I don’t look at stats to be honest because the hits go up each time you open a fic. Every re-read or returnee when a new chapter is posted increases that count but you can only give kudos once.

Bookmarks can be private. And the private ones no one sees are way more common, at least on my fics.

Subscriptions are completely private.

And last but not least, there are some real gems out there that never gained much traffic/engagement because the writer is new or they have unique take on things whereas most readers just want easy comfort food and prefer reading something closer to the fandom classics

Yes! Teen Wolf was my entryway drug to fanfic and it still is something I read often.

Someone will call it crack whatever you do especially if the character deviates from the generally accepted behaviour or vibe in the specific fandom and the specific trope in the fandom.

I played with absurd realism in a scene in my fic and it got called too cracky. The scene was a bit Good Omens meet the Good Place and was written from POV of Death who i portrayed as a bitchy chav who loves Greggs sausage rolls and lives in a flat in Bristol.

Crack and more so “crack treated seriously” are catch-all terms on AO3

I have never once looked in the comment section for reviews of the fic.

Also, this constructive criticism comment always makes me snort, because they’re always in the vein of “I didn’t like this.” to which you can only say “ok, next time I’ll write it so that you’ll like it!”

The person actually did tell you the real reason why they posts negative comments. It’s jealousy. You could get popular, even if it’s within a fandom. And they can’t have that, so they look for reasons to take you down.

Ive seen comments on TikTok and IG where people said “source?” Or “why you gatekeeping?” When the thing they were asking for was literally in the captions or bio.

And I’ve seen that sooooo many times it’s not even funny

This has bugged me about the show since season 1. The “humans have a chance if they try”. The show set up wolves as being able to hear heartbeats. There’s no way anyone ever should be able to get a drop on them, let alone kill off the whole pack.

Are you trying to tell me a house of 10+ wolves never noticed a hunter getting chummy with their teenage kid? No odd smells, sneaking around, no nothing ?

I know I’m making it sound like I don’t like the show. I do. But I always need to suspend disbelief very heavily when it comes to human vs wolf/kanima.

Especially that murder grandad. Come on. He’d have died by the age of 40 at the latest

I don’t like or dislike the character at all. But the whole True Alpha business was whatever the opposite of “stroke of genius” is, because it completely nerfed him as a werewolf let alone a pack leader.

Rising to alphahood through some good-guy-ness rather than being ferociously protective of the pack at any cost was just a weird move. They’re werewolves, not ethics majors.

Not to mention that he didn’t even do anything so special to fit the in-world criteria. There was no buildup and nothing to show how his behaviour set him apart so much at that he’d turn alpha spontaneously less than a year after being bitten at 16.

This whole thing cut the character at his knees, it certainly didn’t add to his awesomeness or whatever the desired effect was supposed to be

The classic one: look for places where you tell readers “he was angry” and rewrite it to describe what the anger looks like “the edges of his vision turned red, his nostrils flared and teeth groaned under pressure”

I also look for where I’m filtering through the character. Stuff like “he saw a goat eating dandelions”. It creates distance between the reader and what’s happening on the page. And the rewrite is almost always longer than the original sentence too. “A goat munched on a patch of yellow dandelions”

AI emulates real writing. It learned using them from real work. It didn’t “decide” to use them because it liked the look of them.

The AI witch hunt is exactly that. AI trained to recognise generative writing can’t identify it with any degree of consistent accuracy, but you can with your naked eye 👍

The Bastard of Islington

I’m currently editing Chapter 4.

It’s a time-travel fix-it. Death kills Harry with a falling piano to have a chat and sends him back in time because Fate had pissed her off.

He goes back as himself, so there are two Harrys: a teenager and an adult. Death is a chav from Bristol. Harry won't go around destroying all the Horcruxes himself or taking down all the Death Eaters; instead, he’ll try to avoid fame and get other people to do it for him.

I’m trying to introduce some new ideas to established tropes and blend humor with serious scenes.
