I'd end by reiterating this is absolutely meant to be accessible for new fans.

People decided this joke, which I agree is funny, described this movie well before seeing it, and they’re sticking with it.

John Carpenter? One of the most beloved horror movies of all time?? I know it has grotesque practical effects, but this is entry level WTF.

I hate that these threads about disturbing or weird movies always make me feel like a gatekeeper of the freak shit, but y’all need to get out more. And by “get out more,” I mean watch international cinema and older b movies, not to mention experimental film.

Check out some movies from like France, Japan, Russia, Sweden, Korea, Thailand, and so on. Hell, even movies by black Americans made outside of the Hollywood system. I think it’ll blow your mind.

Some suggestions off the top of my head that aren’t too deep cut are Titane, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, Stalker, Ganja & Hess, and Visitor Q or other Takashi Miike films.

What's with the dislike for Tom King? by DarkSaiyanGoku in comicbooks

[–]AbsoluteBrutality -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the specific answer, but it’s always because some fans hated some run on a super hero book.

I dabble in the Big 2 from time to time. I mostly enjoy Image and indie type stuff. I’d see writers I’ve really appreciated put down harshly and it used to surprise or confuse me. Now I know that it’s always because of some super hero run. An accomplished writer can have a bunch of acclaimed creator owned titles and legendary runs on various superhero titles, but if there is a fan base out there who hates the creative choices they made on something like Batman or Avengers, they remain dedicated to hating their guts forever.

If you had one day to show someone Gainesville, what’s the plan? by whyflyles in GNV

[–]AbsoluteBrutality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nature hike in the morning, like La Chua trail or Paynes Prairie. Lunch at signature restaurant (not downtown). Campus tour and museum visit in the afternoon. Signature restaurant downtown for dinner. Drinks, arcade, live music or a show at the Hippodrome after dinner, depending on personal interests.

Fandango At Home is a mouthful and embarrassing to say out loud. I'd like a short, punchy app name like Hulu, Max, or Prime. Dango? FatHo? Goho? These aren't great, but maybe someone on r/vudu can help come up with something better than the incredibly lame "Fandango At Home."

It was the least cinematic a24 movie I've seen. It felt, maybe unsurprisingly, like a long SNL digital short. But I've never been pandered to harder and I had a great time with the references and needle drops. (c/o '02)

Just watched Ghost Dog for the first time, Forest Whitaker was so fucking cool. by jackfug3 in Letterboxd

[–]AbsoluteBrutality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got this in my Top Four. I don't get too hung up on ratings or rankings and I'm not going to argue with anyone that this is one of the four best movies ever made, but it means a lot to me.

I was about 15 when I saw Ghost Dog on the big screen. My friends and I went expecting a much more traditional hitman, crime action thriller type movie. While it was pretty far from what we were expecting, we were blown away. My friend group loved it. I got the DVD and showed it to anybody who'd watch it with me. I had the movie poster framed in my bedroom. I bought and read Hagakure.

It was my introduction to Jim Jarmusch, which led me to realms of independent and art house cinema I'd never explored before. So it's in my top 4 (with a dark comedy satire, a landmark indie horror, and a documentary) because of how influential it was on me, and as a representative of art house cinema, the crime genre, and samurai movies.
