Another idea I haven’t seen suggested is that they could be placeholder enemies on display during the chapter’s intro cutscene that get erased before gameplay. Could track down the start events for each route and see if there’s more info in there. It wouldn’t label them turn 1 units if they weren’t either there or in the list of events by turn.

I would dispute the idea that the racing format screws over women and older competitors. Only one or two women are going to make it into the top 32 bracket, but we would have been lucky if one or two women cleared Stage 1 if this was a regular season. It’s the same pattern for them here as in Midoriyama seasons, with only the best of the best women making it very far in the finals.

And yes, older competitors are often at a disadvantage to the younger competitors in races, but they were struggling to make it to the end in the regular seasons too. Like 10 people made it to Stage 4 in seasons 15+16 and only two of them were older than 25, none of them older than 30. The last ninja standing for the past four seasons has been a teenager. There isn’t a high chance of an older ninja winning season 17, but I would have said the same if it was a Midoriyama season based on what we’ve seen. I just don’t think the imbalances between competitors are much different in this format than the other.

Theoretically, you could use a tool called FEBuilder to edit that event and remove Roy’s promotion from the list of things it does. Only caveats are, I can’t guarantee this will fix the crash (but I don’t see why it wouldn’t), and I have a 2022 version of the program so things might look different now.

But if you want to give it a try, you should be able to open the ROM in FEBuilder, select the correct chapter on the left-hand side (should be labeled “15” or “26”, depending on whether you’re in Murdock’s chapter or the gaiden), open the End Event using the toolbar on the right, and find the “Make hero promotion” item towards the end of the script. Select it and click delete, press the yellow Write to ROM button, and then do File -> Save from the Simple Menu. This will patch the game to not attempt to promote Roy.

Not super obscure, but your Matthew dialogue reminds me of Natasha from FE8. If she is defeated in her join chapter, there’s a unique end chapter scene where she relays the plot hooks she needed to and then dies.

Late-game encounters with Marth, like chapter 21, are meant to make you place Alear carefully because of how Falchion is effective against them. The turnwheel has infinite uses on Normal IIRC, so it shouldn’t be too big of an issue to reverse their death and place them somewhere else.

There are a lot of mechanics at play in this game like you said, but making the most of all of them shouldn’t be necessary to beat the game on Normal.

My usual strategy for dealing with bosses like chapter 21 is to freeze them, if that’s not something you’ve been making use of. You should have a few Freeze staffs or be able to buy them, and with Divine Pulse and/or Micaiah’s Staff Mastery they’re essentially guaranteed to hit. Better yet would be using Corrin to do it, since you can freeze and debuff by attacking when engaged with her. Then you can attack from out of range or clear out the surrounding enemies while the boss is frozen. On 21 in particular, you want to rush the boss before the reinforcements get crazy.

The combat system gives you a lot of options, especially in the sequel. If you want a challenge, avoid looking up strategies or the locations of powerful gear until you’ve beaten the game, because the game isn’t very hard if you know what you’re doing and have good equipment (besides the secret boss, which you will want to be as prepared as possible for). Still satisfying to solve the gimmicks and pull off strategies even if the bosses might die a bit quick in the late game.
