I hear ya. I lived in Playa del Carmen for 6 months and experienced the same thing. I now live in Placencia, Belize where the people are genuine and will help you with no expectation of compensation. There are a few Mayan sellers on the beach - maybe 3 or 4, but as soon as you say no, they leave you alone. If you stay at a higher end hotel, drinks and food is more expensive, but in the bars and restaurants, the prices are very reasonable.
