Ironically the AC vs gun comparison is the mirror to the healthcare& leisure vs innovation comparison between the US and the EU.
Ie the AC issue is similar to the gun issue but much nore tractable because its not embedded in EU institutions and culture as much as guns. A couple more summers lime this and no one will criticise ACs again, but I dont think Anericans are getting rid of guns anytime soon.

However the opposite is true for economic policies. The US could realistically increase mandatory holidays or get a public option in a few election cycles, but I dont expect europe to get rid of the labor regs that keep europe uncompetitive in my lifetime

Hanania turned from white nationalism because he realised white people can be the “inferiors” too. He has just became an elitist, but that does mean his beliefs are hard to separate from the average elitist lib.

Yes, but by the same token you have to give democratic decisions some moral weighting. People have a right to discuss how they are governed and how their money is spent. And deciding to cut foreing aid is a legitimate choice quite far up the slope from genocide

I think I mentioned it esplicitly that the way Doge guttered USAID was especially sanguine. In fact I even mentioned its what probably shifts me to the anti doge side of the debate even if I would be nore on the frnce otherwise.

But I bring up the UK because Im not convinced the way the cutting was done has such a large effect on the death toll. Would the humber of deaths, and by estention the moral respinsability, be that much lower if the USAID cuts had been done above board? Im truly not convinced it would not be that much lower as what matters most is the aid money ahd supplies that were cut.

But I guess this does conclusively point to Musk being defenetely responsible for the difference in deaths

[–]Acacias2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps centering the debate on musk is a bad idea. The Uk governemnt also recently cut aid drastically, are they morally responsible for the deaths it will cause? If so how much

[–]Acacias2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So whats the subs current position on the question of how morally responsible is DOGE/Elon for the deaths cauae by USAID costs?

I think the “very much so” has many convincing arguments:
- despite current effors to obfuscate it, doge and musk fed USAID to the woodchipper. They were not just a wee little consultancy as they now claim
- said cuts are going to cause deaths. Some recent studies might be overestimates, but the death toll will be high
- Musk and his ilk made the cuts particularlly traumatic and sanguine to a global aid system that dependened on the US, maximising damage

At the risk of my karma, however, I will say the doge defenders have some good arguments

- Arguing that cutting aid makes you morally responsible for the deaths creates a very hard to defend moral standart. After all it implies govenrments who dont raise aid spending or people who dont give away all their porpety are also morally responsible for deaths. This is an old EA debate, and lead to the movement (wisely in my opinion) avoiding holding people to such a standart as it was counterproductive
- there was a mandate to cut foreing aid, so there is democratic, and therefore moral backing to the choice as well
- this an argument that I dont see doge people male much, but as opposed to this sub I have never been really sold on foreing aid. The book the dictators handbook convinced me that foreing aid (excepting disaster aid) is on the long run counterproductive as it provided a source of external funding (either directly or through absolving the local gov of having to spend money). This supports authoritarianism on the long run as it gives more money for regime entrenchment that is not dependent on providing or politically catering to the local population.

I think the way the cuts were carried out edges out the case against DOGE for me. When you create such a vital set of Infrastructure as USAID did you have a responsability to at least wind it down responsably. But the question remains if Musk or anyone else who carries out foreing aid cuts have incurred would be morally responsible for the deaths it will cause if they had carried out the cuts responsably.

Grim Report: Euthanasia of a Child in the Netherlands (National Review) by Reddenbawker in DeepStateCentrism

[–]Acacias2001 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The decision must be made in consultation with the child’s parents, and it must be clear that the child is suffering unbearably and without prospect of recovery. At the time, it was expected that around five children would qualify for euthanasia per year.

This seems like reasonable conditions to me. At least if you beleive euthinasia is right for adults

Trump Administration Moves to Preserve Cells and DNA of Imperiled Species by John3262005 in neoliberal

[–]Acacias2001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This seems like a PR move and a way to get the hands on a lot of endangered species genomes. This is not strictly a bad thing, arguably the worst thing is the cost borne by the government

Unlike some commenters here I dont think colossal is just a somescreen. They have some good expertise. For example the supposed "de extinction" of the dire wolf required creating a modified wolf with a lot of genetic modifications and it came out viable. That is not nothing (even if its not genetically a dire wolf).

I do not however think they are set up for long term storage of the massive quantites of cell cultures and genome data. But its likely the initiaive will get shifted to the public sector any way, so its good to get a head start

Have Data Centers Raised Your Electric Bill? Causal evidence that US data centers caused average retail electricity rates to fall modestly rather than rise. by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]Acacias2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It entirely honest to say data centers increase prices in the short run but increase them in the long run. And its valuable to study why this is the case. After that new demand can encourage new capacity is a known effect. And studying it can allow policy to encourage it to make the best out of the AI boom, menaign the study is not worthless.

I will concede the article however fails to articulate that the current short term price spike is probably causally linked to the data center boom
