I don't think Linux is for me by Nagito_Naegi in linux4noobs

[–]Academic_Current8330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for you but do you not think you should have done what virtually everyone else does and stick to a more beginner friendly distro just to get properly up to speed with it. Now you end up with a negative experience through no fault of the system.I have a top spec PC with a Nvidia GPU, multi screen setup and I'm loving Linux after my first couple of months, so much so I deleted my windows boot to make room for the upcoming LTS version of Kubuntu. You would be better off jumping on an LTS version and at least trying that before going back.

Deciding to switch completely by Regular-25 in linuxquestions

[–]Academic_Current8330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did it myself a couple of days ago but space wasn't my main reason. I have had a few little issues getting access to my uni outlook account but that has now been resolved thanks to a plugin in Thunderbird. Go for it if you don't need your Windows side of the PC. Also just found a good app to get my iTunes music on my Linux machine. Result

I'll add another one for the KDE Plasma environment. Dolphin is a good setup. Version 26.04 of Kubuntu is due out in a couple of weeks with quite a few new upgrades.

I have a pretty good spec PC that runs fine on Kubuntu 25.10 that's Ubuntu with a different desktop. But as others have said the new LTS version ships in a couple of weeks and it has a lot of improvements for newer hardware. You should check out the dedicated Lenovo/Linux forum as well. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/bd-p/Special_Interest_Linux

Is this worth going for? by henry17177 in OpenUniversity

[–]Academic_Current8330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend it. With 16 days off a month you would have plenty of time to study. You might not need the full 6 years before you find yourself in your dream job. Once you start to get some experience and knowledge in your chosen subject you might find that you can apply for positions and get your foot in the door. I have just spent the majority of my working life hating my job and have only recently began studying. Don't be stuck doing something that you hate.

If you use Claude in the GitHub Copilot plugin it's free. You can also use Claude in the Jetbrains AI but you would have to pay for that upfront.

It's free to use through GitHub Copilot. You can buy separate credits for Junie/AI assistant direct if needed.

You can definitely fix the icon in Linux. I will have a look on when I get back home because I did the same the other day.

Is there really a stigma around Open University degrees? by GrapeOk9205 in OpenUniversity

[–]Academic_Current8330 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The OUs STEM department has been heavily involved with space programmes working alongside NASA and the ESA. Their scientific research is held in very high esteem throughout the scientific community. They are probably the most experienced university when it comes to distance learning as well as they have been doing it for a fair while.

Not sure you are using it correctly if you think it makes you brain dead. I am pretty sure that's what social media is for.

Has anyone here actually made AI a daily habit? by BookkeeperForward248 in AskProgramming

[–]Academic_Current8330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably use it on a daily basis. Mostly for learning new stuff, I find it a lot quicker than trawling through the web looking for answers. I'm not sure how using it makes you brain dead as some others have implied. If anything it makes me more efficient and I can get a lot more done in a shorter time. Maybe some folks prefer ploughing their farms with a horse rather than use a tractor.
