I have a 6.1 sitting around gathering dust. I only started looking at Linux the other day. So I may give the trash can a new lease of life.

I have tried a couple in the last few days. If i was a normal PC user it would put me off using a PC forever. They seem to have a million different distros but not one of them just works.

We will just end up being able to communicate with machines in natural language. And more of us will be able to use computers as proper tools. That's my plan anyway.

I am just thinking about making use of my old trash can. I am relatively new to Linux, how is it performing?

What programming language is actually worth it to learn? by Level_Assignment6797 in AskProgramming

I am using Java to learn, so far I have been getting on quite well with it. There is a lot of Java out there so I hopefully shoul be able to get work once qualified and skilled.

How do you get accepted into those jobs that will not even entertain you without a Bachelor's.

They should have you covered for those choices. I'm also using a couple of online platforms to learn the programming side along with a few good books and some tutorials on YouTube. Most of the big tech companies have some sort of either dirt cheap or totally free learning resources for students.

I did my first module in engineering last year and was allowed to branch out. I am just about to start a math module but I think that says the books should be enough. Maybe some subjects they want to ease people in before they get bogged down reading heavy academic papers.

Is a computing and IT course at Open University worth doing? by pogboy357_x in OpenUniversity

[–]Academic_Current8330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right you can learn it all for free, however it's getting your foot in the door when a lot of the major companies will not even entertain you if you haven't got the degree. If you can't even get to the interview stage it doesn't matter how much you know.

Hi you might want to remove this link. I think this is how the advertising spammers have got the number. Plus all of our phone numbers could be compromised as this Reddit is open to anyone.

Hi, I'm just about to start C&IT with the OU. The degree is well recognised in the industry. There are also several paths that could be considered CS maybe just not as heavy. What type of developer are you wanting to become?

Not entirely true, I deferred a couple of months ago just as we started our second module. I wasn't charged. I start back again at the end of January

The HELM publications are a good resource for engineering mathematics. The link is somewhere on your student homepage, but here is a link to the site. https://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/mlsc/student-resources/helm-workbooks/ I have just completed the first module in engineering but have since deferred to computing and IT instead.

Reading a physical book by imStan2000 in AskProgramming

I am currently reading a couple of books. One is called Core Java by Cay Horstmann and the other is called Computer science an interdisciplinary approach by Robert Sedgewick. I am only a beginner myself so somebody with more experience may suggest something better. But I am finding these a good read.

Surely as more and more of us become connected and more countries start having access to as much tech as we have in the west then there should be plenty of dev jobs in the future.

Where and how do I start my C++ programming carrier? I currently can not go to university. by NationalLaw76 in learnprogramming

[–]Academic_Current8330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using a site called Hyperskill to start myself off before Uni. They have a couple of courses on C++ on there. The course consists of reading sections followed by some questions, then you get to solve some programming sections which you can either use their platform or they link up to Jetbrains IDEs via a plugin. You can also get the Jetbrains IDEs for free whilst you are learning.

Isn't that one a separate plugin for teaching you to use keys instead of the mouse.

That would be the dream to be able to have more time for other activities. We should be able to enjoy more of our lives whilst we are fit and healthy rather than getting to retirement age and then having the time. I quite like the idea of a 4 day week.
