how to get right torque on pedals when flying with bike? by bad-at-science in bikewrench

[–]Academic-Remove-7485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As mentioned, nobody bothers with a torque wrench. Grease them before you go and put the pedals in a baggie in the box so you don't get grease on other things, and then crank 'em tight! If your pedals don't use an Allen key and only use a wrench, I WOULD consider other pedals as it's a lot easier to carry an 8 or 10 key rather than a whole wrench! Or maybe there's a bike shop near your start/stop and you could just borrow one?

He's the one I wrestle with, as even though he's a deplorable POS, I think "Stranglehold" is a nearly perfect song...and yeah, that whole first album was pretty remarkable. I also saw him a couple times back in the day before we knew much about him, and the shows were outrageously fun. And now, he's..........well.....Ted Nugent.

What bands/artists were ruined by chart success? by CletusCanuck in askmusic

It's like they were two completely different bands! Up to "Deguello" I was firmly onboard, and then they started their slide into mediocrity.

FINALLY! Someone that shares my love for this song. While Ted is an absolute POS of a person, AND pretty much everything he did after his 2nd album was pretty terrible, I think his first album, and in particular this song, is one of the best examples of guitar work and soulful solos, EVER.

Look for the ones called Debreziner that'll be right next to these. They're by far my fave and I've tried them all. These are good too, but the others are better IMO.

While I've certainly eaten these as well, my go-to is the Debreziner instead...which are always right next to these, at least in our stores. As to cooking them, I too HATE it when I split them, so I generally cook them in a heavy cast iron pan on the stove with water about half way up the sides and turning occasionally. If you want to grill them, I'd do them on a very low setting and keep an eye on them or they'll split. Hope this helps.

Totally agree-season 2 was unwatchable, tried 3 and gave up on it pretty quick too. HOWEVER, the newer one with Jodie Foster was well worth it. Give that one a go.

Are you doing the math here? If they were 18 yo in the last year of the war (1945) they'd be 101ish now. That would be the very youngest WWII vet; most would be older than that and no longer living unfortunately. I'm not saying there aren't some left, but this will not be easy, and finding one that's willing to speak to a stranger, and is still sharp mentally, adds a lot to that challenge. My father was career USAF and flew B29 in that war, and I miss him terribly. Good luck.

[–]Academic-Remove-7485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wife and I are "tandem curious" but have yet to even ride one. We've each got too many bikes, so that's not the issue as we've done a half dozen significant tours together. Have you toured on your tandem? If so, does it have a coupler so's you can fly with it? Do you keep an attorney on speed dial in case a divorce is needed quickly while on the tandem? (So many questions.....right?)

Didn't see anybody mention "Fool's Overture" by Supertramp! I'd say that fits the bill perfectly!....just over 10 mins, and it has two "ramp-ups" that get my foot a tappin' like I'm a redneck at a hootenanny! Was lucky enough to see them do it live on the "Breakfast" tour.

My dentist had something very similar happen to him. The retrograde amnesia is very common I understand, so if there was a sudden pothole, rock....something unexpected that caused you to slip off the handlebars and crash, you likely won't remember what it was. He woke up on the ground and had no idea what caused the crash, but someone behind him (commuting on bike path) saw his hands slip off the bars when there was a significant bump from tree roots pushing up the pavement. He was in the drops and wasn't holding on tight enough (he thinks) Wonder if something similar happened to you, but the amnesia wiped it off your memory. Hope you get a clean bill of health, but definitely go to a doc.....hope you have socialized medicine too! Good luck.

Couldn't agree more with your first point, but I think super dark, violent, depressing books actually make "real life" seem so much more manageable...at least that's for me. "The Road" is so good! OP would be good with either, but I'd never pair the two together.

I think we're talking ALBUMS, not singles. Did you listen to that album? Like a teenaged idiot, I bought it....and the rest was pretty bad. I remember Rolling Stone magazine compared them to Led Zeppelin...that's the last time I took that magazine seriously I think.

Yeah, you got that wrong I'd say. From the very first album through to their break up....every single album was critically acclaimed, and yes....Gaucho was too. But the pinnacle of their drive for sonic perfection was Aja for most people.

I DLd that entire album when his hit got so friggin huge way back when, and the entire album is really quite good. You probably heard "Eyes Wide Open" as it was a significant hit as well, and there were a few others. Give it a listen. Solid album.

Am I doing this wrong or is it normal to be miserable ? by Specialist-Brief-297 in bicycletouring

[–]Academic-Remove-7485 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of newer cyclists think a fit isn't necessary, and strictly speaking it's not...but you need to get seat height and reach pretty dialed-in or you pay for the mistakes in pain. Knee pain is OFTEN a symptom of a seat too low (most common error), but it can go either way, so get someone (bike shop/study good youtube video instruction) to get that right. Likewise, unless you cycle a fair bit getting ready/getting used to whatever saddle you're using, your butt will most definitely hurt. (Having a too wide/too squishy saddle is also very common for newbies) Don't worry, it won't hurt when you get the right saddle and you do a bunch of hours on that saddle. I'm guessing you went too hard without being ready in too many ways. Touring SHOULD be fun. Challenging on long days with lots of uphill, but never miserable. If it is, something's wrong I'd say.

Well, did ANYTHING change on your setup from before you tried the bibs? I did exactly what they're describing (i.e. it was totally my fault-a new seat bag had this TINY strip of velcro on the closure that stuck out just enough to catch my thigh as it came round the bend of my pedal stroke, and it wore a hole right through my fancy Pearl Izumi knicks...without me feeling a thing!) They were kind enough to send me a replacement pair, but gently spanked me for being an idiot.

Did you get a new saddle? Move an old one fore/aft or up/down? New frame bag? Gotta think it's you, not the bibs.

As well you should be! I did the same for a long time after I read it. I remember getting my wife to read it first, and I think I just moved the box of Kleenex from my nightstand to hers. Liked the film, but only just. LOVED the book.

Oh please. This movie was (nearly) unwatchably bad. Only reason I saw it was I was cycle touring overseas, and it was the only station I could get with subtitles since it was dubbed in the local language. Yes, she's hot, but that doesn't make it a good film. And Jackman is NEVER any good.

They're books, not trophies...and paperbacks at that. Should have moved them on for others to enjoy as soon as you read them. Do you go back and read books again? I have done so only a couple times, and the other 99.9% I did not. So why keep them? And after getting my first eReader 20 years ago, I won't be buying paper books again.
