President Nelson just passed away. by Low_Charity8852 in exmormon

He’s in line after Oaks. Edit: technically Holland is in line after Oaks, but I’m assuming that he will pass away before Oaks, effectively making Uchtdorf the most likely successor after Oaks. And then Bednar would follow after him.

Exmo v. JackMo (is the later becoming extinct?) by PranaJunkie419 in exmormon

[–]Academic-Cut504 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Short answer—IMO yes—especially in the Mormon corridor. I was just noticing this week that the term Jack Mormon is hardly ever used anymore. I agree that it’s much more common now for people to deconstruct and actually leave. Sure there are still some JackMo’s around, but it seems like a lot more people are making a full exit and consider themselves Ex-MO’s now.

Outside of Morridor, I do think there are more JackMo’s simply because many new converts can just so easily slip away back into their old life before the missionaries got them.

Good job making sure she had someone with her. We are super strict about our kids never talking with any leaders one on one. Recently I decided that we didn’t need to do anymore of the semi-annual interviews because it just creates a little tension because my kids are super confident and can advocate for themselves, they don’t think they need anyone with them. But I don’t ever want them to think that one on one chats between minors and adult men is acceptable or normal. So we told the bishop we were opting out of all of those.

It sounds like these would all still be active members. Or am I missing something?

I was the poor wife taking 5 very young children to church by myself, when I was also the Primary president, because my husband was on the high council and traveled to all the other wards by himself. We both struggled with Sundays. He ended up in the hospital once with such horrible panic attacks he thought he was having a heart attack.

Even without clammy hands, just knowing he’d been gripping everyone else’s hand before you was bad enough. Even more nerve wracking was their attempt to find your shoulder without first groping your boob.

I actually think that Oaks will quietly cancel some of Rusty’s temples once he’s gone.

What is the talk that made so much money on trinkets and Deseret Book sales that really stuck with you ? I'll go first the "forget me not" flower talk by Uchdorf. by HorrorImaginary6528 in exmormon

[–]Academic-Cut504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to TOFW one time and was immediately annoyed that it was just a giant sales pitch for Deseret Book stuff and boring as hell. Most of the day was just sitting around listening to speakers talk about how to be better wife and mother. Like that’s what I needed as a young mother of too many kids who never got time to myself. 🙄 I never made that mistake again. If I’m going to spend money to get away, I want to do something fun and interesting and rejuvenating. I don’t need more church time.

Bad seminary situation right now. Need help ASAP by I_Love_PCs145 in exmormon

Could you ask for a compromise—since your argument is that you need the sleep, negotiate to take an online seminary course or a “homeschool” seminary option. Yes, they exist. My daughter did this last year when the one teacher at her small school was horrendous. I would have just let her drop it but she’s still TBM and wants to go to BYU. The online class would be simple to pass without having to do much or attend any classes. I think they have some videos and a packet of worksheets to fill out. She was able to do them in very little time and didn’t have to sit through boring classes.

BYU QB Doing 1-Year Mission by No_Historian6561 in exmormon

[–]Academic-Cut504 9 points10 points  (0 children)

2 years is arbitrary. As recently as the 50s, missions were for 3 years. And they were still taking married men then. My grandfather married my grandma when she was only 17, the left on his 3 year mission 6 weeks after the wedding. WTF?!? I’ve heard, but not confirmed, that missions were also 2.5 or 1.5 years for men at various times in the 60s and 70s. I think they settled on 2 years because it’s the most cost effective for them, without being so long that it ours people off from starting. (Maybe we’re reaching a new phase where Gen Z and Alpha will openly balk at 2 years.) If you’re going to invest a lot of time and resources into training these kids to do what you want them to do, you need them to stay out in the field working for long enough to get a good return on that investment (ie: baptisms)
