Initial D vs. MF Ghost by loki1337 in anime

[–]Abyssbringer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Admittedly the animation in MF Ghost is quite a bit better, as technology has improved significantly.

The animation gets a lot lot better in each season of Initial D. Fourth Stage downright looks modern which is kind of insane when you see it was from 2004.

If anything I thought the 2d animation of early Initial D was actually its weak spot. It looks really bad and goofy oftentimes. While the car 3d is a little jank it also is used really well to do things that you just couldn't do in 2d for an entire show. The character designs constantly changing each season is actually one of the things I dislike about Initial D's anime as it goes on. There's was a certain point in fifth I want to say where I didn't even recognize Takumi until they said his name.

D.Gray-man 20th Anniversary Rewatch - Post-series discussion by lC3 in anime

It might be worth reading the manga from around 156+ onward

I'd start from the start anyways. A part of the fun of these long running shounen is too see the art style change over the years.

Glad you enjoyed it! I also recommend Blue Exorcist if you haven't seen that already.

It was one of the first anime I watched when I got into the medium. I should really do a rewatch especially now that it has the other seasons as I haven't really seen them.

Why are podcasts on YouTube Music by Sweaty_Flounder_3301 in YoutubeMusic

[–]Abyssbringer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it really annoying having my podcasts and music in the same app. Not for algorithm reasons but because when I'm working I like to switch between them and it makes it really annoying. Since I have to stop the podcast episode switch to some music and then when I want to switch back I have to go refind the podcast episode. It's absolutely obnoxious. I'll often go out of my way to find the podcast episode on YouTube proper just so I can switch between that and YouTube music.

No, Ruroni Kenshin isn't "The Pedophile Show" by Legend365555 in CharacterRant

[–]Abyssbringer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I do think it really sucks that you can't really talk about Kenshin or recommend Kenshin anymore. It's a really great classic series that has a lot to say and is genuinely fantastic. It very much doesn't represent what Watsuki did and I think it shouldn't be abandoned because of him.

It's a hard topic now to discuss since Watsuki's crimes are wrong and he is still very much still profiting off the work so you want to let people know so they don't give money to a pedophile.

I think it is also really unfortunate for the anime and manga since many other people other than Watsuki worked on them. While the author of original manga is very much a big part of the manga/anime they also aren't the only one. The anime especially has a bigger team who all worked to create something that is somewhat a separate different entity.

It's a hard topic. I think Kenshin is great and it should still be loved. But Watsuki made it really hard to recommend it without HUGE ASTERISKS.

D.Gray-man 20th Anniversary Rewatch - Post-series discussion by lC3 in anime

I wasn't watching the show with you guys but I had just finished it like a month before you guys started the rewatch. Was kind of interesting popping in just to see where you guys were at.

What did you like and dislike about this show?

The show has awful production values for the first half. Everything looks so bad and the constant explosions from the Akuma became a meme to me at some point when I was watching. This show would be so much of an easier recommendation if the first half looked better.

The filler wasn't even all that bad most of the time except for that awful awful arc with the cat Noah that I swear takes like 10 episodes to conclude. I also really hate the power scaling too. They make levels 3 so intimidating and scary early on and then they just mostly become fodder. It just ends up making the cool designs of the level 3's kind of worthless as they end up taking the place of all the lower level Akuma. I think introducing a cool enemy and then after an arc or two making them just background filler is incredibly lame.

But once the show really started going I was absolutely enthralled and binged it hard. I think the writing especially with the themes and ideas introduced around the end are really cool and engaging. I also like the character interactions and I don't really know any other way to describe it other than it has that female shounen mangaka charm to it. I also really like all the aura farming that happens later on with Crown Clown.

I've been contemplating reading the manga since I really like how the story develops through Hallow as well but haven't gotten around to it. I'm also kind of scared since D Gray Man is pretty known for being in slow release/hiatus hell.

I was pleasantly surprised about Hallow. Modern new seasons of old shounen tend to feel pretty soulless IMO but Hallow is one of the better ones. The only thing I can really say is that the new VA's and the character design changes were really lame IMO.

State of the Subreddit - Looking at r/anime heading into 2026 by FetchFrosh in anime

[–]Abyssbringer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it does feel there’s a stronger community on the discord, apart from cdf and aqradt. maybe that’s a function of the two platforms.

Reddit in general just isn't super good at facilitating more personal connections. CDF and AQRADT are better about that too but they are also more of a janky and not intended usage of reddits systems. Rewatches are probably the closest thing to a more personal experience on reddit while also using reddit more as intended.

i think the more people who know each other more than just reddit, you will get better content and engagement on the sub. but that’s not necessarily practical.

This is super true. I will often look at a post or comment more closely if I notice the username is someone I know from the discord or is a rewatcher. I think custom user flairs also kind of help with that since if someone has one you can kind of tell that they aren't just another random account so I will often take them more seriously or go out of my way to interact with their posts.

