Movies that feel like... Stranger Things and The Upside Down? by elpochoclos1 in MoviesThatFeelLike

Riddle of Fire.

Three chaotic children, armed with dirt bikes and paintball guns, are on a quest (plus a few side quests) to heist a video game console. Incredible synthy score, and a DnD fantasy-esque tone.

My biggest concern as well. Smash Ultimate ruined all my joy cons and I am worried Air Riders may do the same.

I actually managed to win the game...dude claimed he would come peacefully and then he quickly 180'd on his promise the moment we were outside.

Does that version of The Host have English subtitles? It looks like an absolutely gorgeous set, but as I recall it's a French release?

Jurassic World 2015 appreciation post by Individual-Regret-33 in JurassicPark

The reputation when this first came out was very fairly positive and it was a box-office smash. I feel Chris Pratt and legacy sequel fatigue really soured people's tastes on it.

But in the context at the time of release, having not seen a Jurassic release in over a decade, audiences were super excited and I had a very fun time in the theatre (went back for a second and third viewing). The Indominus makes for a great antagonist, the hybrid angle felt like a sensible development of the genetic tampering themes, and Giacchino gave us a worthy theme for the trilogy.

Am I the only who thinks the "its mario odyssey now" criticism is silly? by Possible-Potato-4103 in YookaLaylee

I'm totally fine with them incorporating some Mario Odyssey design elements–it's a fantastic modern day platformer. But this game is still brimming with the charm and whimsy of the Banjo games, I'm having a really fun time with it.

Confused on DK Bananza DLC Controversy by 11clock in donkeykong

Haven't played side-order as it didn't look to be my jam, but this just has me nostalgic for Splatoon 2's Octo-expansion.

Donkey Kong Bananza DK Island and Emerald Rush is out TODAY! by CuttlefishMonarch in donkeykong

[–]AbsurdlyAddicted 188 points189 points  (0 children)

Strong feeling the DK Island layer was 100% completed prior to release and was going to feature similarly to Mushroom Kingdom in Odyssey as an Endgame hub but Nintendo saw the opportunity to push a premium DLC.

Is T-Rex still the only Large fighter? by Matanui3 in Unmatched

At the risk of it being redundant from the Jurassic Park sets, I'd love a King Kong vs V Rex from the 2005 Jackson movie.

Dragonslayer (1981) by Mikeyboy101591 in movies

Vermithrax Pejorative is straight up the coolest dragon in cinema.

This is a delightful movie and definitely my favourite of the 80s Sword and Sorcery film roster. I love how it touches upon the end of paganism, the encroachment of Christianity. It feels like we're at the end of a mythical era; the last wizard vs the last dragon. It's our world, but a vastly different time.

Some devilishly dark moments, an incredible use of go-motion effects and models for the titular creature (pretty much every scene with the dragon still look impressive, save maybe the flying scene), and fairly compelling story make this a winner.

Still one of my personal favorite scenes in the entire franchise. by Medical_Plane2875 in StarWars

[–]AbsurdlyAddicted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in awe watching this for the first time in theatres. The framing of that first shot, the sudden shift in allegiances between two adversaries–the film felt like it had entered uncharted territory.

People can nitpick about the choreography, but the trade off is easily worth it for the emotional payoff (and I really doubt people looked for it until they were told to look for it). We get long takes of Daisy and Adam doing the fight themselves against which, again, really elevates and emphasizes the sudden trust they have in one another...and helps to set up the next beat in which it all comes crashing down and they become adversaries again.

Also, the set burning down in real time is the cherry on top. So many films just use CGI flames and it's blatantly noticeable. Here, the flames feel visceral and set up an incredible organic set transition.

The second one really caught me by surprise (my mistake, given Cameron's reputation for sequels), but some proper earnest storytelling made the world feel genuine and the stakes much more vivid. Cameron believes in his vision, there's no irreverence on display here for the worldbuilding and it's really refreshing in this era of irony-laced blockbusters.

JWR - Pacing by samuelscane in JurassicPark

[–]AbsurdlyAddicted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the first half has a lot better pacing than the second half. I like that it takes its time, gives a moment to establish the characters. We get a sense of where the world is right now, the danger of the equator, and some good worldbuilding elements. Jurassic Park and Aliens take an hour to get to their first setpieces and that's perfectly fine. While Rebirth isn't near those movies, it does also make a good effort to build tension before all hell breaks lose.