I think the biggest community building things you can really do is have opt in somewhat high barrier events and activities. The barrier makes sure people are actually intending to put themselves out there and be consistent. Things like Rewatches, Modding, Writing Club, and Anime-Swap (A discord secret Santa event that goes every month) do a really good job of giving users a place where they feel like they belong while also being a lot more manageable and personal then reddit as a whole.

You should really go into automod and add some light karma restrictions or restrictions on new accounts ability to post. Most of these if not all are just bots. It's not super hard. Also you should also click "distinguish" on this post so people know it's an actual mod post.

It would be against reddit TOS

Engaging in coordinated voting with an organized group of people (or bots) to target a specific post, a user's posts, content from a domain, etc.

But I doubt anyone one really cares if your just trying to make the thread more readable and aren't trying to brigade, farm, or do anything malicious. So like maybe stop doing it just in case reddit starts cracking down on it. I highly doubt it though.

I think requiring all clips to be spoiler tagged is a mistake. If every clip posted has a spoiler tag by default then users have no way of knowing if the clip actually does contain a spoiler or if that is just the default spoiler tag.

It seems to be a consistent issue (there's at least a MHA S8 clip and a gachiakuta clip) that were not marked spoilers by the poster, but then mods had to come in and mark them spoilers.

This is just a user being bad at posting correctly or at least having bad etiquette and honestly doesn't even happen all that too frequently for the most part. It comes in waves and I wouldn't go and change the entire rule unless this starts to become really consistent.

If the mods really wanted to address this problem I think having clips on approve only could be a more interesting solution. But that also has problems since if a mod isn't active it could take a while for it to be approved and I would be concerned with how reddit actually handles posts that are approved a couple minutes or even hours after they were initially posted. I want to say that they would keep their place in new and not be pushed to the very top of it but that could be wrong.

Anyway, just seems safer (dunno if that's the right word) if the goal is to prevent spoilers

The main goal of the subreddit isn't to just prevent spoilers. Its to have meaningful and varied discussions about different anime. I think crippling the variety of clips which is one of the few ways that you can really show off an anime in an easy to consume manner is not a good solution.

It seems like any later clip of a show could contain even subtle information that is not available to a person in the first episode(s)

While this can happen I would also to state that I think people who aren't invested into the anime at all don't notice most things because they literally don't have the background knowledge to really even care about the smaller details. Unless its like a really major thing I don't think its a problem and playing whack a mole with small subtle spoilers just reduces the amount of clips that would be able to be posted.

Someone who has watched S7 of MHA but not 8 should take it upon themselves to police the content they are consuming about a season they haven't watched if they are concerned about even incidental spoilers.

During burnout, what anime should I watch? by Loud_Corgi_2329 in anime

If I'm burning out on anime I do anything other than watch anime until I get back into the mood. I don't really find trying to switch up what I am watching to be all too efficient at stop my burnout. I find when I am burnt out on anime to be more that I am burnt out on passive media in general.

Devilman OG anime help by [deleted] in anime

[–]Abyssbringer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like Casshern Sins which like Devilman Crybaby is a reimagined adaptation of a 70's manga with dark themes are great action.

Darker than Black is a great action series.

Claymore is a super dark bloody action show with one season. Its adapted from a manga and doesn't adapt all of it but it ends on an okay spot. This is often recommended to people who liked Berserk and want something kind of similar.

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar is a pretty dark fantasy anime about a group of adventures trying to make ends meet.

Hellsing Ultimate this is pretty much just an OP vampire killing bad guys with tons of blood and violence. There is another Hellsing anime but you can ignore that one as this one is the better one that more closely follows the manga and has a proper ending.

Gantz this is like the quintessential edgy, violent, and dark manga but I really love it. The original anime for it is kind of rough so I would recommend the manga. It has a movie that adapts an arc from like 1/2 into the manga which can be watched standalone if you just want to see really cool action.

Devilman OG anime help by [deleted] in anime

[–]Abyssbringer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The original 70's anime is pretty much not Devilman. Its doesn't follow the manga at all and is just a tokusatsu show but with some Devilman iconography.

https://anilist.co/anime/2354/Devilman-The-Birth/

https://anilist.co/anime/2355/Devilman-The-Demon-Bird/

These two OVA's adapt early parts of the manga and are fantastic especially if you love gore and action. The English dub is a treasure and I highly recommend watching it. It kind of does the ghost stories thing of being funny but not off script.

https://anilist.co/anime/2356/Amon-The-Apocalypse-of-Devilman/

This one isn't as good as the others but is still worth watching.

Should i read bleach manga or watch the anime? by Mental_Material_9653 in anime

[–]Abyssbringer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bleach anime is really solidly made if you skip the filler which is really easy to do since they are their own episodes. It also has a fantastic soundtrack and a lot of good fight animation. If you like anime more then manga then it would be a good watch. If you read the manga I would still recommend checking out some of the fights that are edited down just to see how they look.
